Provisions ut the close were n irltlo up In May pork anil ribs and lOc bet ter In Inrd. At the beginning of the session wheat derived a tone of stouOlness from the fact that LIveriKiol was but little depressed In the face of the declltio ofMe here yester day. Domestic receipts , too , were conspicu ously light. The market was very dull , dealers exerting themselves only enough to cvfii up In preparation for the holidays. May opined He over yesterday al G9i Ti Ki'tnc , The Price Current i stimuliof an pximrtnblo surplus for January 1 of 120.000- wiO bu. caused nome looosenlng , May drop ping to 63'ii- ' . Until the receipt of the news Hint Ihet British government had chartered M-vcral ocean gre > houn ls for transport purpose * trnde was light and lluetuatlons rather narrow. Tills Information , despite the fact thai II had been known thai Eng land would have lo Mho some such me.is- tire to transport her volunteers , seemed to strike ; shorts as an Indication of the t-crlouH condition of things and they proceeded to cover. May advanced to 70JiiO'c ' ( , but cased off on selling against rails , May closing V : up nt E9l4'i'G9 ' ; c. Seaboard clearance-s In wheat and llour were equal to : ! 30 , < ! 00 bu. Provisions wcro firmer than they have been recently , steadied early by better prices at the j-ards and a good shipping elc- mund towards the end by the. advance In wheat , which caused some covering by shorts- . The market was fairly active most i/f the time. Initial prices wen ; at small gains from yesterday's close , but. . later the market declined on selling of pork by one large establishment. MOVUMUNTM OF STOCKS AMI IIONDS. , TrailP < m n Smnll Sculplth C < in- Mmit I'MiiotiintloiiM. NEW YORK , Dec. 21.-The stock market had to carry another lu-nvy lonl : of liquida tion today. Trading was on a smaller 8falo than on , any previous day this week , but the tone was fevorl ? ) ! ntul unspttlpil throuRhout and fluctuations were constant. The prlnclMl | sealing pressure < ame from Ixindon , where the monpy dllllcultyas aggravated by rencwwl approhcnslon over the ptifoly of the British columns In South Africa and the advance In the olllctnl dis count rate of the Bank of France. .Much Importance seemed to be attached to the latter's action as an obstacle to the acquire ment of gold by the Bank of England. London's pressure upon Paris was retlccted In a Jump of 4 orntlmcs In the sterling cx- ohniiRe rate at Paris. Forcfd liquidation on the London ex change was on a large scale and over flowed to the New York market. The Inter nationally ll. tc l stocks were acutely de pressed at the opening nnd were not able to make substantial headway all ilay. In the last hour there was renewed soiling of this ' group , which forced down prices all through the railroad list from 1'A to . * > points , tno extreme decline bting In Northwestern. The leading specialties were also at the low point of the day In the last hour. The , bears were active In the late drive and clr- , culated stories of a panic In Ixtndon on ac count of n fresh disaster to the British arms In South Africa. Buying to cover short contracts caused some sharp rallies , 1nit .they . were not well held , and the elo- > was extremely unsettled nl extreme loss"s compared with last night's close. A nota ble feature of the weakness , as was tl.o rape yesterday , was the easy rate ruling ut the time for call money. After lending u' 7 per cent In the. morning loans were being made at from 5 to 3 Per cent at the tlmo when prices were dropping most rapidly. The weakness was not so much conllned to the speculative Industrials as was the case ycste..ay , nnd If liquidation was being forced iby U'.svrlmlnatlon as to collaterals , the standard railroad stocks were thrown over to obtain funds for 'the protection of holdings of Industrials. 'Prices ' In a num ber of Important stocks approached or fell below the low point of Monday and this fact seemed to Incline holders to renewed selling. Brooklyn Transit was by no means so conspicuous as yesterday , but the dcal- Irgs werft very large and the lluctuntloiu very wide. It was vigorously supported in the early dealings , but apparently only for the purpose of making a market for fur ther liquidation. Support was forthcoming from time to time during the day , v.'hlch checked the downward tendency. Sugar was very erratic at a level below last night and fell to wlihln Vi ot Monday's low level. There was nothing choice or very good among the j offerings , so thai sales do nol show up very well on paper. Yesterday the cow market was very dull I and weak , ns noted at the time , but today ' there was n decided improvement In the ! feeling. Buyers seemed to want a few cows and heifers today and they were out t' early , and It did not take them long to clear the yards. The prices paid were ! steady to a little strong. Stockers and feeders were in good de mand at llrm prices. If anything , light | catlle , which have been rather slow sale all i the week , seemed to be in better demand today and they moved a llltlo more freely. As noted yesterday , llcshy feeders arc In the besl demand and Iho market on thai kind Is very high. Shippers must bear In mind that all Hie big slock markets will take a holiday on Monday. If anything Is received It will be yarded , but there will bo no market. Rep resentative sales : BEEF STEERS No. Av Pr. No. Av. Repre sentative sales : SHEEP Only a few sheep were In the pens this morning , and as buyers seemed to have use for a few the market was in good shape and the' nrlces paid were steady to strong. Shippers must understand that the feeling at this point Is that present prices are only maintained by the very light run , and that with anything like liberal receipts at any of the market points there would bo n decided break In prices. In other words , operators on the market do not expect much of any demand until after the holidays are over with and the poultry markets cleaned up. There will be no market here on Monday.
