TS OP STOCKS AM ) IIOXHS. Experiences Vlolrnl Vli'l Nl- ttiilrs. CloNlna l ! i PPW I.II-OIPM , NEW YORK. Deo. 11.-A perusal of the ! net changes In prices of stocks ns a result 1 of the. day's trading will glvo but a faint cnncontlon of the violent vicissitudes through which the market passed during the live hours' pesslon. During the morn- Ihg hours the drastic liquidation which w-as forced Upon the market caused great I naps In the v.iltie of securities and the market took on nn appearance of demorn- ' llziitlon. Thu wide variations In prices be tween sales , running as high u 3 points , were evidence of the urgent character of ! the felling. At the low point the scale of prices presented n decidedly tagged np- piMrance , the declines In the long list of specialties ranging , as compared with Sat urday's close , all the way from 3 to 21 i points , the latter In Tennessee Coal. Notwithstanding the day's violent llnctua-1 1 lions the market clofcd with few net Io5o.i ! exceeding 2 points. The liquidation seemed to have been very thorough and the great Improvement in the tone ot the market dur- 1 ing the latter part of the day reflected the I benefit to the health of the speculative situation. The Influences at wor were so broad and well defined that they are soon stated. One leading cause of the weakness \\ua the large decline made last week , which wiped out or nearly exhausted m.n- plns on speculative account , nnd the callIng - Ing for additional margnlns forced largo blocks on the market. .Many were forced to liquidate and there was n large con tingent whose hopes of an upward turn In rvlces had become exhausted and who threw over their holdings In disgust , de termined to wait a more favorable op portunity. The news of the heavy reverse to the British arms In South Africa helped to un settle this market. London bought stocks ' hero In the llrst hour , but this was simply to cover sales made earlier In I/ondofi nt , a better figure. The very violence of the , i selling movement worked Its own remedy and the day was not half over when ev- I I deuces began to appear that urgent specula- , live accounts had been thoiouirhly shaken I 1 I out and the loan contraction pushed to a mtlllcicnt extent to afford material relief. The bears were steady buyers for the rest of the day nnd there was n sulliclent con tingent of bargain hunters on hand to afford assistance toward the recovery In I prices. The character of the Interests which wre most acutely distressed was shown by con spicuous weakness In the highly speculative industrials. Besides the ( 'efllneg ' ot 21 points In Tennessee Coal there were losses of 4 to 7 points In members of the metal group , Sugar , Tobacco and New York specialties. The net loss of Tennessee Coal and Iron for the day was 13 points. In the railroads only a few cases occurred where declines reached over 2 points , New York Central , Pennsylvania , n nun.ber of the conerp , Louisville nnd Southern Pacific being con spicuous examples. Kansas & Texas was down nearly I points. The vigorous and determined support In Sugar \VIIM iiiu luinnih point in i.- . . . . . . o market. This specialty was run up In ihe. late dealings 7- % points above the low point , scoring a full recovery not only of iho early decline , but of thu quarterly divi dend , which was deducted trom the iirlco today. There was a subsequent decline of li points and the stock closed 114 higher than Saturday. The general list close.1 for the most part llrm nt the recovery. Except i r my ipiii'i allurocd oy inu cay s llqit.ila- tion the Hens of lightness Jn the money markets of the. world were unabated. The weakness In bon&i was much less general and acute than In stocks. Total sales , par value , Jl.SOO.COO. United States old 4s nnd 5s advanced > 4 In the bid price. The Commercial Advertiser's London financial cablegram says : The markets hero were upsei by the atormt-erg disaster and the money scare. There were , how- ievcr , very few good cattle of any kind.1 Only a few loads of cornfed cattle were on sale , nnd while right good cattle would undoubtedly have sold at steady prices had 1 there been any such , the tenucncy of the market wap easier on the kind here , though In some cases sellers thought they got steady prices. To cause for any weakness that may have existed may be easily understood when It Is taken Into considera tion that Chicago reported the market there as generally lOc lower. Shippers will under stand that the market on warmed-up or half-fat steers Is gradually weakening. The best drereed beef cows and heifers were about steady. Some decent heifers sold at $4.10. Of course the market on common and old pot-bellied cows was weak and the tendency lower , but then they sold mean all last week , so that is nothing especially new. The market on stockers and feeders was without change from what It was the latter part of last week. There were only a few on sale , but at the same time the demand was not very brisk , so that the supply was fully' up to the requirements as regards numbenf. Holders of little stockers found It very slow work unloading and the market on that kind of cattle was very slow and drag-ffy. The weather having turned colder may have had something to do with the light demand. Representative sales : STEERS. IIOQS Chicago reported the hog market a shad"- " lower , but that did not appear to make any difference at this point. The receipts here were light and the buyers appeared to want the hogs , with the icsult that the market was steady to a sbndo higher. The hogs sold largely at ? 3.no0 3 , ! > 2Vj. while on Saturday three-quarters of the hogs sold at W.PO and tinder. One choice load of butcher weights brought Jl.OX A glance at the table of average prices will show that the hogs as a whole sold 2c higher than on Saturday. The prices paid were just about steady with the close of last week on both sheep and lambs that would do for the killers. Feeding stock was slow , as has been the care for some little time back. Havmond met In the cafe of the Russell house In Detroit. " said a palmy-day actor tea a Washington Star mnn. "They were both playing enrjngements In the Oily of Straits. On the night before both men had sat Up pretty late rather , early with a party of convlvlals ind neither of them felt par ticularly hilarious when , shortly alter turn ing out of bed , they happened to line Up lo- Kcthcr In the Russell house cafe. They looked each other over sheepishly , without saying much , until after they had In serted Into themselves the- preparations concocted for them by the man behind the bar. Then Raymond thrust his hnnils Into his trousers pockets , took a stand directly In front of Florence , with his legs spread out , and examined the famous J. Ilardwell Slote critically. " 'William , ' he eald solemnly , to Florence , 'last night 1 observed with solicitude , not t.nmlxcdwith rorrow , that your well-known addiction to the bowl Is growing fast upon you. Ro warned in time , my good fellow ! Think of the ruined Intellect , the suattnrsd health , the cr desolate home ' " 'Oh , go to the dickens. ' said Florence. " 'Ha ! ' went on Raymond , with a ludicrous assumption of solemnity , 'It Is thus that all slaves of the grape , or soon-to-be slaves of the crape , thrust aside the ndluratlcns of those who have their welfare close nt heart. William , be cautioned In time. Put away from you , once and forever , this awful habit that Is ' " 'Why , confound your Impudence , Hay- Mend , ' burst out Florence , whose head was ( t > f such proportions , owing to the previous nfght off , that he couldn't quite pcrcolvo vhether the genial Colonel Sellers was Je-\.1iiK ' or not , 'If you didn't take two to my one- last night , and show 'cm , too , I'll never see the footlights again. ' " 'Hut I , ' said Raymond , pointing to him self with nn air of Insufferable egotism , 'I can use It or lot It alone. It's all one to me whether or not I ever again Inhale the bouquet of the grape. Whereas you you , my poor friend ' "And Raymond pulled out his handker chief and pretended to wipe away a tear from the corner of each eyo. Florence's eyes twinkled. " 'Look here , Raymond , ' he said , 'It's now October the 13th , Isn't It ? All right. I'll just tell you what I'll do with you. Aftr wo have one more nerve restorer in this place , I'll bet you the best suit of clothes that can ho made in New York for money that I won't take another drink until Christ mas eve that Is. on condition that you make the same hot. It'll be a case of honor bright , of course. I'm going east , and you're going west. The man that takes the first drink Is to immediately notify the othsr' by wire. ' " 'William , you're on , " Bald Raymond. He hadn't intended to have his little. Joke taken that way , but he was game and he stood for the bet. As n matter of fact , neither Flor ence nor Raymond was addicted to tho' habit of oxccEelve drinking. They were simply men of liberal habits men of th stamp who took a drink when they 'wanted It. So they took a final bracer In the Rus sell house cafe that afternoon and wen ! forth , both resolved to be good until Christ mas eve. "Now. In truth , both of them found thn bet to bo n pretty irksome affair befora they wore as much as a week older. They naturally fell into congenial company a good deal , where they were expected to glvo evidence cf the nimble wit which they both possessed In such high degree In prlv- atn llfo and they both afterward admitted that with trn tcetrtaler bet hanging over them they often felt llko death's heads at the feast , what with the popping cf Ihn corkn pll around p > nd they clinging virtu ously and resolutely to vlchy nnd milk. But they etuck to the terms cf the bet with dogged determination for weeks. "On the night of December 2 , more than six weeks after the hot had been marie. Fl-renco was taken In tow after the nlijht perfoicnanco by a party of well-known , hlph-clasn New York men , that Included such bright souls as Larry Jerome , William Travers , Charles Osbornc and other wits of national reputation. The party repaired to the Hoffman hoiiso apartments of one of then : . The magnums began to appear by the case and there eden commenced aq ox- .hangn of dazzling talk such ns. I fear , Is no * often heard nowadays. But Florence didn't expand. All hands noticed that he war under reefed sails. He was almost Eloomy. Vlchy and milk was hls'n nnd hs couldn't bo persuaded to dally with even n thimbleful of the magnums' contents. They tried persuasion , ridicule , everything , hut Florence only fhonk hlfi heid solemnly , Jerornn Implored him to nbandrn his chap- eronn manner and Travers stuttered something - thing to Iho general effect that as n duenna Florence was a.howling fiasco. But Florenct was not to be moved. " 'Gentlemen , ' bo said to them , with gloomy dignity , 'I am bound lo chains In thin matter. Plcnd with mo not. ' "Whereupon they all roared at him nnd 10 looked completely "miserable. " The riot of wit nnd laughter wont on , with Flornncn sitting twiddling his thumbs hopelessly. when there was a knock on the door. " 'Como In , ' shouted the gentleman In whoco apartmcntc. the fun was going on. "A Western Union messenger entered. " 'Telegram ' for Mr. Wllllncn J. Florence in paid. ' Florencn nodded thn boy to him and opened the telegram with a bored expres sion1. Ho had no Idea rf Its contents. "Ho rend It mid then ho Jumped Eovcral 'ect ' In the air. Thorn ivaH a broad grin on his face. " 'Jerome , ' raid he , 'Just touch that hut- on for me , will you , please ? I want t order another caseof magnums.
