CHICAGO , Jan. 23.-Tlic 1'nrla advance
and the steadiness of Liverpool were tlic
main factors In the strength of a fairly

provisions were unchanged to 2',47i5c ' lower.
May wheat opened UfiUc tinder yester

Initial decline at Liverpool of "id. The ( Up

other advance. Trade \vn active. for
eigners and Inlliientlnl locals were good
buyers and professional traders covered
lines let out early. May advanced to 6ie ,
where for some time the market ruled
llrm , ' hut rather dull. Later a annum of
jiroilt-tnking depressed the price of May to
OrHQfViHc- , but a sharp recovery followed ,
BS outside markets were linn , primary re
ceipts light and clearances liberal. Tim
northwest was a good buyer at this sliiBo
of the session. May advanced to Omiur'Ao
and closed strong , % c over yesterday , at

Local receipts were 307,000 bu. , against

Corn was dull throughout the session and
Inclined to bo heavy , but the strength
of wheat had n steadying effect and near
the end Influenced enough buying to result
In a gnln over last night. Country offerings
were reported a little freer and the weather
was regarded as favorable to the move

to the bulls , although 721,000 bu. of It was
from New Orleans alone. The shipping de
mand was slow , but some business was j
transacted. Receipts here were 355 cars.
May ranged from 32c to 33Vio. closing Hl

The trade In oats was light and the tone
Rum-rally weak , but the strength of wheat
boosted the market near the close to a
level with yesterday's final figures. The
first hour was fairly active , anil , actuated
by the depression of corn , there was some
country selling. Some holdings also ciimo
out on stop-loss orders. After that the
market was quiet. Receipts here were 300
curs. May sold from 23'4c to 2.1',4c , closing
unrhanccd at 23'ic.
With receipts of hogs under the estimate
the weakness of provisions was particularly
rllsnpplntlng to the bulls. Prices at the
yards , however , were rather weak. The
market opened easy and a trlllo lower.
but steadied for a time. Later Influential
celling , principally of May pork and lard ,
caused weakness , light offerings of ribs
holding that product steady most of the
time. The close was fairly steady , a. little
over the bottom. May pork sold from
$10.92V& to $10.75fI0.77i/4. and closed SlfcfiGc

CATTL1S Receipts of cattle today were
quite large and the market as a whole was
In pretty fair shape. The most of the cat
tle cthanged 'hands ' In good sen.'on and ul
pricis thail were entirely satisfactory to the
sellers.
Something like thirty loads of fat cnttlo
were offeicKl for sale , the most of them on
the commonlsh order. Tnero were a few
good enough to bring t3.OOSij.35 , but n large
proportion of the cattle here were such as
are selling at $4.50'l.SO. The demand on
the part of local packers was coo.1 and the.
market was fairly active at jusa about
steady prices. In other words there wns no
material change In the situation as com
pared with yesterday. Some of the com-
ir.onlsh cattle were a little , slow in mov
ing , but everything- Unit was In any way
dcMnible changed hands early in Uie morn
ing.
Cows and heifers were In larger supply
than usual In this market and for that
reason the trade was not quite so ax live as
on most days. Sellers who had what buy
ers happened to want thought It a good
steady market , but on line other hand , there
were those who found it a lit.tle draggy nnj
a little lower in spo'ta. ' Steady to a llttla.
easier would perhaps best cover the situa
tion. Fat build solrt at about steady prices.
Buyers of stock bulls claimed tna.t the
market -was - a little easier for the reason
that prices have been s-o high that buyers
have been leaving thorn ulono and that the
maiket Is accordingly easier than It wus
a few days ago , , , , . , .
Stackers and feeders sold In just about
ttio same old notches. Goad kinds are In
active demand , but common stuff Is slow
every day. Buyers all seem to want well
bred stock and the demand Is principally
for the heavy cattle , such us are ready to go
feed Immediately. Representative Kules :

HOGS-Thcre wns n fair run of hogs , but
the demand was nlso good , so that there
were none too many to till all the orders.
A few of the best loads sold early at Sl.tw
and as high as $4.72 for one choice load of
fat-backs. The market , however , generally
opened about DC lower and not overly ac
tive , llnyers would take them at the de
cline noted , but sellers were slow about
making the concession. Later on reports
i from Chicago came 5SilCc lower , so that this
market grew worse rather than better and
the extreme close was very weak. A good
many of the hogs sold at Jl.571.4 today that
brought * l.ti2',4 > o.-uerday , while the hogs
that would have sold at fI.G5 yesterday had
to go at $1.60 today. There was also quite
a sprinkling of sales below Jl.r.'H. espe
cially unions the into sales. While , ns
noted above , the market was not very ac
tive , practically everything sold In season.
Rejiresuntntlve sales :
SHEEP The receipts or slieep were Targe
again today , but apparently none too largo
for the market , as everything was solnnd
weighed up at nn early hour. It will bo
understood from this that the demand was
good and the trade active. The prices paid
were lust about the same ns prevailed yes
terday. In other words Itas n good
healthy market , with no material clvuiRC
to report. Sellers were well pleased with
the prices paid , nnd comparisons with other
markets will show that this market Is well
