lU-nmrKiililc .Skill of OrrN Ucn.ion ,
Di'iif , Dumb nnd Ulliid.
For fourteen years , reports the Now York
Ilctnld , Orris Hcnson hns lived In dense
,
dnrkness and absolute silence , yet ho has
developed ! a uicot clieerful disposition , moro
than ordinary capabilities for learning ; and
ai iibeoluto genius as a modeler. For seven
years ho hns been a pupil in the New York
Itistttntlon for the Instruction of tlie Deaf
and Dumb , which ho entered little- moro
than an aiiinumd organism , \\lth no sejiso
but that of touch ; yet through patient train
ing ' under the dlicctlon of Knoeh H. Carrier ,
principal , he has shown a mental growth nnd
perception , , that nro astonishing and arc at
tracting wide attention.
Orris is li > > oirs old. He Is the son ot
a carpenter ilvlug nt White Lake , Sullivan
county , this slutc. and when 2 years old
suffered from an attack of cerebro-splnal
meningitis that deprived him of sight , speech
and hearing. Ho WHS helpless , and for years
\\tis alone. In a mental darkness as great as
ho physical one that surrounded him In his
trrible sllensc. Then ho was brought to
New York and the apparently hopeless task
of developing mental faculties that were on
IIP rend to Idiocy through neglect was cu-
orcd upon.
Miss Bessie L. Nixon was assigned to In-
Ktrnct him , nnd with a kindly pressure of the
land she tried to Impress upon Ills almost ,
lormnnt consciousness the fact that she was
Ills friend , wished him well nnd would do
[ hat she could for him.
With what Interest wns watched the slow
irogrcss of kindling the flrst mental spark
in that almost Isolated mind ! His gentle
leacher communicated to him certain slmplo
Inquiries by moving her flngors , according
to the manual , within the palm of hta band.
At first the pronunciation of the words was
mechanical , and the mental effort was devoted -
voted merely to the effecting of the combina
tion of sounds. With persistent practice the
boy learned lo think out words , the vocal
organs were ? trained Into use , and then enun
ciation came , uncertain nt llrst , but after
ward with sumcieut clearness to be under
stood.
After the first certain mental communica
tion was established between teacher nnd
pupil the task become really fascinating.
Every mouth the mental growth was such
that the teacher found In the blind deaf boy
remarkable powers of Intellect , and soon ho
bccamo the shining light of the Institution.
So it has gone from that day until this ,
with remarkable' progress at over step.
Orris Benson has become an expert mod
eler In clay , nnd the most clever thing he
lias done is Grant's tomb in miniature. Ills
eyes have not seen the tomb , and he has not
more than touched Its massive columns ; but
his has faithfully copied It , even to the de
tails of ornamentation.
How ? He hns not even heard a descrip
tion of It , but he has seen It through the
eyes cf one of his deaf fellows , and has been
told by fingers as clover as his how the
beautiful ( structure looks and how the vari
ous details of Its architecture are arranged.
This information , carried through the lin
gers and palm , formed a definitennd mainly
correct inuiital picture , which the sightless
boy hns reproduced In plastic clay , showing
wonderful artistic perception and mechani
cal skill.
This Is really a wonderful thing when wo
consider that the boy knows absolutely noth
ing of the appearance of buildings either In
general effect or proportion , excepting uch
Information as Is conveyed to him through
the sense of touch. He hns no memory of
alght before ho was blind , as his mind was
practically a blank when hl education was
begun Kovcn years ago.
The tomb Is the last of the boy's works
In clay , the llrst being n rather rudely ex
ecuted key , the forming of which gave him
Intense delight. It has been the same with
I his other models. The creation of them has
< given the modeler great pleasure as ho has
felt them grow into shape under his fingere.
To his other accomplishments ho has
added the typewriter , on which ho Is a most
rapid and correct operator , seldom jnaltlnit
a mistake. Ho Is quite proud of. thin accom
plishment. His hours at work arc given
principally to caning chnlrs , at which ho Is'
nn expert and at which ho will probably earn
his living when he Is graduated.

"There was a striking resemblance be
tween the lute Mr. Moody , nnd President
Garflold , " says the Now Orleans Democrat ,
"fiarlleld wna the taller of the two , but
otherwise they were HtraiiKcly alike. They
had the tame massive frame , the same'
auave , smiling cast of features , the nmo on-
thuslastlf tcmpeinmcnt , the same facility
for anecdote , and the same effect of sin-1
cerlty In everything that they said or did.
Their tylo of oratory wan almost Identical
and both possessed the gift of captivating
people at first sight. Ono of Mr. Moody's
most ardent admirers , for Instance , wre A-
C. Wheeler , the well known Now York
dramatic critic , who writes under the notn

ship sprung up between thorn , lusting un-
cook'd to the end. I Interviewed Mr. Moody
several times , " continued the speaker , "on
the ludt occasion about three years ago , and
I nuked him unions olhcr things , what
preparation , If any , ho made for hl looser
public addresses. 'Why. I Jot down a memo

with one of his characteristic , boyish laughs.
Thnn ho explained that ho mapped out his
general line of argument In advance , think-

to clinch each twccosslvo point. That won
all done menially , and the only notes ho
mudo were a few cutch words on a card to
remind him of the stnrlw Jn case any of
them should slip his mind. Ho showed mo
