This morning there was a high wind blowing , with the ther mometer down to zero , or below , with the air full of drifting snow , so that no one ventured out who was not obliged to go. H wns a very poor day for a market nnd It was fortunate Unit there was BO little stock here1. The few trains In were late In arilvlng and the stock eme ; straggling lu all the forenoon , SQ that nt no time was there enough stuff on sale to really make a market. CATTLE The storm wns so severe and there were so few cattle that It was late before buyers were out. Besides that many of the trains were late , IIH noted above , so t.hnt It W H after the middle of the forenoon before buyers attempted to do anything. The tr.iele could hardly be called a market , as there were , not enough e-attle to really establish quotations. Chicago came lower nnd had there been any great uumlier of cattle In the yards the market here would undoubtedly have been lower. As It was the few cattle here sold , If anything , stronger than yesterday. Th" feeling among operators regarding the future of the cattle market appears to b& bearish and the opinion seems jo be gaining ground that packers are determined to noiind down the market. At the same lime R Is pointed out that while fat eattle ate no higher than a year ago ihe product Is bringing considerably more than It was a year ago. There were a few cows and heifers In the yards this morning and buyers seemed to want that kind of cattle , which sold eiulte readily as a rule at strong yesterday prices. There Is a good demand for cow stuff right along , while the mipply Is light. There was practically nothing doing In stockers or feeders. Representative sales : BEEF STEERS. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. It was nearly an hour bcOillid time when It crossed the Kin- ftiiK-Colornd ) Hue and was trying to make up as munli as pos-slMo of the lost time before the next division pnlnt should be reae-hed. It > was early morning , relates the K.in.'as C'lly Star , and the little scattered stations did ne > t make much trouble by flaggliiK the train for jnsaoiigers. iso the train fairly flew over the rails. Altitude gave us a down grade and the way dlstaiico was covered made the Inexperlcjiccd helper In the marvel. express car , , , , , , TJin old express messenger had finished the mornlnt's work and stowed away all the boxes and package * where they \\ould be easy to ci-t at and now sat on ills ptool with the door of the express e-ar half open , for the morning wa.s pleasant and Uio : .lr. though bracing , was not cold. "I want you to notle-e the big cut ju.n ahead , " he said in a icmlnlscetit way. which convinced the helper that there was a good story In sluhl. "The cut Is nearly half n mile long and , as you will notice , twenty- live feet deep in places. Here she Is now. You ae-o It's a hole of some magnitude. "Yc4irs ago , before this country vas net tled much , 1 had un experlenve in this cut. The sn.iw came early that winter and the snowstorms were heavier than usual. One > night we pulled out of Denver with sno.v all over the track and wehadn't gone very far before It was clear that we must have- two engines or there was no telling when we would get through. Well , the extra en- glno was hitched on and aw.iy we. went , a double-header Irving to make up lime , with snow on the track and the svlnd blowing llfty miles an hour. The wind was ro high that It drove -mow through ill" windows c.C the co.iehcs and pa-ssengeis shivered end duns : round the heater to keep from freez ing."If "If you never g-oti caught In a blizzard em th plains you won't understand what a storm l.iut was. But : he two engines were working well and the poor firemen were kept Jumping. I remember very well that I thought of all sorts of posplble acci dents coming from hard running on a track lu the condition the road was In that nlghi , but 1 kept digging away at my work , wondering when It would ever stop.Vc were running through level country , where the snow line ! been blown away by the heavy wind and we had a long stretch of track that was almost clear before reachIng - Ing tMs cut. The men on the engines thought of this eir. . They knew the coun try well enough to know that there was a i snow bank ahead , but they llgured they could shoot through It with the Impc us | of the heavy uraln. How we flew for a few mllef ! I have done plenty of fast riding , but f won't soon forget that. All of a sud den I could feel the train slacking Its speed. It slacked quicker than w en the air is on , but It was a steady slacking and It soon on mo : < > a de-ad stop. I threw the fide door of tlie car ooen and found my self flat against a solid wall of snow. It wan as smooth as a brick wall and Just about as solid. AVe had run Into this cut and gene until we were in snow to the top of thn car. "When the conductor climbed out on the slcas of the last coach he could see that 5iww war ui > to the- smokestack of the fremt engine. Never was , i wedge driven more tluhtly into a log than we were In that pack of solid snow. The two engines could not back us out and there we pluck ten milts from a town and nlmo.st as far from any human habitation. The trainmen dlscusse-d the situation , not without some- swearing , and finally a brakeman se > ! out to make his waj.- through the blizzard to a station to report the fix we were in to the nearest division headquarters. "There was a little elay olP.ee out on the prnlrlc , where a station aqent lived and he managed to reach -without freezing to death. But by the time the word couln be sent lo luudquarters the road was tied up for 200 miles each side of us and to uet to us the the FIIOW plows had two days of hard work. The passengers cleaned up every thing In Ihe Pullman for breakfast nr.el complained that they were still hungry. We were down on our luck for sure , but there Is a rule of the express compinle > s i'-at allows a certain latitude In emerfienclep nnd when everybody got hungry along In ihe afternoon I i-duilied the conclusion that we had nn emergency sure enough. " 1 had in 'the. express car two cacos .f ejBS. Not another thing In the e-.ir could 'be ' eaten. Now ejrgs ore goorl [ hlugs , l-ut they don't make steady diet all nloue. so we sent to a hoiife about two miles mvay for whatever we could buy. It w.is along In the afternoon by this time and the wind Jiad died down , but the cold was terrible. However , hunser Is won-e and two men made the trip to the settler's house. They got a sack of meal , but the settler didn't have much and could not t-ji.'iro anything else. I had boiled eggs lor tlielr dinner , bun i wasn't much of a cook t nv- lidw nnd then I had nothing to cook with but eggs and common ! and iiothlnt ; to cook In but : m old pall. I wasn't In 'shap" to I furnish a dining car meal Hut that made ' no difference. " 1 didn't hear a Mugle kick on my rook- Ing1 and It was Just as well that they did not kick , for I wasn't leriulred to do any c'ookln ? and the cither trainmen did rot want my Jab.V stayed In that r'rift < Wo elays and two nights before tm-y could clf-ar the track and pull us out. The cunipiinv paid for the eggs and squared us with the t-liipiier. who ptc'bably never did know what became of them. "Rut there's Jim whlHlllnir for a station.
