The warm weather Is gr. , , 'iy ' interfering with the movement of i Kinds of winter weight clothing nnd < WITH report trade In those lines very i cM Retailers out through the country on. . , ny that the demand for Winter goods of the year and ia light for this season i .iwinontly they arc not sending in tno orders. The ti i l number of dupllcnto timp when spring business will be the most tmfTtanl factor Is fast approaching , how- and retailers are both rvr. nnd Jobbers i ' .nil-lent that then they will have plenty to. . . . Many local Jobbers say they never of advance orders for bad a better line spring goods at this time of year "lid for M.oi reason are looking for n nice run of b.slnnsTho markets were iimiMmlly week almost no changes of lin- tpii < ly last , porlnnro being reported. The tendency on Iinirueally nil Hues , howrver , s upward rather than downward and predictions are being freely made that higher prices will rile In this near future. Local retailers f.ilind trade rather quiet last week In com- IMirlHnn to the rush of the holidays , but lit the name tlmo there was a very fair ilc- innnd for this lime of tlio year nnd no fumilnlnta wore beard. ( iooil CSrooory Doiiiniiil. Wholosaln grocers report the new year ac starting out In very good shape. Ono jobber said bo bad to work his men two idgbts last week to keep from running behind , which Is something rather unusual at this time of the year. It seems that retailers' stocks arc pretty well broken up bv the Christmas trado. us the orders mtnliiK In nt the present tlmo are for practically every line that grocers carry. The market Is very firm all along tlio Hue and sevr-nil classes of goods have ad vanced since the Ilrst of Ihc year. Sugar | q a little higher than It was a week ago the advance being quoted at f.f/20c / per 100 pounds , according to the grade. Roans have again advanced , the amount this tlnu- being lee per bushel. There Is no ehnngo to report In either canned goods or dried fruits , although the markets are very firm ntnl Indications are thought to bo favor able for higher prices. The coffee market Is still advancing and Is on the average about 14c higher , than It was three weeks ago. Some llne.s have not gone up that much , but other grades have advanced fully 4 > There is no change In leas , though the market Is very strong and higher prices nrn being looked for , especially on the new crop. Quite n number of articles In the woodenwnre line have been advanced recently. Slnrtliiir ( lie Your Hardware Jobbers say they have also made a good beginning , as trade with them was unusually heavy for the first week of the year. There seems t be no reason for retailers ordering moro slock at this time , except that their trade demands It , no Die conclusion Is that retailers are doing a nice business. Every one. Is predicting a prosperous season , as there Is apparently no reason why trade should not bo good. There Is plenty of money In the country for making improvements , which of ne cessity will create a demand for hardware. Then , too , the market Is In such a healthy condition that retailers do not hcsltnta about buying liberally. Jobbers , then , are full of confidence for the future and say they would not bo surprised If even last year's record wire broken. l.oolc for n Iloinanil. The demand for dry goods last week wan not very heavy. Orders , of course , are coming In all the time , especially for some lines that were depleted by the Christmas trade , but at the same time the number of duplicate orders received Is hardly as largo as it should be. The warm weather Is the only excuse given. Spring goods , however , are selling rapidly and an Immense - monso demand In looked for Inter In thn season. Jobbers are already getting their spring lines In shape , ready for Inspection , and a large assortment Is promised. There were no very Important changes In the market last week , although there was the pnmo stiffening process which has been going on for many months past. Liberal OrilcrM for SIOCM. Root and shoo men are also doing a little complaining about what they call the unseasonable wcalhnr. Rubbers and arc tics , they say , are not In demand at all and heavy shoos are oven superfluous. As long as the ground remains dry and the weather warm the people will not Invest much money In footwear , but will get 1 along with what they happen to have. For * . that reason very few duplicate orders are being received anil none are expected until tlio weather changes. Spring business , however , In In good shape and traveling men are landing moro orders every day , so no complaining Is heard on that score. Collections are In good shapn nnd prospects for future business favorable. Immediate business being- the only thing lacking. The hldo mrket Is about ' 40 lower than H was a week ago. Receipts are qulto lib eral , with indications favorable for Ihelr remaining BO. 1'rnK mill 1'rniliioi * . Fruit and produoo men had another quiet time la.st week. The city trade was light and the snino may be said of the shipping demand. It Is thought , however , that this Is merely a temporary condition nnd n marked Improvement Is looked for In the A near future. The egg market Is hardly as firm ns It was a week ago , owing partly to Increased receipts. Poultry , on the other bund , Is firm and the demand fairly good. ItecolptH la.st week were only mod- onto , so the market wiu in good shape. Live turkeys , however , were not In very Rood demand. Rntter IH just nbout the same us it was a week ago. There Is very little of Interest to bo salil i bout the trade In fruits and vegetables Prices nro practically the same a.i they were at last report and the demand none < oo gcod. A few fresh vegetables arc now on the market and sell quito freely. New beets nro quoted at 75c per doz.'n bunches lettuce and radishes at lOo per dozen bunches. Thro Isilso some fancy heail lettuce on the market , which is quoted at $5 per barrel. Reports from tlio east develop a scarcity In oysters , owing to a cold simp which has frozen up the mouths of the creeks h nnd small rivers , whom many of the oy. slers nro obtained. The stock market suffered today from continuation of the liquidation for Rerlln account. The volume of this selling In New York was not formid able , but the sentimental effect of It was decisive In driving prices downward throughout the list and discouraging buying of slocks. Tlio further sharp decline In In terest rates In Herlln and London pre cluded the explanation of money stilngonc-y to account for the selling , and made It ap pear that Its motive was * political. Tni' friction between Germany and Great Rrlt- aln over .seizures of German mail steamer. ; was not alone as an explanation fur the reported movements of Russian troops to ward the frontiers of Afghanistan , arous ing the apprehension of further embarrass ments for Great llrltaln. A leading au thority on thu sterling exchange market recorded his opinion that ns long as thu Transvaal war continued gold would con tinue to go out from New York. The Hoard of Trade's ' returns of Great Rrltaln's for eign trade for December , showing a de crease of over $2,1.000,000 In Impotts and an Increase of $3,300,000 In exports , taken In connection with the heavy rolling of se curities In New York for London account , go to explain London's continued control over the International exchange and abil ity to draw cold at will. The lightness ol the outward movement of cotton from this country also keeps up the rate of Btcrllnti exchange. While the polling for foreign account was being executed there was no disposition t < i keep prices above the London parity anil pressure against some leading industrial ! ! , especially Sugar , was added.VIh : the ces sation of the London selling and the ap pearance of the bank statement there was an Improvement In sentiment. The market partly recovered and the closing was firm nnd even on a good volume of business. The fact that the surplus was maintained and even slightly increased In face of the gold ox'port movement and a loan expansion of $1,11)7,100 afforded much encouragement over the domestic money situation. The stock market moved In an Irregular mannei all week and the motives of the operatlonn have not been by any means clear. The confusion Is largely due to the fact that profeHdon.il operators were olorfng up con tracts to wMch they had committed them- selves. In expectation of the week's events , Such a movement naturally tends to nul lify the imbU'iieo of the in tuul event when it occurs. Thus , one of the rules In Stock exchange speculation Is io buy In antici pation of the early January demand caused by released dividends nnd Interest money Keeking Investment. Last week's strensfi In stocks was due very largely to this an- t'clpatory buying , and the corollary of this buying would bo selling to take profits tht ! week , when the dividend money began tc bo disbursed. Hut while one M't of profcs sionul speculators Is seeking to profit by the buying of what Wall street regards at thu outside public , there Is always anothci set aiming to make prollt out of the ttrt > l net themselves. Tills week's events prove that very heavy lines of short contracts were put out lasi week on the theory that the anticipatory demand for stocks would prove to have outrun thu real demand this week and the attempts to realize would break the markol and offer opportunity 10 cover at a profit This clement hud on their sldo the nrgU' ment thai the recovery of pilcos from tin Kvel of Hie Deci niber panic had already outrun tin- usual rrb > unJ after ru h din lurlj.tr > > ia und that u ILU iui > was Jut n-.iu * tn . sril up of st''k boncht in the p.m ! < - The uhort srlli-r- " argued , il o that the jnrm- > market would nut h.i\\ immediate relief after January I and that ilie return of disbursements to the market would be retarded. Such speculative committments must be taken Into account to explntn the apparent contradiction ? In price movement * on new developments. Tne event proved that the shorts miscalculated the extent of the new Investment demand and the relief already afforded to the money market by- last month's drastic llipildatlon.'i. Their operations were mostly In the mercurial Industrial specialties , notably Sujar , nnd the demand to cover shorts has caufXHl rome excited advances and feverish tlnc- tuntlons this week In that department of the list. In the rnllrond list for the most Dart changes were small , though business was active nnd well distributed. There wan con siderable selling to take profits by last week's professional buyers and there was a steady stream of liquidation for foreign ac count until the latter part of the week. This was attributed to Berlin account and was not fully explained. The Herlln money quotations did not show a condition of stringency sulllclent to force large liquidation nnd alarming rumors of political complications between Great Britain and Germany were deprecated at otllclnl sources , but the home demand for securities prove. ! sulllclent to absorb offerings and sustain the level of prices. The trunk Hue group was notably strong. led by New York Central. Speculative sentiment Is not very clearly formulated ns to the pro. ppvt for values' . Investment considerations rule for the most part and buying orders of this character comp In on any reaction nnd serve ns a sup port. On any considerable advance In prices they show a falling off. The high prices ruling ihroiighout the Industrial and commercial World cause some questioning In Wall street , where the recent sharp les son from the consequence of nrlce Inflation has been taken to heart. The growth of the proportion of operating expenses of rail roads by reason of high-priced material In the monthly returns published Is Impres sive. The effects' to ensue from the ad vances In railroad rates now going Into force on the \olumo of railroad trnlllc will be keenly studied In the light of complaints by shipping Interests. The well filled order books In the departments of Industry give i fresh confidence In the continuation of j prosperous conditions , but the future dem onstration of the possibility of profitable i consumption of high-priced products Is awaited ns an Index of the duration of the period of prosperity. < The bond market has been less active than , stocky , the level of prices on present re turns offering fewer attractions than In 1 stocks. UnlUd States 3s , old 4s , new Is ami ; 5s advanced * In the bid price. The Commercial Advertiser's London financial cablegram says : There was heavy renewal today of the. Herlln liquidation ac companied by political rumors In connec tion with the seizure of < 5ofman vessels bound for Dolagoa bay and the Russian movement of troops In Afghanistan. Noth ing authentic was given out. Americans sufferi d most. The London market was dead , simply allowing foreign sales to depress prices. The Bank of England bought 150,000 gold In eagle. " anil Cll.OOO In Germ in coin. Money was superabundant and bills were Idle. The Hoard of Trade returns - turns for December show Imports down 10.2 , but an Increase for the year of 3.1. Exports - ports for the month are up 2 and for the vear Increased 9.4 , the latter figure exclud- tug shipbuilding. Not a slnglo load of steers was reported on the market and only live loads of cows and heifers. There were a few ( Ids and ends of feeders and four loads direct to packers , whlcli were not offered for sale. The few cattle on sale Bold In about yesterday's notches and the market was without change of Im- jiortance. Thu best cornfed steers have sold at about steady prices this week , and the demand has been good and the market as a rule active on that kind. The offerings of really desirable cattle have been light , and only one bunch was received during the week good enough to bring $0.00. On the other hand , the market on the common to me dium kinds has been slow and the tendency has been lower , the los for the week on that kind amounting to 10fil5c , some would say 10'520c. Shippers must bear In mind that common and half fat cattle sell very uneven , that Is , when ouyers just happen to have use for a few they will pay pretty good prices , and again , cattle of the same kind will not bring nearly as much just because no one happens to have a place for them. Cows and heifers declined considerably during the last few days , and for the week It Is safe to quote the market 155J23c lower. Even good heifers sold lower , but as a matter of course the decline was the heavi est on the less desirable stuff. Canners have declined 23T40e on account of a change In the manner of selling. It has been cus tomary to sell the most of the common canners at this point subject to Inspection by the government oflleers at the packing houses. In case the carcass was condemned the shipper lout It. t'nder the new rule the stuff Is sold on Its merits for what it Is supposed to be worth , and If the govern ment condemns It the buyer Is the loser. Stockers nnd feeders have been In active demand all the week , and as the supply has been small the market has gradually firmed up and at the close of the week It is as high as H over was , or higher. The country has seemed to want feeders re gardless of price nnd have paid extremely high prices. Representative sales : COWS. No. Av. Pr. No. Av.
