might havo defied a front attack, but a
division of eavalry outflanked It, passing
west from Llouwemburg. Tho defenders
thereupon retired precipitately to nloem
fonteln, where a quarrel ensued, tho Trans
vaalers threatening to burn tho town unless
the Free Staters defended It.
Further reports of our advance cnused a
stampede. Thirteen trains, each of forty
crowded wagons, pushed northward before
tho line was cut by Weston Fisher, who only
succeeded In catching tho last train. Driv
