Ilrenk In Steel fSrnnp tnnsed li Ilrslunntlon of Director. NEW YORK, May 7-Therc were sev eral point of weakness In the stock market tndal' nnd fh tvr.ro umr.1mt to turn thn room traders to the bear side of the market. The operations of this professional element wero the only ones apparent outside of n few stocks and they reflected no conditions of even well established opinions regarding the general outlook. The demand for stocks continued quite Insignificant, so that tho moderate offerings, In Inrge part, for the short account of room traders, made an Im pression easily upon prices, hut the decline failed to Induce any liquidation nnd prices readily rallied when the bears came to cover. Tho steel shares were the- most con spicuous In the trading and were weak from tho opening. The reporte-cl closing of a mill of the Federal Steel company Induced the early decline, which was languid and sluggish. The announcement of the resignation from the board of directors of the American Steel nnd Wire company of tho Sellgmans' repre sentatives and their statement of Irrecon cilable objections to Chairman Gates and his policy caused n sharp further break In tho steel group. In which the; Federal Steel was rather more affected than Steel nnd Wire, Pressed Steel Cur nnd American Smelting were exceptions In the group, the former rising over a point. Long Islnnd broke sharply after Its recent notable ad vance on the absorption by Pennsylvania and closed 9'4 Points lower The bonds of the company were also heavy. The renctlon was attribute! to speculative profit taking nnd occurred on comparatively small deal ings. In the railroad list St. Paul, Pennsylvania, Union Pacific and Baltimore & Ohio had rather a wide fall on what looked like let ting go of a speculative account. There wero henvy blocks offered of all these. There was n slight show of strength In spots at the opening In response to linden's encouragement over South African news, but the rise was but momentary. The rallv after the break in tne steel stocks was not well held. General Electric advanced nearly 3 points In the morning, but saved only 1 point on the day. The money market continued very easy and further gold exports to Paris arc ex Teeted. it Is not believed that nny gold will go to 1ondon In the present condition nnd at the present level of exchange, which declined today both for sterling nnd for Paris cheques, Estimates of the amount to go on Thursday to Paris run to $5,ooo,000. but no announcements were made todnv of en gagements. The bear traders during the day professed uneasiness over tho gold movement as well as over labor dllllcultles at various points, tho pendency of the presi dential campaign nnd the reactionary course of business, which they nrguo must have Its effect on railroad earnings. Railroad bonds showed a yielding ten dency in sympathy with stocks. Totalsaies. par value, $I,7M,000. ' United States now 4s advanced and tho refunding 2s, when Issued, 3s and old 4s declined lie In the bid price. The Commercial Advertiser's London financial cablegram says: There was a rather quiet feeling In the markets here toda, mainly in Africans. The mnrkets opened better on Lord Roberts' victories, but closed irregular, funds declining for fear of dear money, It was raid, but prob ably in connection with forced liquidation. The war loan was quoted nt 15-16 premium, closing at 11-16. Americans wero neglected h,ut,rm .ver P"lty until New York sold slightly, Iondon sold tintos, but Paris cheerfully supported them and they closed 7 up at M'S, Anncondns were steady. Tho bank bought 17.000 In German coin. Loans were In less demand and bids were scarce. Tho bank did no business In discounts and was repaid moderately. The Board of Trade returns show up 16.3 and Imports increased 5.2. although there was considerable less of American wheat. Pack ers here seem to have a very good demnnd for ment products nnd they evidently want the cattle and a good many of them. Every thing In the yards today was sold and welched up early In the morning. Cows nnd heifers were In very light supply and the mnrket strong. They could hnrdly be called higher, as they were very high last week ns compared with steers, but It Is safe to call the market stronger. The. fact Is the cow market has been gradually firming up under the Influence of the very good demand and the moderate supply. Bulls sold quite well today, there being a fair demnnd nnd prices steady, Stockers nnd feeders were In active de mand nnd anything In the way of desirable thin cattle wn snnnoed un In verv short order. The prices paid were even stronger than last week. The market on stock cattle hns been gradually firming up, owing to the ract mat tno supply is very light In the face of a pretty good demand. Receipts here were moderate nnd the demand good, so that local conditions were nil right, but Chlcngo proved a dis turbing element, ns reports' from there were verv unfavorable. Tho market here opened 2',jr lower nn the general run of gooil hogs, which sold at Jl.20fiG.22Vi. as ngnlnst J5.22'45.25 on Saturday, best time Some right good heavy hogs sold at J5.3Ut( 5.35. The reports from Chicago, however, wero such that the market weakened nl most Immediately and became 5e lower than Saturday. Packers began talking J5.15 for tho gooil mixed loads, and still lower prices for those that wero not good, Tho result was that the market became very dull anil the trade was prolonged through nil the forenoon. Some of the hlg packers seemed to be on the bear side from the very start, and they never did bid prices that were any better than 5c lower than Saturday's close. The market did not get my better, but flattened out completely at tho close with no one trying to buy. Representative sales: No. Av. Ph Pr. No. Av. 6h Pr 27 2'0 80 S 10 l 291 ...
