With the number of cattle received In the two days so lnrge and with Chicago re porting a weak market this morning. It was to be expected that buyers at this point would ask for some concession. True to expectations, they sta'tcd out bidding prices that were generally a little lower. Sellers, however, hold on nnd the euro market was very slow. Buyers evidently wanted the cattle and a little later In the morning the market gradually took on more llfo nnd became quite nctlve, so that the most of the cattle changed hands In a short time after the trading was onco under way. The market closed nctlve nnd steady with yesterday. Considering the receipts nnd nil other circumstances tho cattle mnrket this week has been In very good shape. Cows and heifers were In good demand, though buyers started out bidding lower. in some cases probably they bought cnttle lower but the mnrket closed up active and steady on nil desirable kinds at least. Thero was one bunch of heifers In tho yurds good enough to bring $4. SO. Thin stockers seemed to oe In good dc mund nnd prlcos are ns high ns any time. Warmed-up cattle also sell pretty well to the feeders nnd prices hnve not shown much chnnge this week. The verv good prices at which stock heifers have been selling has brought In cattle of that kind from every direction, and the result Is that they are selling: a little lower. Still the demand ivas good, nnd though the receipts ivere liberal they were none too large and the trade after a little ll-ened up nnd was quite nctlve nt prices that were about steady with the. best time yesterday, or 5c higher than yesterday's close The bogs sold largely at $5,101(5.121,4, with a sprink ling of the better loads nt ?5,15fiS.17'.j. and a $3.22'a top. An early clearance was effected, everything being; sold and weighed up lontr before midday. From the table of nveragc prices above It will be noted that the hogs today sold only 10c lower than tho close of last week and a strong 5c lower than on Wednesday of last week. The situation as regards the hoc market nt this point l rnther peculiar. There are five big packers here and some of them nt least are bullish In their views regarding the future of tho market, so that they are large buyers, While some of the packers are bearish there Is such n nood demand for meat products that they have to have the bogs regardless of the price, and the result Is that the demand l very strong. Packers hnve been trying right nlong to hear the market down, and hold It down, but nt the same time thev want the hogs. The result Is that for some time this has been the high market 011 the river, nnd almost up to Chicago on some days. Yesterday the Inrgest drove of hogs hought on the Kansas City market oust 9e less than the cheapest drove bought on this market. As nn exnmple of the wny hogs are selling nt the two markets If might be added that yesterday half of the hogs sold nt Kansns City under $5.05, nnd that the big bulk of all the hogs sold at $5.00f(5.05. On the other hnnd the big bulk of all the hogs sold at South Omaha yes terday was at $5.10i5.12'V Kansas City's top yesterday was $5.15, and South Omaha'!) $5.25. In other words .the South Omaha market was 10c higher than Kan sas city. Representative sales: No. Av, 8h, Pr. .., II so ,.. 5 00 ... 5 09 1120 S M No, Av. Sh. Ilellcs nf Civil War Converted Into Ntnlup of "Our l.nily of I'enee," The romantic htstory of the two hujo cannon that ornament the campus of St. Mary's academy, Notre Dame, Ind., Is to have a now chapter added. The ponderous and rusty old guns that hive long slnco served their usefulness as engines of death are to he melted and east Into a colossal statue of Our Lady of Peace. They have been resting on grassy mounds In front of the main building of the academy since they were presented to the Sisters of the Holy Cross In 1S62. At the outbreak of tho civil war the can non were among the artillery and ether armament that fell Into the hand, of tbo confederates, These two guns, which are of the Tarrot type of ten-Inch caliber, were placed In the defense of Fort Charles. They were two of tho heaviest pieces of confed erate ordnance and they were christened with some ceremony In honor of Mrs, Jeffer son Pavls and Mrs. James K. Polk. One wns called "Lady Polk". and the other Lidy Davis." In the summer of 1R62 Fort Chnrlcs was attacked In force. Colonel Fitch of Indiana leading the land forces nnd Commodore Davis tho gunboat flotilla that ascended the Whlto river under tho noses of "Lady Davis" and "Lady Polk." Tho commandant of Fort Charles was Colonel Fry, who, with General W. A. C. Ryan, was executed by tho Spaniards In Santiago de Cuba at the end of the disastrous Vlrglnlus filibustering expedition In 1873. When the fort was dismantled the turret guns, which Colonel Fry had aplked before surrendering, were given to Mother Mary Angela for the campus at St. .Mary's acad emy. Mother Mary Angela was superioress of the Order of the Holy Crres. She was a first counln of James O. Blaine and was born In the same house. Her other near relative were the Shermans and Ewingi of Ohio. Her family name was Oillcspie. The exact proportions of the statue will not be ascertained until tho guns have been measured for their cubical contents of metal. Tho statue will bo placed on a mound commanding a view of the campus and on the bluffs overlooking tho St. Jo seph river, which winds along the academy grounds. AX ANOIISVr SLOT MACHI.F.. We hnve been caught by the slot machine disease during tho last few years to so great an extent that most persons tninK tnree devices am onlv of tho most modern in vention. Such, however. Is not the case, de clares the Washington Pout, for twenty-two centurlen ago the great mathematician and mechanician of Greece, Hero, had perfectel lot mnch no very much like those ot our day which sprinkle cologne on your hand kerchief nfter a penny has been put Into the slot. Did iho inventor of the modern nennv-ln-the- plot machine know of Hero's fountain, or did he really redlhcover the device for himseit? Pehaps he will never tell. JAMES E BOYD & CO., Telephone 103D.
