CHICAGO, March 20.-A bulge of 60c In
tho prlco of Miiy pork, the result of a rmull
punia among shorts in that nrtlclc, wns
the feature of tlie trailing on 'chango today.
Tim nilviinco won duo to fenr of a corner
In tho short stocks and tho mnrket re
uctcd aulcker than It had risen when tho
stuff onco began to come on the market.
May pork closed 2&c lower; Inrd and ribs,
fifi'iHc. lower. Wheat was dull, but fairly
toady, helped by better foreign demand,
anil closed '.fcffVic hlRher. Corn declined Vie
nnd oat." closed a shade lower. A be'lef
was prevalent that all the markets were
being manipulated by a clique of scalpers.
Knrly trading In wheat was marked by
considerable liquidation. Cables were lower
t the oinln? and continued to decline,
which, with the continued largo receipts
In tho northwest and tho absence of for
eign demand left the market practically
without support. May opened unchanged
nt Mfifli'Ai'. Pressure to liquidate, which
soon became quite general, forced tho price
back to ffi'M'. Ilelow this price, however,
tho bcurn could not force the market nnd
shortly before tl o'clock a good demand
sprnne up. local shorts and outsiders giv
ing support to the market and advancing
the prlco to 66c. This demand satisfied
the market again relapsed Into a condition
of heaviness, with tho price (Hie uniting
within a narrow range. During the last
hour of trading strength again developed.
The vlrlhle. decrease. 1.32S.0OO bushels, was
more than expected. This stiffened the mar
ket appreciably, and when tho seaboard
rrportcd an Improved foreign demnnd buy
ing beeame qulto brisk, the May prlco
rrachlnz tho best point of tho day, 66c.
The market closed steady at tint nrlce.
Chicago receipts were fit cars. Minneap
olis and Dultuh receipts wore TIG earn, com
pared with 912 last week and 363 a year
ago. Total primary receipts were fill. 000
bushels'. Clearances from Atlantic and gulf
ports amounted to 111,000 bushels. The sea
board reported 30 loads taken for cxnort,
whllo 170,000 bushels were, sold hero for
shipment. Clilcupo contract stocks de
creased 91,000 bushels for the week.
Corn war dull and Inclined to weakness,
prices ruling a little lower all day. News
was not of a character to materially In
fluence prices nnd the market was appar
ently controlled by scalpers. Country offer
ings were reported a little more liberal.
Tho shipping demand was only moderate.
Receipts were fio.1 cars, May ranged from
3"',4c to 37M?37',tc nnd closed ',4c lower at
37!ic.
Trading In oats showed no Indications of
recovcrlnsr from Its present condition of
almost utter stagnation. Speculative busi
ness was Inslgnltlcnnt nnd prices kept well
within tho usual narrow range. The feel
ing was rather heavy In sympathy with
corn, Reeclptu were 315 cars. Mny ranged
ifrom 21c to 2iy2IUc and closed a simile,
lower at 21c.
Provisions were active, tho market nt
times being In a seml-pnnlrky condition, so
far an pork was concerned, and the prlco
of that commodity covered n wldo raiisc.
Small stocks of pork, the continued advance
In tho prlco of hogs nnd fear that a corner
might bo nttcmpted, brought about a
strong buying movement shortly after the
opening, and as tho price went skyward
shorts tumbled over themselves In their
eagerness to cover. The nrlco advanced 50c
in a very few minutes. Then offers became,
liberal and the market fell a great denl
barter than It had advanced, 30o belns
clipped off tho advance In about two min
utes. Liter another selling flurry chopped
off 30c more, but beforo the closo confidence
had been restored nnd the prlco had again
ndvnnced to about yesterday'!' closing fig
ures. Inter In the session 'thero was con
elderablo selling pressure put on Inrd and
ribs and those commodities suffered In con
sequence, pork al$v weakening somewhat.
The closo was rather nervous, with Mny
pork 2'Ac lower at ill. 40; Mav lard. "!tc

NEW YORK, March 20.-There was a bril
liant display of speculative pyrotechnics in
thn stock mnrket today, which wns Inter
esting nnd Informing ns 11 spectnelo, but
which must hnvc been tittended with very
unpleasant circumstances for some one.
Tho exploslvo outbreak took place In tho
Nnv Vo-k traction group and was precipi
tated b) tho ofllclal antuuncement pub
lished this morning that the Metropolitan
Strtet Railway had secured a controlling
Interest In the Third Avenue railroad.
This at onco conllrmed the fears of tho
shorts, which have been quite acutely mani
fested for scvernl days, that theru was not
11 largo enough supply of Third Avenue
stock on the market to enablu them to cover
their unfilled contracts for delivery. In
other words, the stock was cornered. Tho
result, brlelly stated, was a Jump of nearlj
17 points in the price on top of yesterday's
rlso of nearly 19 points. The violent rise In
the stock brought out large lots from long
holders, which caused many relapses and
made wldo and feverish fluctuations nil day.
Rut when tho shorts attempted to supply
their needs the price always mounted up
ward ugaln. Tho New York public utilities
nave tieen the favorite Held of operation by
tho 'bears for several days past and the
sympathetic strength Imparted to the group
toy th Metropolitan-Third Avenue combina
tion drove tho shorts to cover with a rush.
The extreme ndvances In the group were:
Metroiiolltnn, llli; Hrooklyn Transit, V,";
Consolidated Gas, 7; Hrooklyn Union, 5, and
Manhattan, 4U. The possibilities of econ
omy of operation and elimination of de
structlvo rivalries as a result of the com
bination undoubtedly Improve the status
of the Metropolitan and Third Avenue prop
erties, but the price movement of the day
wns almost wholly duo to speculative ex
igencies. Third Avenue stock (.-ommanded
ns high ns 4 per cent premium for use on
loans. There was furious manipulation In
the stock all day, as was evidenced by the
simultaneous sales on regular transactions
and on sellers sixty-day contracts nt nearly
10 points apart, tho regular sale command
ing the high price. Other stocks In which the
short Interest has been prominent largely
reflected tho urgent demand from the shorts,
notably Sugar. American and Continental
'lobacco, People's Gas nnd Western Union,
which rose 1 to 31(,
Speculation In tho railroad list was rather
dull during the period of feverish excite
ment In tho specialties, but later In the
day an nctlvo and vlsorous demand sprang
up for Dnltlmorc & Olilo, the Pacltlcs, some
of the grangers, Wheeling & Lalso Erie sec
ond preferred and n number of less promi
nent stocks. Baltimore & Ohio was carried
up 4U points, The highest prices were not
maintained in any case, the violently specu
lative specialties showing tho sharpest re
actions, but the closing generally was
rather easy, below the best, and the net
changes, though mostly gnlns, were very
ragged as to uniformity. The Iron und steel
stocks wero rather heavy, notably National
Steel and Tennessee Conl.
Tho money market showed evidences of
relaxation. The continued decline in price
of government bonds indlcntes a process of
Iquldatlon which suggests that tho recent
level of prices prompted the changing of
plans for taking out banknote circulation
arid tho celling out of holdings of bonds.
I he railroad bond market continued ac
tive, hut price changes were rather Irregu
lar, 'lotal sales, oar value. J2.475.roo. tinite.i

CATTLE The liberal run or cuttle antici
pated for today materialized and tho gen
eral tendency of values was lower. The
general market was a little slow and for
that reason It took the most of tho fore
noon to cfvect nnything like a clearance.
There tvro probably all of sixty loads
of cornfed steers in the yards nnd buyers
seemed to feel that they had plenty of
tlm nnd thnt there was no occasion for
harte. ThJ result was that It was late be
foro they got down to business. Sellers
reported In n few Instances the first cnttlo
sold ns bringing about yesterday's prices,
but ns n rule the mnrket was 10c lower.
Buyers claimed that they pnld steady prices
for n few, but generally admitted that thn
mnrket very quickly eased off and
closed 10c lower. The general quality was
fair and among the offerings there were a
few right gooil steers.
Tho best grades of cows nnd heifers sold
nt about steady prices and a? there was
a good demand the choicest loads were
soon picked up. On the other hand th
market was slow and lower on tho common
kinds. Common kinds of eanners as was
noted yesterday are a good deal lower
than last week. Bulls nre not verv nood
wller and th market does not show much

S1IKKP The market onened nhmit ti
on sheep, but slow and dragRy on Iambs.
Quite a good mnny of the enrly nrrlvals
of sheep changed hnnds in n short tlmo
after tho market opened, but the cenernl
mnrket was not very active nnd it closed
slow nnd a little lower on nil kinds.
It looks very much as If buyers were de
termined to break the lamb market nnd
the Renrrnl nnlnlon appears to bo that they
will succeed If receipts at the different mnr
ket points hold up. Ruyers themselves
say that lambs will be lower before another
week rolls around. It remains to bo seen
If they are right.
