From Its four lieads in the Boston moun tains to Batesvllle , where It leaves the and enters the Arkansas Ion lands. White river Is a succession of astonishing curves. No other rhcr on the continent so nearl > nnd FO frequently doublca upon It self. From the source to the flat country Is a distance on a straight line of perhaps 150 miles. White rhcr , between these points , has a course of over COO miles ; some esti mates make It 1,000 miles. The beginning is near the Indian territory border , in the western part of Arkansas , re ports the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. The water runs toward all points of the compass In quick succession many times before it adopts a comparathely direct course to the Mississippi. From the Boston mountains the general course , with many a bend and curve. Is northward , and northeastward Into Missouri. Probably the highest point in this direction Is Forsyth , near the center of Taney county. From this place the "S'bHo wriggles Its way back into Arkansas and down through Marlon county , to where the Buffalo joins It. But not until the M' sourl-Arkansas border has been crossed seven times does the un certain btrcam finally bear away to the southeastward to stay. Adding to the marvel of White river's ec centric mcanderings lire the walls of roclc which tower from 200 to 500 feet often from the water's edge. A birdscyo view from aboio would Fhow the river deep set in f capyon of continuous and often sharp curv atures. On a bright day a stretch of the winding rher seen from tno summit of the palisades shimmers like w-ell polished silver. Only when heavy rainfall occurs In the watershed of the AVhlte does the water lose its dlstincthe color. Even then , while the rocky surface sends to the river a consid erable portion of the rainfall stained by the \cgetatlon and the soil , the greater part sinks Into underground reservoirs nnd courses , and. hlowly filtering and settling , reaches the river through the sprigs , which defy the lonpest drouth period. White rher booms for a few days with a mighty flow after protracted rains. A forty- foot rise is not extraordinary In the con tracted parts of the valley. The water as sumes a dlrtv whitish look. But the flood subsides quickly , the current clarifies even cnoro rapidly and the river runs steadily during the dry season. It is not want of water which causes the unnavlgablo stage. It Is the character of the channel a series of Irng levels and of short rapids. If the current was evenly distributed there would be depth enough for the lightest-draft stern-wheelers all the year. Many jears ago Foreyth was reached by steamboats on White river. The bold nav igators pushed their Etern-wheolerH to the foot of the rapids. Then they sent tne roust abouts clambering over rocks and through the trees dragging the tow line its full length. The upper end was strongly fastened to stand the strain. The boat end of the haw ser was wound around the capstan. With the paddle wheels driven by c\ery pound of pressure available and with the donkey engine winding In the tow line the boat diagged and pushed itself up foot by foot through the foaming rapids After the passage was made n long reach of smooth deep water made easy progress for perhaps twenty , perhaps fifty miles. In this way Forsjth was reached. And when the boat , "loaded lo the guards" with lead and cotton and hogs and the various prod- uts of the White rl\er country , turned prow down stream , there was little to do but to trust to Pro'idenco and the man behind the wheel. The current did the rest. One day , In a spirit of daring , Captain llatemun said be was going to take the Mary C to Forsyth If It was her last trip. Ho made Mcllees and tbo other landings above Buffalo City and triumphantly awoke the echoes of tbo heights of Pine mountain as the boat came In sight of Forsyth. But pride went before the worst fall that could happen to a ttteamboatcaan. In try ing to turn the Mary C to bead down stream the captain failed to gauge the width of the channel. He "ran her nozrlo ag'in the bank" on one fide. The stern went around with a sweep and lodged against a Hravcl bar on the other side The Mary C lay for a few moments broadside * in the channel , blocking it. There wan creaking and groaning. Tbo bog chains parted. The Mar } ' C's "back was broken " Tbo wrec.lt lay there until tbo elements wore It to pieces , Tbat was tbs end of navigation to Foreytb. Trull. Detroit Journal- This particular truct , It teemod. bad issued 10,000 ( shares of entirely new stock. "Quite a plum for somebody ! " observed the Lay Figure. "More of a watermllllon , perhaps ! " Inter- potod the Unconscious Imbecile , affecting n approximation of tbe Afro-American dialect for tbe occasion As for tbe others , they Idugh at ome , tliub ; idroitl ) escaping tbe tedium of having tbe point explained t < j them. _
