( Speculative llMixHlon | Sei All Devoted In Cotton nml AVlienl. NEW YORK , Jan. 22. The stock market showed continued Indifference on the part of the public and even of professional spei'- ulatois today. Net changes In prices are without any significance as bearing on the condition of business or affairs. There wtir Fonio show of strength In the local traction group which may be attributed lo 11 cov ering demand from the short Interest. Not withstanding the better feeling lepnrted In London on account of progress said to be making In the accomplishment of the Hrlt- Ish military plan of cump.ilgn. thn Ennlls i financial public showed no disposition to pay higher prices for American securities. AH soon as prices were lifted lu this mar ket selling order * for London account wuro executed In the leading International stocks. This seemed to discourage any lur- tlier operations for a rlre and prices drifted back near Saturday's closing level and oscillated very feebly from that level for tl'.e rest of the day. Whatever speculative disposition was cur rent seemed to bo diverted to the cotton and wheat markets , where there was some show of animation and considerable strength reflected from foreign market P. While the market was thus listless the undertone was firm nnd whatever buying thcro was was attributed to covering by a large outstanding short interest. Accretions of cash to the reserves of Now York banks continue on a large s-x'ule , but there was no further marked change In the rates for money today. A further drop In sterling ; exchange rates marked the con tinued relaxation in this money situation abroad as well us here. The present factors making towards greater ease In money are liable to some Interruption nt no very dis tant peilod. The money eomlntr from the Ktibtreasury I si duo In part to heavy dis bursements , for pension payments which are now about completed for the present period. The deposit of Internal revenue collectors In de-iosltory banks cannot be Indefinitely prolonged for luck of govern ment bonds as security. If the drain from the banks liwo the stibtroasury by reason of the taking up of surplus revenues la resumed the present rate of return from the Interior would be scarcely sufficient to ofreel it. This Is a rather remote contin gency at present , but It plays some part 1" tne i'hiRRlshnesa of the money market. The bond market was not so active todav as during the latter part of last week , but still overshadowed the- market for stocks. Killing cattle were not only scarce , but the quality was the worst seen here In a Rood many days , and that is sayliiR a Rood deal , as the quality of the receipts so far this month has been nothing to brai ; about. There was ono bunch of pretty decent cattle on sale , but usldo from that the offerings were decidedly on the trashy order. The demand was good on the part of local buyers , and that fact , coupled with the more encouraging reports from other sell ing points , produced a better feeling In the market , and It Is .safe to quote the market 5frlOe higher on good kinds. Common kinds were no higher. Cows and heifers were In moderate sup ply and they sold a little stronger than at the close of lust week. The prices paid for cow stuff were about on a par with Friday's market. The most of the offer ings changed hands In good season. Hulls brought steady prices. The best veal calves sold as high as $7. Stockers and feeders did not show much change as compared with the close of last week. As has been mentioned several times In the last few days , the demand appears to bo very largely for the heavy feeding cattle , and anything good answering to that description brings llrm prices. Hold ers of light yearlings , on the other hand , complain that the market Is not very active and that prlcos arc lower than they were a week or ten days ago. In other words , the market on yearlings appears to have dropped down a little , while good feeders have been going higher. Representative sales : BEEF STEERS. Huyers nit seemed to want sup plies and were out arly , so that about everything changed hands In good season. The trade could best be described as a good , steady and fairly active market.
