organized a short time ago for the purpose
of bringing nbout a better government In the
public schools. One of the prominent mem
bors of the league said yesterday: "The
present board Is n very expensive luxury to
tho taxpayers of this city and now Is the
tlmo to start a reform by voting for good
men on the Hoard of Kducatlon."
A thorough examination of the records of
tho board has been wade, with a view to
ascertaining how much It has cost the people
to maintain tho schools slnco 1S00.
If or tho school year of 1896-7 the total cos!
was J52.CC2.4I, with a cost per child of J18.7t,
Tho term of 1S97-8 cost the taxpayers f 61.-
199.38, or J1S.11 per child.
During tho school year of 1S98-9 the
Ilcnrd of Kducntlon spent J75, 153.50. thus
making tho averago cost per pupil 121.18.
Tho school year of 1899-1900 shows nn enor
mous Increaso In expenses. It will require
an expenditure of J105.000 for tho present
fiscal year under contracts already maue
Taking tho average attendance-, tho cost
this vear is J20.39 ner child. It may De
