CATTLE Today's' run of cattle was a
good deal of a disappointment. Chicago
'had expected 20.000 or more for today, but
' instead fell several thousand short, and
all tho other markets, Including this one,
, wero lightly supplied. Tho result was that
I buyers seemed to feel tnut there wore
1 hardly enough cuttle to go the rounds and
I they got out Into the yards earlier than
usual una snnppcu up cverywmiB ... buu.l
order. In fuel It wiib about the most ac
tive, markot that has been experienced In a
long time. Tho prices paid for beet steers
were 61fl0o higher thim last week, but as
there was nothing choice among tho offer
ings tho salcf do not show up as high a on
somo days hist week. Still there wero some
protty fair cattle hero und as high ns $l.8o
was paid for some.
Cows nnd heifers were lu. Just as good de
mand as beef eteers and the market was
active on that kind also and SfilOc higher.
It did not tnko buyers very long to clear
the yards and sellers wero extremely well
pleased with tho market. All kinds of
butchers' stock seemed to he In demaiitl
ana even flit bulls sold pretty well to what
t'hey have been doing.
Not many stockcrs und feedcrp wr In
sight, while tho demand was fair, and the
few here met with ready sale nt a little
stronger prices. The ndvunce on beef cnttle
seemed to reassure feeder buyers nnd helped
to strengthen the market on that kind of
cattle. Representative sales:

Tho stock growers' convention, which meets
In Denver tomorrow, will 'ho attended by a
number of representative cattle and sheep
misers front this state. They look upon
this gathering as an Importaut ono to their
Interests and all will take nn uctlvo part
i In the discussions at tho same. A few of
I the Wyoming men nro against the leasing
, of tho public lands of tho arid land states,
but a majority favor leasing nnd say this
Is tho only solution of the range question
Ono of these men, who Is probably tho best
known sheep man In this section, said:
"When this land leasing question was
started I thought as many of my neighbors
did that It was a scheme of n few cattle
men to get control of the free range and
drlvo out the sheepmen. 1 was one of many
who Hlgtted the petition protesting to the
general government against land leasing
and calling upon congress to pass no Itind
leaslng bills. Slnco then, however, I have
given tho matter more consideration and
have arrived at the conclusion that I was
wrong. The leasing of the rango to sheep
and cattln raisers In small tracts, or In
tracts sulllclent for their needs, Is, In my
opinion, the proper thing to do, It will do
nwny with the constant strife over a divi
sion of the range nnd will make tho sheep
men nnd cattlemen friends Instead of
enemies. There Is plenty of land In Wyom
ing, enough for n third again ns many cnt
tlo and sheep ns are now ranged within
the borders of tho slate, and all that Is
needed Is n Just nud equitable division of the
same among tho owners of llvo stock ns It
Is applied for. I do not favor tho leasing
of too large tracts, hut, of course, the Intnl
board would exercise Its Judgment In this
respect. All this talk agout a few wealthy
men buying tho land olllco olllclals nnd get
ting control of the free range Is puro -ot.
Tho olllclals are elected from among tho
peoplo nnd hy tho peoplo and should they
deslro to do such a thing It would bo Im
possible." Prayers for Relief from I'lngnf.
