E Slnco the arrest of Albert Davis on the f chugo or robblug postotllee station B of nearly $300 on the day when ha was plucel ! n charge of the elco upon the arrest of lttchard Phoenix tor embezzlement Davis' lrknds have been busy scarching for evidence denco which would eletr the young man of thu charge. They elelm to have eecurud onou'll evidence to accomplish this object , but unnounco their Intention of keeping up tin ) luvosllgntloa tmt4 tlw guilty man is found. 10 the work of BIvestlgution the safe and snrrotuidings at atntlon 11 were carefully examined , and the people living In tilt' nelgh- horhnod there quttttancd. It woo learned lint lho man residing over the postolilce had nbout d o'clock on th0 morning the robbery - bery was dlseovrred heard 11 nolse in the building as of some Otto nhahlmg the stove , 1VIth this as a chic the safe wan examined , When it wits learned that the rarriera at the station had known of the matter for some litho time and had kept quiet for fear of being involved in the else. The tarp is a Inrgo one with double doors. It has two drawers In the center , the upper one being where the stamp money was kept and the lower wus used for the money order f1mds , the latter dresser' containing the i money which Davis is charged with stealing. Thn outer doors of the safe show no signs or being tampered with , proving to the sat- I Isfaction or nil that the money was taken by some one having time combination to the safe. When lheso doors me opened it in ovldent , nccording to the investigators , that the drawers were not opened with the keys Which were in thu pocket of Albert Davis , 1171(1 that these were the only keys with which they could be opened Is shown by the fact that the duplicate keys were and still are in the drawers. t Ruiz It May time Ileen Ilouc. The shaker to the grate of the stove is always attached to the grate , but easily removable , and the Investigator , in the presemico of the clerk at the station , took this shaker , and fitting tire small cad into the marks aircady on the upper drawer- ) marks said to have been made on the night of the robbery-forced the thin wood above limo drawer away from the bolt of the lock so that the drawer was opened , and then with the same pressure and making no deeper marks , forced the drawer shut so that it was apparently locked as before. This act satisfied those who saw it that the up per drawer had been opened without a key , ! but they pointed to the absence of marks on thu lower drawer as evidence that a key Lad been used upon it. Close observation showed two small marks Linen limo upper edge of the lower tiraecr , bit they would not fit any part of the shaker. In the safe , and attached to it by 11 chain , is the key which is used to open the registered mail sacks. It is a thin j piece of steel about three tuches long and h halt an inch % Ii0. The edge of it fits the i' ' marks upon the lower drawer , and witbout h making those marks more pronounced the 'j ' Investigator forced the lower drawer open , } , (111(1 then closed it so that the fact that it T Lad been force ] could not ho discovered. I a Investigation of the building shows that it i is easy for any one to gain entrance to it , i A window opening Into tire basement at the I front of the building is fastened , if at nil , with small nails , which can easily be bent by pressure from the outside , and under f tine window is a pile of anthracite coal upon i whleh no mark will be made by a person t wanting through it. Once in the basement , ncccsa to the postoflco is easy through a 1j trap door , which is never fastened , and i wliich is reached by a flight of stairs. I ' 1 transpires that when Davis went to t ho , L , home of Itlchnrd I'boonlx to secure the combination bination to the safe on the night of the robbery ho told Phoenix that he had nut sent the money to the central office. It is said that Phoenix had given the combination to other parties , and when a reporter called at Phoenix's home to Interview him upon the subject , It was said that he was out of town and that his family did not know when lie would return , VALENTINE DAY IN OMAHA J , ( ( ( Cnrrirrsnle a ilei I % al of flue , tnclrnt Uusloat tiVhl'lt for sc - t'rnl Years 11'a. on the Wear , St. Valentine's day was more generally observed iii Omaha yesterday than for several years previous and the letter carriers note ) Oil increase in their budgets when they started out in the morning through the resl- denvc districts.
