farmers , and for thts purpose large sums
of money were sent to him from time to time

It is further recited that the \'care Corn-

The home of Rev. P. 1I. Lindberg , pastor
of the Emanuel Lutheran church ( Swedish ) ,
was entered by a burglar Sunday night
ishllo the family was at worship and a
granlity of silverware and clothing was
stolen. Among other articles taken were
six solid silver teaspoons , a silver spoon-
holder and cream pitcher and one gold-lined
silver cream pitcher , all of which had been
presented to Rev. Lindherg by his congregu-

The burglar entered the house , 1511 North
Nineteenth street , by unlocking the front
door , probably with a skeleton key. Ho
then ransacked every drawer and trunk
ho could find , scattering the articles pro , (
Iniscuously over the floor. From the fact
that he left several pieces of silverware ,
fullyas valuable as those he carried away ,
it is supposed something happenel to alarm

"The Impression has gained ground , " said
Collector Iloutz yesterday , "that I have
made an application for an increase of salary

letter to the congressmen and senators from
Nebraska was the result of a letter received -

crease the salaries , accompanied wIth a request -
quest that I bring the letter to the atten
( ion of the representatives from Nebraska
in congress.
"I believe that the salary of time collector
of this district should be increased with the
increased work and responsibility. The
District of Nebraska includes the states of
Nebraska , North Dakota and South Dakota
and In this territory for the fiscal year end-
lag June 30 , 1898 , there was collected $2-
492,000 in round numbers at a cost of $1.80
per $100 , white do the two Iowa districts
$480,000 was collected at a cost of $ G.2.
per $100. For the fiscal year ending June 30
1899 , in the Nebraska district the sumo of
$3,428,079,35 was collected at a cost of $1.54
per $100. During the same period In Iowa
the sum of $2,003,256.26 was collected. There
are two collection districts tit Iowa , and
under the law each collector receives the
maximum salnryl $4,500 , or $9,000 for the
state , while one 'collector in the Nebraska
district collects hioro money and receives
but halt the salpry. 'fho cost of collection
in Nebraska per $100 is "less than the
general average which is $2,29 ,
"Tho maximum salary now is based upon
collections of $1,000,000 and over , while the
proposed hill fixes the maximum at $6,500
for collections of $10,000,000 and over , with
I salaries ranging from the present maximum.
The salary for the collector of Nebraska
would be $5,500 under the proposed law on
the basis of last year's collections. The
proposed change has been recenniended by
the secretary of the treasury. "
