NEW YORK, May S -The prolonged list
lessness of the Stock exchange gave way to
an outburst of nctUo liquidation today and
prices suffered severely as a result. In the
railroad lines between 1 and 2 points arc
the rulo and In many active stocks they cx- !
ceed that. Stocks In which hull manlpula- j
tlon wns persisted In 111 the face of gather-
Ing cvldenco of depression naturally suf
fered the most. Baltimore & Ohio stocks
were foremost lu thnt clas.. the common ,
losing over 6 points and closing nt tho ,
lowest, while the preferred Is .14 lower than ;
yesterday's close. Missouri Pacific was an
other example In the sume class and de
clined 2 on Verv henvv ilrlllltiirs In nlte of .
iot buying on 11 down scale. I
1 no snarp break in prices came generally 1
ns a surprise and the room traders, con
trasting tho wide movement of prl es with
tho small effect produced by their best ef- I
forts for a week past were Inclined to look
for an explanation to te arrival within
reach of telegraph facilities of tho most ,
successful benr lender of the last year, who
landed In Entrlnml nflcr n week nt Men. Hut
thero was notlilng that would make a bear
raid sufficiently accouai tor the action of
tho mnrket. Liquidation was clearly In
evidence. The large offerings In one or two
of the railroad lists were a feature.
The weekly statistics of railroad trnfllc
made up nt Chicago nnd possibly held ntter
yesterday's mnrket was closed were suill
clent explanation for the selling. They
demonstrate conclusively Hint the reac
tionary tendency of business bns mid a
marked effect on rallir.ad tratlli . as It has
been feared It would. It Is apparent that
man;- offers of railroad stocks have been
holding In the hope that tho volume nt
railroad trafflr would not hi' materially af
fected. But with Jnrge declines both In the
receipts and shipment lu Chicago nnd with
freight officials of eastern Hues complain
ing about the light traflie. large holders or
stocks thi patched the market today nnd
found few bidders to take them. The bear
traders, when they saw how things wero
going. Joined In the selling and their buying
nt decline.-! to cover their short contracts
gave, tho only occasional checks to the
downward course of prices,
The necessity which Is now clear of a re
duction of prices throughout the business
world In order to Induce sufficient con
sumptive demand to absorb the largely in
creasing production gave occasion for re
pressing opinions of the outlook. l''enr are
felt thai a readjustment of wages and a
couroe of labor troubles may be the remit.
Not much attention was paid to the ques
tion of further gold exports, a? the money
market shows no effect of apprehension on
thnt score, nor on the outgo to the sub
treasury. The continuing ease 01 money
In tho face of these factors is regarded as
corroborating tho fears of business reac
tion. Tho comprehensive outlays for Improve
ments by some of the railroad companies
and for extension of control are also be
ginning to be looked upon with apprehen
sion nnd iii affect unfavorably stocks.
Cleveland Wire and l'edernl Steel were ;
rather notable exceptions to tho general
weakness on account of the extensive liqui
dation in them.
Bonds were weak and in sympathy with
stocks. Total rales, par value, $2,150,000.
United States new 4a declined d and 3s,

Tho Commercial Advertiser's 1indon
financial cablegram says: There wns uni
versal weakness on the markets today on
enforced liquidation, chiefly In West Aus
tralians. Trouble was reported in inc i.ias-
row market and funds were weak on tho
expectation of nil early loan by the Iindon
eniintv council on favorable terms. Amer
icana were a bid feature throughout. They
opened nervous under parity and New ork
prices dropped In the afternoon until
tliev becamo very soft here on New York
offers. The fall wus accelerated In the
street. Talk of American gold sllpments
to begin this week was persistent Tlntos
and Anacondas were lint, fearing that
metal troubles In Americn will spread to
copper. Money was In moderate demand.
Bills were stendy. The bank did a trifling
business In discounts and the market In
debtedness has not been completely repaid.

CATTLE Taking Into consideration the
large receipts of cattle the general market
today was lu pretty good shape, although
values were only steady to a little easier.
The trade was fairly active and the pens
practically cleared lu reasonably good sea
son. Packers seemed to want the fat cattle,
though they started out bidding prices that
were generally n little lower. The market
was rather slow at the opening, but the
trade soon livened up and buyers took the
cattle nt prices that ranged from steady to
Just a little lower In spots. Handy light
cattle of good quality were In the best de
mand and such cattle generally sold steady.
On the other hand holders of heavy cattle
reported the market ns 11 little lower thnn
yesterday. Among tho offerings today were
some cattle good enough to bring $5.00 and
better.
Cows and liclfcrs. if of good qualify, were
lu active demand and thp market on such
was generally steady. Other kinds were in
spots lower and the close was weak and
easier. The change In the general market,
however, was not of very much Importance
and the prices paid for that kind of stock
were generally very satisfactory. The bull
market, did not show much change.
Feeder buyers evidently aimed to buy
their wnrmed-up cattle a little loner this
morning, but the- market on light and thin
entitle wns not much, If any, changed.

HOGS The hog market at this point yes
terday was way out of line as compared
with other markets, close to UV higher than
Kansas City nnd almost as high as Chicago.
When packers came to realize this morning
that they were pa) lug too mm h for their
hogs hero ns compared with the wa the
hogs are selling In other markets they
started out to even up things by forcing
prices down here. The market accordingly
opened 7V410c lower than yesterday, mostly
10c lower than yesterday's general market.
Some of the better hogs sold on that basis
that Is, at $5.10fi5.l2't for good mixed loads
and as high as $3.25 for the best heavy. The
market was slow nt the decline and before
very much was done reports arrived from
nt'her market points Indicating a still fur
ther decline in prices, so Hint the market
here eased eff again and closed 15c lowct.
In the language of the yards, tho late mar
ket was rotten, Late sales weie largely at
$5.0MG.10. Although the market was a drag
from start to finish, sellers could do notli
lng but take the prices and they were
finally forced to cut loose and sell, so that
tho hulk of the hogs changed hands In rea
sonably good season after nil.
It will bo noted from the table of average
prices above that the market has been
steadily following tho downward course
slnco last Friday, when the average price
paid for nil the. hogs here was $5.26. Rep
