CATTLE The receipts today footed up
rot far from 200 cars, which was a bin run
efor this market and the largest In two
weeks. The most of tho cattle hero were
cornfed steers with the average quality
not so Rood as of late, Light and mcdlum
wclght steers seemed to predominate, with
good, heavy cattlo scarce. The market as
n. wholo was slow and It was late before
a clearance was effected.
With such large receipts of fat cattle,
buyers were able to tako tho bear side and
tho market was had from start to finish,
lewel from a seller's standpoint. As n
reneral thlnr It would be safe to quote the
market as 10c lower, though perhaps In
some cases SJ10c lower would bo enough
to call It. Sellers were naturally slow about
taking off that much and tho result wns a
very slow and dragging market, po that it
took tho whole forenoon to effect anything
llko a clearance of tlui pens,
Somo cholco fat heifers sold early at
prices that did not look any lower, ns high
ns 11,60 being paid for some, but the gen
eral market on cows was slow and a little
lower in sympathy with the decline on fat
rattle. As compared with thn way steers
are selling the market on cows unci heifers
Is high,
Not many Blockers and feeders were on
nale today, while there was some little de
mand. Thin cattle sold Just as high as
over In plto of the decline on fat cattle,
tout as a matter of course wanneil-un or
half-fat cattle were a little lower. Rep
resentative sales:

HOGS-As expected there was a good run
of hogs today, the receipts numbering 127
cars. Eastern markets were reported ns
lower nnd there was a general decline all
along tho line, so that tho situation was
entirely against the sellers. The market
opened nt this iiolnt with one buyer pay In K
lo.25flG.27'4 for good mixed loads anil as high
as J5.avfir.35 Tor the best heavy. Other
buyers held back nnd almost Immediately
the market weakened and buyers began
talking $5.31 for the best hogs nnd $5,201?
B.22V4 for mixed loads. In fact, some of the
heaviest packers were talking about want
ing droves to cost $5.25 nnd under. Sellers
wero willing to take off, In view of the con
dition of other markets, but they wero not
wilting to tnko off as much as buyers
wanted. Tho result whs that after tho early
sales of forty to fifty loads the trade came
to a standstill nnd for somo time thoro was
practically nothing doing. Uiter on the
hogs sold so that the hulk was disposed of
some little time beforo midday. The mar
ket wound up bad and fully 10c lower than
yesterday.
It will b" notM from the table of nver
age prices that the hogs today sold at the
lowest point touched by the market since
the first week In the month. Representative

len Our,
NEW YORK, Mny l.-Rinlness wns so
apathetic nnd so narrow today In the stock
mnrket that little can be deduced to throw
llsht on the business or financial sltuntlon.
Prices nre ns n rule slightly higher, but
nboul the only explanation to bo offered Is
thnt room traders In stocks proved unable
to get them down, In spite of one or two
Incidents rather unfavorable to values, nnd
turned perforce to thn long side In order
to get tho requisite movement In prices to
offer nny Held for trading nt nil. Even
Sngnr, nlthough still nbsorblng n large pro.
portion of attention, became comparatively
quiescent and limited its range to a little
over 3 points. The stock moved both nbovo
nnd below Inst night. The failure of the
Pennsylvania directors to ndvnnce thn
seml-nnnuol dividend rate proved ineffect
ive to uwnkeu the market from Its npnthy,
The most positive nsscrtlims hnve been
mnde in the board room for ninny dnys
that Pennsylvania's dividend rnto wns to
bo advanced nnd there have been heavy
operations on the bull side based on these
nssertlnns.
The slight weakness manifested by the
stock on the announcement of the regular
dividend would be culled fortitude in the
market were it not so unmlstnknbly Indif
ferent. The presumnble disappointment
over tho Pennsylvania dividend following
tho fnlluro of yesterdny's tumors; regarding
the Missouri Pnclllo dividend to be realize,!
hnd only the slightest effect on those
stocks. When the smnll benrs had rather
timidly offered down Pennsylvania to a
fraction below Inst night, without bringing
nul nny appreciable pales the whole market
took on n llrmer tone, Missouri Pnclllo
rose nearly 2 points. Rut whether the mnr
ket moved up or down the small profes
sional traders failed equally to nttrnct nny
following. The closing wns dull nnd heavy,
nnd net changes were mixed. The local
traction stocks, led by Metropolitan,
showed rather acute depression on nccount
of thu judicial contlrmntton of the consti
tutionality of tho franchise tnx law The
Republic Iron nnd Stool stocks wero forced
down sharply on talk of a rupture of re
lations with other combinations In tho steel
trade. New York Air Binko dropped I,"
points nt tho opening, but Inter rallied 12.
Long Island ndvnnced to 77',, compared
with 67 on Snturdny, on the strength of
pending leglslntlon to nuthorlzo nn East
river connection between Its system nnd
the outside railroad world. New York
Central rallied from yesterday's depression
on hopes of a settlement of the threatened
labor troubles,
A small shipment of gold wns nnnounced
lo go by Thursday's French steamer. Thn
sterling exchnngo market was heavy nnd
reacted a fraction, but It Is generally ex
pected that large shipments of gold will bo
made by next Saturday's steamer. The
money market continues to work ensler
nnd tho foreign banking houses nre In tho
mnrket seeking largo loans on foreign ex
change collntcrnl nnd offering 2U and 3 per
cent for sixty dnys.
Tho bond mnrket was dull nnd the gen
ernl tendency wns renctlonnl. Totnl sales,
