Advices from Washington are to the effect
that Congressman McPherson will nt onco re
sign on the adjournment of congress unit as
sume- the duties of the federal Judgeship. The ,
understanding, however. Id that no special
election to till the vacancy will be held and
that his succet-mir will be elected at the gen
eral electlin In November. Whoever may
be elected to succeed Congressman McPher-
son in the national house of representatives 1
will secure what Is generally termed a snap
He will draw several months' back pay when
he reaches Washington. The new member
will not be sworn In until the tlrst Monday
In December, and his term will close on
March I next. Consequently ho will have,
only thrco months of actual service In tho '
present congress, but he will draw about '
eight months' pay, amounting to a total of I
about f3..')33, which may be regarded as fair'
compensation for three months' of active I
statesmanship with nothing to do hut vote
on appropriation bills. This, It Is raid. Is nn
established rule of congress. This plum will
undoubtedly fall to Judge Smith of this city,
.is he will be nominated for both tho unex
pired term of Congressman McPherson and
the regular term of two years, commencing
next March.
Advices from Washington are also to tho
effect that Congressman McPherson has not

800 Invitations were Issued and It Is esti
mated that ai least .100 attended. The hall
was transformed, with the aid of cut flow
ers, ferns and palms into a perfect bower,
whllo the protty faces and dresses of th
young girls added a charm to the gay and

Statu High School Athletic association held
yesterday nt tho Cnlon Driving park. Hoi
litis, n member of tho winning team, enp
tured tho Individual championship with
three firsts. Tho trick, while rather heavy af
ter the recent rains, was In better condition
than had been expected, but despite this
drawback, some good time wns made and
several of the records made last year nt
Marengo wore beaten. The attendance was
above the average on such occasions In this
city, both grandstands hi lug well filled,
while a number of carriages dotted tho
cottiso along tho rails. In tho morning tho
weather looked a trllle threatening, but by
the afternoon the clouds had rolled away
