.Mnrkoi ! Decline * , i
NEW YORK' , Jan. 9.-The stock market |
wns practically Inert during the early part ,
, of the session today , the buying demand'
i falling lo scarcely appreciable proportions.
The bear traders watched this Inviting
'Held with longing eyes until the attraction
I became lee strong for them and they put
' out selling orders throned the greater part
of the list. They succeeded In effecting
very marked declines and bringing out a
certain amount of offerings by tin-covering
stoploss orders. 'Hut the volume of the
selling wns not Important nnd the success ot i
the bears was due to the listless attitude of I
the public toward stocks and the Indispo
sition of insider * to support prices. There
wns no positive Incident In the day's events
for the bears to base their operations on.
Their conclusion was rather a negative one.
us to the chances of any favorable c-h.inge
from the present depressing Inlluences.
For the present It Is obvious that capital ,
bus no Inclination to move Into stocks and It
Is noticeable that the quiet Investment ab
sorption , whlih was a feature of the market
during the last week In December and
which continued Into the tlrst week In Jim-
iiury , has to nil Intents and purposes ceased
nt the present level of prices. A series of
encouraging events bus afforded a pretty
good teat of speculative sentiment by being
totally Ignored. There have been new en
tries to the list of dividend-paying stocks >
nnd Increases In the dividend rate of estab- j
llshed dividend payers. !
The money situation has ceased to cause
anxiety , owing to the return Mow from do
mestic centers and' ' the cessation 01 the
drain on the subtreasury. iMoney markets
abroul have come through the crisis of the
yearly settlements and are steadily working
toward ease , so that the drawing of gold
from New York Is now believed to have
ceased , at least for the thnc being. Fur-
reuchtiiK accomplishments toward harmon
izing great railroad systems have been an
nounced und disastrous trade wars have
been patched up according to all appear
ances. The small effect produced by all
these Important developments Is cited by
the bear element ns Indicating small hopes
for any advance tn prices.
There wns a small opening advance In
stocks in opposition to the heaviness In
London and In sympathy with strength in ,
Sugar and1 Hrooklyn Transit. The almost i
entlro disappearance of buying demand , In
spite of very llttlo offerings , then allowed
prices to gradually satr until the active wrll-
itiB movement of the last two hours , which
forced prices easily and rapidly downward.
There were a few feeble rallies , milllclcnt
to cause some Irregularity , lint the tone In
the main continued -weak until the close.
The dividends In Louisville and Federal
Steel common were not announced until
near the close , but the bears counted upon
their exercislnsan unfavorable effect us
not being up to expectations. The possi
bility of further reverses to Great Hrltaln
In South Africa and rumors of foreign com
plications Involving further embarrassments
for Great Hrltaln were used with effect.
The bond market wns dull and heavy in
sympathy with stocks. Total sales , par
value. $1,253,000. United States old 4s , reg
istered , und old 5s. coupon , declined Vi und
the 3s , coupon , new 4s , old 4s , coupon und

Thp. Commercial Advertiser's London
llnanclal cablegram says : The markets
here were stasnnnt but Ilrm today , await
ing news nnd the settlement , although there
Is no great apprehension over the latter , as
It Is known that the weak men In the lust
settlement have now been strengthened.
Herlln was Inclined to nibble at specialties
other than American shares. Paris bought
a few copper shares and Spanish 4s. Amer
icans movedi within the narrowest limits ,
London being apathetic In regard to them as
well as Herlln. Union Pacltic was weak on
New York sales , which London regarded ns
an Indication that there will be no dividend
on the common stock. Contungocs wore 1
to 3 points lower than the rate at the last
settlement. The 'Scotch railway carryover
on provincial exchanges wns also much
easier , forecasting low rates tomorrow.
Money was abundant at 2'/4 per cent. The
bank received .CGG.OOO cold from Germany
nnd 'bought 42,000 In German coin. For
Indian currency account JC30.000 was -with
drawn. Paris cheque on London was 2o.22' : : ;

CATTLE There was a larger run of cat
tle hero today than for some days , and at
the same limp Chicago was sending out
nnfu voluble reports , u combination of cir
cumstances that was against the sellers.
Unyers started out to pound prices , and
th"Ir bids were anywhere from 10fi20c
lower. Sellers were slow to make the con
cession , and the market was a drag from
start to llnlsh. In the end buyers pot the
e.itllo at u decline of about lOc on the
general run of stuff.
The cow market was also slow and lower ,
largely for the reason that there were a
Rood many more on sale than usual of hue.
As a general thins buyers were willing to
admit that they bought their cow stuff 10c
lower than yesterday , the decline extending
to practically all kinds. As a matter of.
course there were Instances where sellers
may have had something that just stilted
In which the full force of the decline was
not felt. The most of the bulls here were
fat and went to the packers at prices that
were usually about lOc lower. There was
not much change in the market for good
voul calves.
Stockers and feeders were In very light
supply , and for that reason the market was
not much changed , though It was a little
easier than yesterday. Had there been any
great number In tlrst hands the feeling
was that the market would have been
lower , as speculators had a good many
cattle on hand , and the unfavorable
weather .seemed to have kept country buy
ers at home. Representative sales :

SHEEP There were more sheep here
than on many days of late. Besides that
Chicago reported all but the best lower.
Huycrs at this point seemed to feel that
they had been paying pretty stiff prices
as compared with other market points , and
ncoordliiRly when they had the chance they
took off 10il5c on sheep as a general thliiR.
Some of the .sales did not look much lower ,
but the ( jeneral market was as Indicated
above.
On the other hand , lambs were scarce , and
at the same tlmo In peed demand , so that
they sold fully as well as yesterday.

"Ye , I had a good many queer experi
ences whllo I was In the south , " snld the
woman who had traveled. "The queerest
of them was my meeting with nn old colored
woman In a little Virginia'town. It was
.Monday afternoon nnd I was prowling about
the outskirts of the place In search of n
washerwoman. Suddenly , as I ncnred a
cnhln which stood a llttlo way hick from
the road , 1 heard sounds which Indicated
extreme despair. The cabin Itself was what
southerners call n "straight up'n down bon'd
nhnnty' and the chimney wan of mud , whllo
the broken window panes wcro reinforced
by old hats nnd multi-colored rags , which
served to keep out wind and rain. The ap
pearance of the whole place wan so mean
and wretched that I stopped , womlorlng If
some great calamity had just befallen Its In
mates and If I could be of servlio to thorn.
Whllo I still hesitated the door opened and
n stout old colore.l woman c.11110 out. She
had an nlr ot Importance nnd eho carried n
dingy tin pall , being evidently on her way
to the spring.
"Tho opening of the door not only brought
the sounds of grief more plainly to my cars ,
but It also gave mo a glimpse of nn In
terior crowded with colored people of all
ages , all wearing that same nlr of solemn
Importance. By this tlmo my curlcelty had
quite got the better of ma nnd I said : 'Rood
afternoon , aunties. Is anything wrong In
the house ? ' 'Yessum , 'deed doy Is ; dcy
nho'ly Is , ' she said as aho sat down the pall
and put her hands on her hips. 'Dat'fi Slst *

"Is that go ? I am very sorry for the poor
woman , ' I said , ashamed of my curiosity.
"Yessum , dat's so. Ho was er mighty

" 'Oh , I see. She Is inournln * him now , Is

" 'Well , honey , y * see bit's dlsaway : Mose ,

"And , shaking her head , she took up her
pall and vanished around the corner of the
bouse , leaving mo speechless. "

Detroit Journal : The butler lobby were
