CHICAGO , Dec. 8. Whcnt ruled stroiiR
todny , supported by light receipts , rain In
Argentina and the llrmncss of Liverpool ,
Mny closing KWAc over yesterday at 70'i >
TOUc. May corn eloped % o and May oats a
shade higher. Provisions , strengthened by
good whipping demand , were strong , closing
iliWlOo iii | for May lard und ribs and 20c
higher for May pork.
In the face of light receipts , the firmness
of Liverpool occupied second place as a
factor In the strength of the wheat market
at the opening , when May , at 69fcft70c ? ,
hawed a gain over night of H&UfC'om -
mlsKlon houses wore In the pit with u plont-
lludo of country orders , hut these were
mostly for small lots. Their buying , to-
K'ither with purchases made for the short
account , was sutllclent to boost the price ,
tha ascent early carrying May to 7u'ic. Uul-
llrh sentiment was emphatic and aside from
some vigorous selling against calls , whlcl
pushed the prlco back for slight losses
there was nothing Influential enough In th
HatlstlcH to depress the market. Karly
statistics of a bullish nature were rein
forced later by confirmation of the repor
of rain In the Argentine republic , wher
harvesting U on.
The Inactivity of trading was duo prln
clpally to the disposition of traders to
await some frce > h Inspiration or gruate
stress on previously existing supporting
features. May at the closn was % 5H4c ovc
yesterday ut TO'.tftiOVic. ' New Vork re
pjrtf < l foreigners buying and twenty boat
loiidst taken for export. Clearances were
voiy light , eo.ua ! In wheat and flour at At
l.intlc ports to 85,000 bushels. Primary west
ern receipts were fiSO.OOO bushels , against
1,4'iS.OfX ) bushel ? a year ago. Minneapolis
ami Duluth reported 490 cars , against 929 fo
two days last week and S57 the correspond
InK day last year. Local receipts were tlf ty
two cars , eight of contract grade.
Corn was llrm , for which thanks were due
to the wheat market , although report ? o
small country acceptances to last night's
bids came In according to recent habit. The
shipping demand was slow at the rail tar
Iffs and the market was dull almost com
plctcly In the handp of local dealers. Clear
snces were 362,000 bushels und local receipts
29.1 cars. Primary points reported receipts
of 3S6.400 bushels , compared with 629,800
bushels lart year. May ranged at fron
; KHc to 33o , closing llrm , jc over yestcrdaj
at 33c.
Oats was firm , because the other grain
markets were. The cash Inquiry was any
thing but clamorous. Clearance ? were 4SX ( >
bushels and receipts were 193 cars. May soli
at from 2lc to 2U4TJ24'Jc , closing a shade
over yesterday at 2l',6e.
The provision market was broad am
rtrong more like an outsider's market than
anything seen here In weeks. The advance
was In spite of liberal hog receipts , the PX-
cellont demand from the outside overcoming
ull conditions of a depressing tendency. The
opening was llrm anil the advance tlrml.v
maintained on an active market. May pork
ranged from J9.S2V4 to tlO.02 % and closed 20c
J5.32VfrH5.35.

NEW YORK , Dec. 8. Nearly every
stock In the list declined today. In the In
dustrials the IOR-CS ranged from 2 lo nearly
7 points. The railroads did not suffer so
much , but a number closed 1 and 2 points
lower than last night. The principal vic
tims of the selling were the Iron and steel
stocks , as has been the cai c all week , nnd
Tennersce Coal led the group , with a net
loss of G'/i points' . Quite n number of other
metal stocks closed more than 4 points
lower. Sugar was very active nnd weak
throughout the session nnd deed at the
low point , with n net loss of 4't. Tobacco ,
the Rubber stocks und the New York spe
cialties were nil prominent In the break anil
lost 3 points or upward. Manhattan was
rather an exception and Its loss wm- only
n fraction.
The bears xvcre active and aggressive nnd
had much to do with starting the define ,
but they reaped a rich return in the un
covering of stoploss orders , as margins
were wiped out und heavy offerings were
precipitated on the market. The banks
were calling loans nil day nnd the convic
tion Is unavoidable that a very dnu tie
liquidation of long accounts was affected.
A large part of the selling wns forced by
the. catling of loans and the dllllculty of
obtaining new accommodations , the borrow
ing demand rushing the call loan rate up
to 12 per cent on the late dealings. Tired
holders who have hoped for an upward
turn In prices also abandoned their posi
tion and threw over their stocks. When
the preliminary estimateof , the weekly
changes made their appearance the dllll-
cultlcs of the money market were ex
plained. The bears seized the occasion to
aggravate the situation by setting afloat a
story that "the associated banks of the
United States. " whatever that might mean ,
had loaned the Bank of England J20.000.000.
No basis could be found for the story , but
Its Inherent Improbability did not prevent
It having considerable effect In aiding the
demoralization.
The hardening of money In Berlin nnd
.Paris . and the heavy loss.In gold by the'
Bank of England for shipment to South ,
Africa were evidences of the constriction of
the money supply abroad. This was suf
ficient to keep the sterling exchange rate
tlrm In spite of our own stiffening money
rate , but there was a significant decline In
the rate of exchange on Pnrln In response
to London's measures to shift pressure upon
that center , i
Tomorrow's New York bank statement Is
expected to show n loss In cash of over
J6.000.000. Of this nearly J5.roo.COO Is on sub-
treai ury operations. Including Jl,535,000 de
posited for transfer to the touth. On the
direct Interior movement by express the
banks have Increased their shipments more
than J600.000 over last week , whllo their
receipts from the same source have de.- .

Transvaal news. Com-ols were 102J4 , dropping -

CATTLE Total receipts of cattle were
af moderate proportions and of the num
ber reported In nftoen cars were consigned
dlrect'to packers , so that there were no
very many of any one kind of cuttle or
sale. The market as a whole might be dc
perilled as unchanged on good kinds , bu !
very slow on common grades.
A few pretty fair cornfed steers were or
sale and they met with quite ready sal (
at good , steady prices. On the other bane
the warmed-up cattle , as a rule , were slow
and weak. Shippers will understand thai
the market Is now in very much the same
condition as is usual Just before the
holidays. Buyers seem to want good cattle
every day , but at the same time are verj
much Inclined to dlrcrlmlnate against the
half-fat or warmed-up cattle. The resull
is that while1 good , well-fattened cattle re
main about steady from day to day the
less desirable tattle art quitea little lowet
for the week.
The best cows nnd heifers , pilch as buyers
seemed to want , sold at steady prices and
the market was In good shape on that kind
of stuff. As was the case with the corn-
fed steers , the common kinds were slow
sale and holders of such complained that It
was hard work to get satisfactory prices ,
Buyers as a rule admitted that they were
buying the common to medium grades a
little easier than yesterday. Bulls sold at
about the same old prices.
Stockers and feeders were In very
moderate supply and it was , also the last
of the week , EO that no great activity was
possible. Good kinds could safely be re
ported as Pteady with yesterday. The
tendency on everything a little "ft from
week. Representative
the best has been lower this
resentative sales :

HOGS Today's hog market opened strong
to 214o higher und active on the more de

Big heavy loads were not so much sought
after. A little later on and before Hellers
liuil time to unload , the more urgent orders

came rather dull. Buyers did not seem to
care about putting much If anything onto
Ihe prices paid yesterday for heavy hogs.
On the other hand , salesmen all wanted
nn artvanco and hence were slow about sell-

i n the market picked up again und closed
about like the opening. It will be noted
rrom the sales below , as well as from
the table of avcrngo prices , that the mar
