GOAT AXO 1IBAH KlfillT A DRAW.
Itriilii Wim I'Mi-il ' t i > ntul ( lie Fltrht
AVim Takeii Out of Hilly.
"H has always been my lot , " said tlio
man with the sandy whiskers to a New York
Sun reporter , "to witness fights nml strug
gles of every sort , kind and description.
My presence seems to Inspire In all creatures
of the lower kingdom tbo desire to engage
ono another In mortal combat. If I stop to
look at a cage of monkeys , they show elgna
of enmity toward one another and soon a
glorious free-for-all fight occurs.
"You know I used to travel around quite
come before I took to hitting the bowl , and
when I was In the Rockies I saw some pretty
fierce scraps. The worst I over saw was
between a goat and n bear. You think the
goat didn't have a ehow , eh ? Well , there Is
a difference In goats. The animal of which
I am speaking was a dovll. Ho belonged tea
a fellow whose name was Mike , and Mlko
was the only one that could come- within
four yards of him. I never saw any llvlns
creature so full of aggressiveness and fight.
Ho looked for trouble with his feet. His
horns were hie strongest weapons , and any
low-down tactics that ho didn't have at bis
hoofs' ends aren't worth looming. He had
a record of smashing every fence within n
radius of ten miles , and every child In the
place had at some time been momentarily
deprived of his wind at the horns of this
beast.
"One day the brute disappeared. He could
not be found anywhere in the village. The
Joy of the children was great , but Mike set
great store by Billy , in spite of his pug
nacious nature. He came to the conclusion
that he had taken to the woods , and sug
gested tfiat I should accompany him on a
searching expedition. There was nothing
to do in tlio village but to play pool on
a'table that was about as level as a duck's
hack , BO I allowed that I would llko to go
along. Wo set out the next morning at
about ! > o'clock , and when ho had goha
about five miles Into the woods we saw
Billy chewing up bushes.
"Mlko went after him and with a rope
nnd the firm Intention of tying him to a
tree nud throwing a few things into him
that would make him repent of his wayward
ness. Mike was advancing cautiously , when
ho suddenly gnvo a yell and skinned up a
tree like an ape. I looked up and saw a
large grizzly bear coming straight for us.
I made a dash for the tree next Mike's , and
then wo found the time to cuss at each
other for not having brought a gun.
"The boar saw the goat and made straight
for him. But Bill scented danger. Ills nose
quivered and his beard grew stiff and wo
knew that there was going to be trouble.
Bruin adopted his usual tactics and advanced
on his legs , But BUI was not the goat to be
scared by a thing like that , and he gathered
himself together and charged , There was a
mix-up of goat and bear , and Bill emerged
from the bunch with a triumphant gleam in
hla eyo. But ho had several things to learn
yet. Ae soon as the bear regained his wind
ho wan up and willing , and ho charged llko
a steam engine. Billy dodged , hut when ho
got away there was a goodly part of his
flank In the bear'n claws. Both animals were
now thoroughly enraged , and each was care
ful. They circled around until Mr. 'Bruin
could think of nothing better to do than to
repeat his hind leg act. But this again
proved to be his downfall. Billy advanced
with n dancing approach and delivered a
fierce butt and belly blow. The hear went
down and this time Billy Improved his time.
"While Bruin was recovering his wind the
second tlmo Billy Jumped about a yard In
the air and landed squarely on the bear's
Bhlo with his legs rigid. If he had been n
little heavier ho would have llnlahed hl
opponnnt right there. But ho wasn't nnd
his triumph was short-lived. The bear arose
and once more returned to the charge. This
time ho wns out for blood. Ho v.'ent for
Billy and Billy wont for him ,
"In spite of great generalship Billy found
himself within the bear's hug. We thought
It wns all off with him , and BO It would Imvo
been If fate hadn't taken a hand. It no hap
pened that the buar hail Billy wrong end to.
That Is , ho was grasping Dllly'a hind quar
ters with his forepaws. And then Hilly did
a deed that will always make him famous In
goat history , He nearly kicked that bear's
head off. The donkey family is mippoaed to
be pretty efficient In this particular line ,
But all records ever made by jackasses or
anything olflo that pretends to be able to
wriggle Its feet were thrown In the shade.
Words are not adequate to describe the way
that goat kicked , Billy's hind legs worked
up and down HO fa t that you couldn't ECU
them.
"Pretty soon the bear let go and neither ho
nor Billy moved. Wo came down and In
vestigated. That hear didn't have a feature
loft , What hail been his fnco looked llko n
piece of corned beef. We found that all hla
ribs wrro broken on ono ulilo und seven on
the other. "
"What became of the goat ? " asked a
listener.
"Ho recovered , but he was never the same
goat. The bear had hugged all the fight out
of him. "
