NEW YORK, June 2ti.-The bull contln
sont In stocks failed to realize their ex
pectations today, though the changes at
the cloie show net gains for the majority
of stocks. Final prices, however, were con
siderable beHw the best and the tone of
tho market during the latter part of tho I
day was decidedly unsettled and soottv, In
spite of tho sustaining Inlluoncc of notable ,
strength In some stocks. The opening rlo
was In sympathy with Iondon and was at-
trlhuted to the effect of the news from '
CMna or the relief of Tien Tsln. Later
advlcc showed that the periodical settle
ment In I-ondnn had disclosed an unex
pectedly laro bear account In Americans
and tho London buying wn the covering of
short contrt'ts. It was especially effect
ive In some of the southern railroad stocks.
The. New York market, however, showed It
self Indifferent to the progress of ovontH
In China, as It has consistently done
throughout, and tho opening advance waa
largely lost.
Tho first rally In the market followed the
sharp break In the wheat market and was
morft notlceablo In the southwestern grang
ers, especially Burlington and Atchlnn
preferred. Crop news continued bad from
tho spring wheat region, but tho specu
lators who have boon buying wheat arc evi
dently Impressed with tho willingness of
mo farmers to tnuo tnc price offered, and

three cars past having ben pasbed. Good

The present drouth will mean the Iocs of
millions of dollars to tho dairy and butter
indiibtry of Mlnnefoln," said Commissioner
J. M. Bowler of the state dairy and focd do
partmcnt this morning.
"Tho butter output of the state has fallen
off 25 per cent In Uv labt month because of
the scarcity of hay, gra3 and fodder due to
the drouth."
Deputy Commissioner B. D. Whlto of th
department trcturVied today from a trip
through tho slate and reported n very dis
couraging outlook for tho butter nnd dairy
men unless they got rain, so that fodder
corn to carry their slock inrough the winter
can be raised.
Minnesota annually produces more than
$10,000,000 worth of butter and Mr. Whlto
says there will be a decrease of fully f.O per
cent this year.
He ayB that a number of tho farmers
have nlready begun reducing herds by soil
ing and many are cutting grass and feeding
it to their stock.
Encouraging reports have been receivel
from the counties in tho extreme southern
part of tho state, where a fair amount of
rain has fallen.
