Xcit WrfL .SIhmts n ( ImiiKe In llir Slock Markets, NEW YOHK. May 2S.-The opening of a new week showed no material chance In speculative conditions nnd the stock mnr kcta of New York, London, Paris and Berlin continued dull nnd neglected. In New York nnother brokerage linn nn nounccd Its suspension, the failure being announced, as wns that of Price, Mo Cormlck & Co., on the cotton and stock exchances, almost simultaneously. Tlio closing out of tho firm's contract on tho Stock exchange resulted In transactions In about 10,00" nhares. That prices wero Inclined to advance under the Intlucme of the settlement wns sufllclcntly explained by the fact that the buying of stocks for tho tlrtn outnumbered the selling fully three to one. That Is to say, the house was largely short of the market. The failure Is attributed to cotton speculation, ns the recent movement of stocks has been In favor of outstanding contracts of the II. m. Last week's rumors of tlnnnclal tl 1 111 cultfes, which spccltied this house, brought tho pressure to bear upon It and pre cipitated the assignment. The fact that the same kind of rumors are circulated regarding some other houses Is a factor In keeping Wall street sentiment unsettled. The only notable movements during tho day wero the advances In Sugar, supposed to be 011 bear covering, nnd In Hurllngtoii, on n resumption of buying of the same character as that which lias given the stock Its recent strength. These advances prompted some sharp rallies nt other points In the market and sonic of the earlier losses were recovered. Thn market was semi-stagnant at times and the closing was dull und Irregular. Loudon sold small amounts of stock, al though that market as n whole showed strength on the advance of the British Into the Transvaal. It Is worth remember ing that the speculative world has baed its largest hopes regarding the end of the Transvaal wnr on the effect to be pro duced In tho money market by the re sumption of the gold supply from the South Afrlcnn mines, but at the present time there is a reflux of cash Into tho reserves of all the great banks of the world and Increasing dllllculty is being experienced In finding profitable employ ment for Idle capital. This Is entirely without effect In arousing any speculative demand for securities, owing to tho fact that the release of money Is due to 11 decline In trade. Dullness today was ac centuated by the fact that the week will be Interrupted by a holiday In Now York and by the year's great racing event In London. Sterling exchange was weak to day. The bond market wns very dull nnd showed weakness In sympnthv with stocks Total sales, par value. $1,160,000. United States bonds were unchanged In bid quo tations, The commerclnl Advertiser's Ixmdon flnarrcinl cablegram snys: The markets here were stagnant today and business was hardly tested. The markets were generally dull enrly on continued tlatness In Austral ians. They ruled lower on the rumor that the cnvalry hnd reached Johannesburg, this causing consldernble buying of Africans. Tlntos dinned to 50-V the lowest for a lomr t'me Americans were unchanged nnd fca tureless. The banK got 24,On) gold from Australia.
