CHICAGO, April 21,-Thc grain nnd pro
vision mnrkcta were quiet liut llrm today,
wheat closing tfic higher, corn ic to
MMo Improved and oats "sIHic better.
Cables wero a strengthening factor. Pro
visions closed at from Vkc to 1012',4c over
yesterday.
It was a placid, uneventful mlddlo-of-thc-road
sort of a market In wheat, not seek
ing to tako spoils from anybody, but rather
seeking to persuade the mighty bulls and
the growling bears to Ho down together and
bo Rood. The business of tho day was In
swapping May for July, considerable of
which trading was done at a difference of
lc, The cash business was not larRe. An
Incident of tho day was the heavy ship
ments 487,000 bushels, making tho ship
ment) from Chicago for two days fiNj.OMO
bushels, Tho sustaining Influences of tho
market wero the steadiness of Liverpool In
thn faro of tho decline here, the corn
strength and a lack of new bearish news.
The weather was all that could bo desired
by tho farmers, mild temperatures over tho
LTowIni belt and whowcrs where needed.
New York reported twenty-six bads taken
for export. Atlantic pott clearances In
wheat and Hour wero equal to 171.CKX) bush
els. I'rlrnary receipts were 292,r1() bushels,
romnnred with 3'0,000 bushels last year.
Minneapolis and Duluth reported 361 cars,
against 271 last week and IDS a year aRo.
Jxicnl receipts wero sixty-flvo cars, none of
contract grade. May sold at from 6 1, ft
GITic early to KMc and closed WiCKc over
yesterday nt f','c; July at from eHc to
bCUfiftiftic nnd closed o up nt ntPJc.
Corn was quiet and strong, the most Im
portant market on tho Moor today- Cables
were stronR and more rains caused appre
hension of delay In plantlnR. The best Item
of the day was the renewed export busi
ness, which developed probably as a result
of thn recent decline. Considerable May
was liquidated, but not on a sutllrlent scale
to depress tho market. Tho cash business
was about 200,000 bushels, of which nine
loads wero sold for direct export. Receipts
wero 279 curs: May ranged at from 3Se to
aS'iWKo nnd closed 'Sic up nt 3Sic; July
nt from KHfce to 30',4T30c, closing -HU'.ic
Improved at 2914c.
Tho oats market was llrm, helped by tho
corn Htrongth. a better demand for futures
and an Improved demand for the cash
article. Trado wna rather dull. Receipts
hero were 173 cars. May ranged nt from
22140 to 22Tic and closed W:,u up at 22tr;
July at from 22!4c to 2:!,j,ft23Uc, closing Uff
Uo up at 23j,23'.ic.
Tho provision market was quiet and
rather Irregular; tho opcnlnR was nt prices
over yesterday's closing llgurcs, but a
small decline followed becauso hogs were
easy at tho yards. The decline met' cood
buying and tho market reacted, closing
firm. May pork opened at from JI2.KV to
t12.R7'.i nnd closed 7'c Improved nt $12.70;
May lard sold at from $6.S7',j to $7.02 nnd

MOVIJ.MKXTS OF STOCKS AMI BONDS.
Inillcntlnnn of Some l.nrite Operation
in Hie llxclinimc,
NEW YORK. April 2I.-There were Indi
cations of some large operations on the
Stock exchange today and tho market
seemed to be under manipulation for tho
purpose of facilitating them. Yesterday's
lato show of strength found a response In
tho London market this morning nnd prices
of Americans wero well advanced before
tho opening here. I,omlon bought quite
freely In this mnrket after trading com
menced. But It quickly became manifest
that yesterday's rally In prices had been
larRcly duo to the demand from tho short
Interest. After tho opening spurt buying
quickly fell off nnd prices fell back, while
tho market became very dull. The pool
operations In Missouri Pncltlc, which uerc
a prominent factor in yesterday's rally,
camo to a stop again and that stock fell
back. The room traders turned to the bear
sldo nnd worked for a reaction. - vigor
ous attack on Baltimore .t Ohl Read
ing first preferred caused dei .i of 3Vi
and 314, respectively, nnd broke the wholo
list quite sliarply. But after the decline
larRo buying developed ngaln for both ac
counts, nil offerings being freely absorbed,
apparently with no desire to advance prices,
A very characteristic movement In Sugar
Indicated the periodical punishment to tho
shorts In tho stock. After a preliminary
drive, which carried the prlco to 101, the
stock suddenly shot up In the last hour to
11014. Tho scramble of tho shorts to cover
helped on the rlso nnd enormous blocks
changed hnnds.
Peoplo's Gas at tho same time rallied 2
points and tho whole list was more or less
affected. Fcvcrlshness in Sugar nnd one or
two relapses elsewhere gave n slightly Ir
regular tone, but the closing was generally
llrm and nt small net changes In the ma
jority of stocks. Dealings In tho steel In
dustrials continued lnrge, but the prlco
movements wero unsensntlonul and ' tho
changes small. The short Interest contin
ued to cover in tho group on a largo scale.
Tho bears made much of the prospects of
gold exports, nlthough the sterling ex
chnngo rate, after n early advance, be
came somewhat unsteady.
Some of tho recent demands for exchange
Is reported to have been 'bought for this
account would come on the market nt or
near tho gold export account. But the rcii
cral opinion Is that Rold will shortly go
out, as discount rates continue to harden In
London and money rates to decline in New
York, Already the money rnteo nre lower
hero and hlRher in London than In Juno
Inst, when $20,000,000 In gold went out In
payment of tho Simnlsh war claim. De
mand sterling nt thnt time did not rlso
nbovo $I.8S1i, compnied with $I.8S14 this
morning. The Bnnk of England was then
bidding U4c higher for American eagles and
was allowing Interest on gold In transit,
which It seems not disposed to do now.
Notwithstanding the prevailing case of
money rntes hero tho surplus reserves of
New York banks are lower than usual at
this period of the year nnd the use of
money continues active In the Interior. The
present supply to tho market from the sub
treasury on account of payments of bond
premiums cannot continue Indefinitely.
Should It bo Interrupted while gold exports
are making Inroads upon tho surplus of
tho banks tho effect on money rntes would
necessarily bo promptly shown.
Western New York nnd Pennsylvania
general 3s and 4s rose 4 nnd then re
acted 2. Tho bond market generally was
rather weak. Total sales, par value, $2.3.'.i.
OoO. United Stntes refunding 2s, when Is
sued, tho 3s and the 4s declined V in the
bid price.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says: The markets
wero Hss gloomy but still Irregular and dull.
Tho war news was regarded ns more favor
able, but tho monetary outlook Is disliked.
Consols wero down 5-16 and tho war loans
premium down U to 1 per cent. The mar
ket Is still talking of a new Issue ns In
evitable, but obviously tho market would
have to bo worked up first. Americans we'e
quite, cheerful. They opened half a point
nbovo parity and wero Idlo till tho nfter
noon, nlthough Berlin bought a few shares.
New York purchased only slightly and
finally prices ensed. Copper spurted In
sympathy with Americans and the rise of
10s in the price of metal. Paris bought tln
tos steadily, making them rise 1 point. An
acondas wero bought here, causing an ad
vance of 6-16. No gold was received or
lost. Call monev nml .hills vro m..,i,. .i
I a brisker business with them done. Loans
I duo tho bank were renewed and a largo
business In discounts was done. The nros-
I PeCtUS Of a cement ninnilfiietnr,.a'

Ital Is 8,0fO.fi00 and over thirty businesses
nre consolidated giving a practical

CATTLE Thero was a very fair run of
eattlo In tho yards today, something like
ninety londu of corn-fed steers being re
ported on sale. The general market was
without much change In any direction, but
was sufllclently active to effect an early
clearance.
Tho market on fat eattlo was a little
Plow to open, still buyers were out In
pretty good season. They were most anxious
tor tno nanny or ngntweight eattlo and
they wero picked up first, holders of such
reporting the market as fully stendv. In
some eases sellers thought they got a little
stronger prices even than yesterday for
choice handy weights. On the other hnnd
tho market on heavy eattlo even If of
pretty good quality was slow and very
mucn inellnfil to drag. While the light
weight eattlo were all snapped up early In
tho morning, thn heavy cattle were not sold
in many cases until tne very last.
Cows nnd heifers were In good demand
and sold quickly at steady prices. One load
of heifers with only four steers In the
load brought $4. 10. Hulls, stags, etc., sold
In about the same notches as yesterday.
Thin cattle were in good demand for
stockers nnd commanded firm prices. The
supply was very light of that kind nnd tho
offerings were nil taken early. Wormed
up or half-fat cattle are not selling to
nmount to nnythlng to the feeder buyers
ns It Is most too late In the season. Rep
