NEW YORK. Feb. 9. There seemed to be
a complete withdrawal today of the gen

was so conspicuous a factor In the active
trading of the early days of the week. The
two days' reaction In prices served to dis

commission house.- } fell to practically noth-
ItiK. There was a continual dribble of
realizing sales all day .and the bears In
dustriously peeked at the market here and
there , wherever they detected evidences of
realizing or of long stock offered for sale.
The most notable price movements were
In the speculative Industrials and special
ties. Late In the day on the report of anew
now British reverse at Ladysmlth the
bears made a determined raid on Sugar
and Third Avenue , forcing : them off an ex
treme . " ' 'ie and R'.te , respectively.
The general list failed to respond In any
marked drgrce and support was accorded
to the stocks attacked , forcing the bears to
cover. They made a final attempt against
SI. Paul , but the market closed generally
Ilrm and at rallies In the stocks which had
been attacked of from 1 to 2'j. ' The tone In
the general list was listless and heavy for
the greater part of the day and It was not
greatly affected either by the late attack
ot the bears or by the llnal rally. Net
losses reached a point In only a few stocks.
American Tobacco was a conspicuous ex
ception to the general weakness during
the day and after an early decline rallied
str.ingly 3U , closing at about the best.
There was good demand for Erie llrsts pre
ferred , which carried It up at one time IS ,
most of the gain being lost.
Much doubt exists as to the probable ef
fect on this market of further British re
verses In the South African war and the
confusion of mind was clearly reflected In
the late movement of the market. The
forecast of the bank statement had lee
much to do with the disinclination to ex
tend speculative commitments. The recent
inox'enient of funds from the stlbtreasury
to the banks has been reversed and the
latter Institutions have lost on that ac
count $6S5,000. The shipments of money to
the Interior have Increased over last week
nnd the receipts have diminished so that
the net gain on that account has been out
down to a little over $1,000,000. Allowing for
the subtreasury absorptions the week's
gain In cash will therefore be Insignificant.
The liquidation of speculative profits In
the Stock exchange during the week may
have relieved somewhat the pressure on
the banks for credits.
The call money market has not shown
any Increased pressure for funds , but the
rules for time money were distinctly
tinner in tone. Loans on exceptional col
lateral were made early in the week at 3'4
per cent for short periods , but the mini
mum rate today was advanced to 4 per
cent. Sterling exchange also hardened In
sympathy with the discount rates In Lon
don. The rather violent break In the
prices of cotton on speculative liquidation
probably had some sympathetic effect In
the stock market.
Business In the bond market fell off con
siderably and price changes were Irreg
ular. Total sales , par value , $1SOT > ,000.
United States bonds were unchanged In
bid quotation.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says : This was a day
of adverse war rumors in the market hero
and falling prices restricted business. Con
sols were 101 % , but closed at 10H on the
news of General MacDonald's retirement ,
It being apprehended that his reinforce
ments had been Intercepted. Paris was
disturbed by the report from Boer sources
that General Buller bad again been driven
across the Tugela. The continued talk of
mutiny of the Egyptian forces also caused
an uneasy feeling , and wild hints were cur-
vent today that the eighth army division
had been sent to Egypt Instead of Africa.
Not one of these rumors was confirmed.
Americans were steady till afternoon , when
London sold freely In the midst of the gen
eral unresti New York took Erie llrst
preferred , leaving the rest of the list alone.
Grand Trunks were an exception , being
boomed on the surprising dividend. The
bank bought JC31,000 gold In bars. Money-
was scarcer than it lias been , but for bills
there was only small application. Silver
closed at 2716 on Indian eastern buying.

CATTLE As was to be expected after the
storm , the run of cattle today was light
only about sixty loads nil told being re
ported In the yards , and of that number
tifteen cars were direct to packers from
Kansas City , so that the offerings on the
market were small.
It was very much such a market as Is
often experienced when the receipts are
too small to excite mtieh Interest among
buyers that Is. the general market seemed
to bo slow , and yet the cattle were for the
most part sold In good season. As a rule
sellers were reporting It as a steady market ,
init at the same time there were those who
did not think that they got out as well as
yesterday. Taking everything into consid
eration , however. It was not a bad market.
Cows and heifers were in good demand
and sold at good , strong prices. There
appears to he a constant demand for that
kind of cattle and as 'the ' arrivals at this
point are far from large the mnrknt Is In
good shape right along and prices are high
ns compared with the way beef steers are
selling. Bulls , stags , etc. . are also Helling
at steady prices. Veal calves nre. In good
demand and scarce , so that the market Is
high.
The stocker nnd feeder trade was slow
aivri without feature of interest. Only a few
cattlft arc on sale , but speculators had
plenty. Representative sales :

HOGS Considering tlie severity of yes

was a fair run of IIORH liere , some fifty
loads lielnff reported In DID yards. Ad
vices from eastern selllnir iiolniH were
very eiicouraKliiK , and I be market bere was

terday's early market and 5o higher than
yesterday's close. The curly market was
reasonably active , and u Rood many of ( he
IIOKH chaiiKcd hands In a tdiort time. Pack
ers' messages from Chicago Indicated that
the market at that point WHH slow at llio
advance , and the feeling among them
seemed tu be that the close would bo
easier. For that reason some of the local
packers were In no hurry to fill orders , and
after the opening the market here slowed
up u little and was not particularly active , I
but still II wan active enough to effect

There was a moderate run of
sheep and lambs In the yards this mornIng -

good. The result was that the market
was active and everything sold at a.n early
hour. Pet haps the best way to explain tlK"
condition of the market Is tu call It IMiKV
higher for the week. Buyers seem to want
the stuff even at the high prices , so that
the market Is In a peed , healthy condition.
Homo western lambs sold nt the highest
