FINDS A ROACH IN THE STEW

rieks for Assault.
Clifford Hendricks found something in his
oyster stew at it restaurant Monday night
that looked to him like a cockroach and the
incident caused him to lose his temper , lie
felt that ho was being Imposed upon , He
called ( ho attention of the waitress to ills
find and with considerable fervor informed
the young woman that ho was no chlchen
and that ho could not be fed on bugs.
Tim waitress denied that it was a roach
and with much spirit inpugned his knowledge -
edge of entomology as well as his table
manners.
While matters were at this stage Dick
Bryan appeared upon the scene. lie lvas a
friend of the young woman and she appealed -
pealed to him to arbitrate the pending dif-
ferences.
The remains of the alleged roach were
laid in state upon the counter , where the
trio inspected them wllh scientific interest.
"That's no cockroach , " said Bryan , who
lad been a waiter himself and ought to
know ,
"Well. I say ! t Is a cockroach , " Insisted
Ifendrlcks , "and I'm not going to pay for
roaches when I order oysters. "
"Orr cooks are as clean as any cooks in
town , " retorted the waitress.
"Yes , but they are Chinamen , "
"Well , you haven't found any mice in
your stew , have you ? " interposed Bryan ,
Then Hendricks wanted to know how
Bryan got. into that gastronomic congress ,
and who had asked him to hr' ; hold an inquest -
quest on that bug. Bryan retorted , and the
men came to blows. They fought for sew-
oral minutes , then Bryan had Hendricks
arrested for assault , and lie ) s now in the
police holdover awaiting trial. Meantime
the waitress took charge of the poor little
brown Iragtnent on the restaurant counter
and has since secured the opinion of several
experts to the effect that it was not a cock-
roach.
