CHICAGO , Jnn. ll.-The wheat market
was steadied today by the Liverpool nil *
vance nnd the firmness of provisions. May
closing Hftlic over yesterday. Corn closed
' 40 up and oats unchanged. Final figures
In provisions were lOftlSUc up.
Liverpool administered a snub to the lo
cal wheat market today , showing nn nd-
vunre , although there wns a loss here yes
terday. Not further to offend Its best cus
tomer , first prices In the pit here were n
shade over yesterday' * close , Mny at Smft
C7c. The market was not a broad one
und ( luctuallonu were narrow the greater
part of the time. Then. was a fair de
mand early and as offerings were not
large the market rallied to 6H"fiCSUc. On
idling against calls this was losi , May re
ceding /7H5i67-V4C. ( . The strength of pro
visions had a steadying effect. The Htrcngth
of corn was also an influence. Excepting
some activity at tin- opening the session
wns dull. There was no Improvement In
the cash demand nor In the demand for
export. Cash bids were up lie , but bus
iness which utherwlPc mleht have been
done was shut oil by n lack of cars. Shorts
covered near the end of the session , prob
ably Influenced as much as anything by
uneasiness over the South African situa
tion. May closed llrm and U54e over yes
terday at 6Sc. New York reported ten
loads taken for export.
Seaboard elcrances In wl'eat nnd Hour
were cqunl to iltilMiflO hmhels last year. Pri
mary receipts were 191,000 bushels , against
< i43floi ) bushels last year ; Minneapolis and
Dilluth reported 111 cars , compared with
310 last week and 412 a year ago. Local re-
relpin were twenty-four cars , none of
which Graded contract.
Corn was llrm and , though generally dull ,
showed a little more activity than has been
the rule recently. Support came from the
Htremith of provisions and the small coun
try offerings , which Influenced most of the
buying. The elevators reported It almost
Impossible to make purchases west at
present figures. Receipts here were 472
cars. The shipping demand was slow ; May
ranged at from 33513.1'fce to 33sc , closing lie
over yesterday at 33'iTi33-e.
Oats wns tlrm In sympathy with corn and
provisions. The speculative trade was
light , Now York being the best buyer. Ex
port bids were 'U' up , but between the rail
rates and the car s-varclty little business
was accomplished. Local receipts were 1S1
cars. May sold at from 2iT : ' 'i24c to 2K(24V < iC
closing unchanged from yesterday at 2lc.
Provisions were strong and active the
greater part of the session , prices again
touching the high murk established last
week. Interests which sold out In the hope
of a greater break joined with shorts In
buying. 1 hero was also a good outside de
mand. The strength was based on hog re
ceipts under expectations ami better prices
nt the yards and recognizance of the fact
that ilollvcrlen on January contracts are
still very small. May pork ranged nt from
$10.8714 to $ I0.97'fefi 11.00. closing 12V.c over
yesterday at $10.93 ; May lard _ at from $3.93
JV/AU neau.

positive demoralization In these active
stocks. In contrast to the. fnlrly llrm under
tone nf the general list , and especially the
railroads. The occasion of the attack on
the Industrials wns of course yesterday' . !
utterances by the president of the Ameri
can Suirnr Reflnlnc conumny.
The friends of other slocks In the In
dustrial list made strenuous efforts to dif
ferentiate their movement from that of
Sugar and marked them up briskly at I hi-
opening In face of the violent break In the
price of the stock named , but the bears met
this maneuver with selling In such volume
and with such confidence that one after an
other of the specialties crumbled In price
nnd fell through a storm of dislodged stop-
loss orders , tovtn the railroad list was af
fected at last and the e.irller trains In that
department were generally wiped out. The
only prominent railroad slock in which the
net declines reached a point were Balti
more & Ohio , Burlington. Missouri Paclllc ,
Pennsylvania and Delaware < t Hudson ,
l vckawnnnn declined 2 points.
The rally before the close reduced alt net
declines In the railroads to fraitlonal limits
and rcKlstcrcil fractional gains In noniu
cases. The course of Sugar was extremely
erratic and feverish nil day. At the low
level It was over 8 points below last night
nnd 2i ! below the low level In the Deiemoer
panic. Its net loss Is 6. All of tile New
York traction and lighting shares were
severe sufferers , Metropolitan showing an
extreme decline of 9'6 , Brooklyn Transit i !
and Third Avenue 614. The gas stocks. Man
hattan , People's ( Sas , Tobacco , Federal
Steel , Sugar preferred and Tennessee. Coal
were off from .1 to 414. The borrowing de
mand for Sugar sent It to a premium In
the loan crowd before the close. A large
preponderance of the total dealings was
made up by this group of specialties. At
no level of prices was there any activity In
railroad stocks.
The strength In foreign markets on the
reduction In the Olllclal rates of the Bank
of England nnd the Bank of France was re
flected to this market and foreign arbitrage
brokers were good buyers until prices ros
above parity. Commission houses continued
practically Idle and there was no disposi
tion to speculate In railroads. The reaction
In prices wns sympathetic. The London
buying was insutllclent In volume to cause
notable heaviness in the sterling exchange
market , where the demand for bills was
very light. The New York banks arc re
ceiving large , remittances from the Interior
as well as from the subtreasury and rates
on all classes of loans were notably easier.
The bond market was dull , but held llrm
throughout. Total sales , par value , $1,205,00. ' .
United States old 4s. coupon , declined I * , ,
the 3s , registered , % und 3s , coupon , and old
4s , registered , li In the bid price.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says : Stocks were , still
stagnant here today , but the tone was llrm.
The action of the Bank of England In re
ducing Its minimum discount rale to 5 per
cent and the sequel of the reduction of the
French rate to 4 per cent encouraged some
continental buying of tintos and Spanish 4s ,
but neither London nor lerln ! showed any
revival of speculation. Americans wej'e
neglected except for Baltimore & Ohio se
curities , which we. bought on the encourag
ing earnings statement. Indian currency
commission "earmarked" 100,000 more gold
and 94,000 was engaged for the Argentine
Republic. The bank bought 31,000 In eagles.
The tendency in the open market was to
ward higher prices for gold because of In
formation that the Indian council was ob
taining a higher rate than usual for tele
graph transfers. Indicating that the demand
for gold In India may lead to exports oC
specie thither. 'Money was still cheap at
24-i ! Per cent , but call bills in the after
noon were rather harder on the gold exports
and a further decline In exchange. Foreign
exchange rates were us follows : Paris. 23.23 ;
Berlin , 20.49. Discount deposit houses hnvu
reduced deposit rates from 1 to 3 per cent ;
calK 31i. The Bank of Bengal raised its
minimum discount rate from 7 to 8 Dcr

CATTLE The day's arrivals of cattle ,
were very small , as will be noted from the
table of recelsts above , and of the few
here ten loads were consigned direct to
packers from Kansas City and were not
offered on thle market. In addition there
were a number of loads of feeders in direct
to speculators , so that the number of cattle
actually on sale was small.
While there Is no occasion for reporting
much Improvement In the fat cattle market
today still there was undoubtedly a better
feeling to the trade , due to the fact that
there wore only ten or a dozen loads of
steers on sale. Buyers did not act as > if
they were especially hungry for the cattle
nor did they show any great disposition to
advance prices any more than absolutely
compelled to. They are evidently of the
opinion still that prices nt this point have
been too hlch as compared with other
markets. One of the buyers remarked that
It was money In their pocket ? to buy cattle
In Kansas City and ship them up here the
way cattle are selling at this point. The
most of the cattle here today were on the
commonlsh 6rder , excepting one choice
bunch which brought $3.90. Shippers must
bear In mind that cattle arc selling way
lower than they were , the decline for the
last ten days amounting to 255j40s , accord
ing to the quality of the cattle In question.
The feeling on the market for cows and
heifers was also Improved somewhat and
the market was a little more active , so that
practically everything changed bunds In
good season. The market on bulls , stags ,
etc. , was nt least steady.
Speculators had In several loads of cattle
direct from the country , and at the same
time there were a good many of the cattle
which they bought yesterday nnd day be
fore still unsold. The result was that the
market was weak and had there been any
fresh arrivals to amount to anything it Is
safe to say that they would have sold con
siderably lower. Representative sales :

and buyers were forced to raise their hands
still higher and It became a $1.4051.12 * < s mar.

best lends sold a little above that , the tot
being $1.50 for a load of good heavyweights
It will be remembered that the hogs yes-
let-day sold nt a range of $ I. . 1M. lit. with
the lom ? string nt $ l.3J s 1.35. That would
make today's market Wji.lo < - higher. Tin
market was active at the advance and tin
hogs all changed hands at an tarly hour.
It will be noted from the table ol average
prices above that the advance carried tin
market today to a point that la iBc higher
than the market of one week nto. Tin
market for the week has cnlncd about 7'4c ' ,
Pnckc rs set m to want the hogs nt present
prices and arc free buyers. In fact they
have not been getting as many as they
could use. us evidenced by the fact that
