His visit here a this time will be to look the ground ovc and attend to the preliminaries for Becurln the necessary trackage and land , on whlc to locate the plant. According to recen statements made by Mr. Selbel , the compan which ho represents Intends building th coke plants this summer. The present plans of the Universal I'm company are to erect coke plants of 100 oven each In Ottumwa , Des Molnes , Counc Bluffs , Davenport and Dubuque. The flrf plant to bo built will bo the one In Dn biuiue , the company at present being ur decided whether Dea Molnes or this city wl get the second plant first. Statements mad by Mr Sclbol are to the effect that the coa of erecting 100 o\ens will bo $85,000 and Ilia the construction of the plant will give era ployment to about 100 skilled laborers. Eac o\en , It Is estimated , will coke about flv I tons of coal every twenty-four hours and th | plant wjll gi\e constant employment to aboi forty men. The company hopes , by man ufacturing coke In large quantities , to fur nlsh fuel for all the manufacturing plant In this city and Omaha , the coke to take th place of soft coal , thus doing away with th dirt and smoke Incident to the use of tli latter. The company will not manufacture ga Heclf , but stands ready to bring In an out side concern which will erect a $200,000 ga works. Contrary to reports which hav hitherto been published , gas will not h manufactured for lighting , but simply fo fuel , KO the entrance of this new compan can. luue no bearing on the municipal light Ing question. The gas will bo of a lo- grade and will bo only of about fourteen candle power. The expectations are t furnish this fuel gas to the mamifacturin jilants across the river Although no options have been secured a yet by the Universal Fuel ct-mpany on an land In this city , It Is believed that th company will locatp Its plant along track ago to be furnished by the Burlington rail road.
