Tho excellent report of tho condition of

differences of opinion as to, tho size of the
crop, reasoning from the olllclal tlKiires as
to percentile and acreage, It was Ron
orally admitted that It would be liberal.

MOVKMBSTS OF STOCKS AMI IIOMIS.

NEW YORK. April 17.-Tho published
opinions nnd assertions of Mr. J. W. Gates,
chairman of tho American Steel nnd Wire
company, regnrdlng tho present conditions
nnd tho outlook for tho future In tho Iron
nnd steel trado occimle1 tin. nttnntinr, f
dealers In stocks and bonds to the almost
iy 1 ..-;i."ion 01 an oilier matters todnv.
Demoralization nnd confusion wore tho re
sults. A striking commentary upon the
J)Lal. .. rc,fJ work m p "'"Ck market Is
that tho Iron nnd steel stocks nro the only
ones that show striking net gains, whllo
tho net losses everywhere else are undoubt
eill) duo to the feaw of unsound conditions
or tho Iron trado and In tho securities of
corporations In that trade. When tho ur
gent demand for the Iron and steel stocks
was perceived Immediately nftcr the open
ing drop in them there was a feeling of
relief reflected In a lively recovery of prices
all around. The first Interpretation of tho
buying of ths stocks was that It contra
dicted thp gloomy assertions of tho chair
man of tho Steel and Wlro company. The
conviction seemed to gather force that this
buying might simply represent tho taking
of.Proll? by the bears, who had sold In
anticipation of tho recent heavy declines
In these stocks.
The insertions of Chnlrmnn Gates of
overproduction In tho trnde and tho neces.
slty ror concessions In prices wore met by
a chorus of disclaimers by representatives
of other companies In tho metnl Industries
and by authorities In tho trade. Thcso
d sclalmers were accompanied by much
bitter Invective and questioning of motive.
Tho reassurance derived from this source
had much to do with the general rally
after tho opening, but It was not sufficient
to allay all doubts cnused by tho concrcto
fact of the closing down of a large num
ber of tho mills of tho steel and wire com
pany. Ono of tho authorities who sought to con
trovert the position of Chairman Gates nr
supd that If tho Iron nnd steel Industry
Is In as bad condition ns Mr. Gntes pnlnted
then practically nil securities arc 50 per
cent too high. This authority meant to
enforce, his view thnt the high level of
securities prices and the general prosperity
of tho country In themselves serve to con
trovert tho view thnt the Iron trnde Is un
sound, hut tho belief Is deep-rooted among
stock oocrntors that the Iron trado Is a
true Indox of tho business of the country.
Tho doubt cast upon Its soundness by so
prominent nn nuthorlty proved too much
for the equanimity of holders of stocks nnd
toward tho latter part of tho day these
securities wero thrown upon tho market
by tho wholesale. Stocks which have been
speculative favorites for a rise wero not tho
chief sufferers. Missouri Pacific. Norfolk &
estern nnd tho Baltimore & Ohio stocks
wero comparatively well held, while tho
higher priced stocks which nro selling- high
in proportion to tho dividend return showed
larser declines.
A late rally in tho market made It evi
dent as to how largo nn extent short sell
ing Imd to do with the loss nnd recoveries
reaching over a point In many cases, whllo
tho iron and steel stocks closed 1 to 2 points
above Inst night's level for tho leading
members of tho group. Tho general news
or tho day nnd money mnrket conditions
wero entirely Ignored In the trndlng. Thero
was no such pressure manifest In the bond
market as In tho stock market nnd strong
points wero munlfest here and there. Total
sales, par value. $2,400,000. United States

disappointing, causing the worst prices.

CATTLE Thero wero 150 cars of cattle
of nil kinds In tho yards this morning, which
was no great run for a Tuesday, but quite
good considering tho state of tho weather.
Tho market as a wholo was In a most
fnvorablo condition for the sellers and ns
a rulo everyono was well pleased with the
day's operations.
Handy weight beef steers of good quality
wero In demand nnd tho market was active
nnd a little stronger on that kind. Every
thing that would answer to thnt descrip
tion changed hnnds In a very short time,
nnd it was not long until tho pens were
cleared. Heavy cattle were not In quite
such active demand for tho reason that
thero have been more good heavy cattle
coming of late and buyers did not appear to
bo so anxious for them. At the same time
the demand was good on tho part of both
local packers and shippers and tho market
reasonably nctlvo at steady prices.
Cows and heifers were active sellers at a
llttlo stronger prices. There appears to bo
nn exceedingly good demand for tho stuff
nnd the market haB been firming up so that
cows nre high as compared with the way
other kinds of cattle nro selling. Every
thing In tho way of cow stuff was sold and
weighed up at an early hour. Bulls wero
Just p.bout steady with yesterday, but they
seem to sell a little better than laBt week.
Stockers and feeders wero In fair demand
nnd ns there were very few fresh arrivals
tho offerlrgs were soon disposed of at good,
steady prices. Representative ales:
