Wheat Finds Eottom on Long Decline and

RECENT BREAK AMOUNTS TO FIVE CENTS

in n Mouth.
OHICAGO , Nov. 6.-AI1 the grain markets
ncro strong todny nnd good advancts were
ecorcd , wheat closing lit nic ndvnncc , corn
Hff&c higher and oats UMic higher. Pro
visions closed- substantially unchanged.
Higher cables and small world's shipments
Kartell a buying movement In wheat , nil
the moru effective on nccount of the break
of over oc In less than a month ,
The opening In wncnt , though quiet , was
not without Interest and considerable
strength was shown. For the llrst time In
weeks the productive buyers had sonic-
thing really substantial to encourage them ,
Jit strong nnd higher cables and world's
shipments that were much smaller than had
been looked for , with prospects of a con-
tlnualico of smalt shlumtnts , Uneasiness
l > y local shorts shown on Saturday's curb
was much more iippari'nt at the ouenlng
today nnd buying from that class of trad
ers had much to do with the advance In
prices that took place. The demand was
not heavy , but offerings were few nnd far
between , nnd shorts In consequence had
fcome dllllcuky nt times In covering. There
was some selling by professionals on tlio
first announcement of northwest reeeuus ,
which turned out to be heavier by nearly
200 cars than the actual receipts , and later
Homo selling was also done on the an
nouncement of nn Increase of 1,400,000 bu. In
the vislblo supply. Hut nil offerings WHIP
ijulckly absorbed nnd at no time did the
market exhibit weaknors. The trend of
prices was steadily upward and during the
last hour of the session the best prices of
the day were obtainable. New York was
a fair buyer , presumably against export
engagements , although only live loads were
reported as taken tin to a. Into hour , St.
Louis was also a fair buyer at times. Min
neapolis and Duluth receipts were 1,209 cars ,
compared with 1,135 cars last week nnd 1.7S-J
cars n year ngo. Chicago receipts were 171
cars , 3S of which graded contract. World's
shipments were put at 6,073,000 bu. Local
Flocks showed an Increase of G30.000 bu.
Primary receipts were 1,331,000 bu. Atlantic
jiort clearances of wheat and Hour
amounted to 749,000 bu. There was n good
milling- demand for the low grades of
wheat. December opened U@-c higher at
CSl4 < &fiS.f. ( . After a slight further rally it
eased off to CSHc , then gradually advanced
to f,9c , which was the closing figure.
C'orn was Ilrm. partly In sympathy with
wheat nnd partly on account of Ilrm cables
mid moderate lnc.il receipts. The local de
crease , 823,000 bu. , was even larger than
expected and also had home Influence.
There was a general covering movement
1 > y shorts In both December and May and
advanced prices were well maintained. He-
icflptswere iiOfi tar" . December ranged
from SOVio to 31' ' , < c and closed ' .iiQ Sc higher
at 3U6S31WC.
The market for oats was almost entirely
a sympathetic one. prices following In a
small way the nuetuatlons of wheat and
corn. I'rlces advanced slightly early in
the session on scattered covering by shorts
nnd the advance was well maintained. Kle-
vator people sold moderately. An Increase
of only 50,000 bu. visible had some Influence.
Receipts were 358 cars. December ranged
from 22gff(22l , < tC to 22c and closed 'dSftto
higher at 22Ml22c.
Provisions were slow , but In the main
steady. Heavy receipts of hogs acted ns a
drag to the market , but the silent open
ing decline was BOOJI recovered and for
the rest of thn session prices kept wlth'n
n. narrow range. Shipments of meats were
liberal nnd this and the strength of the
grain markets sustained provisions. At the
close January pork was unchanged at $9.75
< ff9.771,4 , January lard unchanged at $5.27'/2
< ind January ribs u shade hlcher at $1,95
. .

Symptom * of AVcnUncus Dlxniipcnr
nnil Sharp Onlns IXnbllNlieil.
NEW YORK , Nov. 6.-The course of the
stock market todny effectually dlslpated
the symptoms of weakness which were
engendered by the Saturday bank slnle-
menl. The course of prices was downward
In Iho early dealings , but practically all
the declines were recovered nnd some strik
ing gains were established In u consider
able l.sl of stocks. The downward course
proceeded to the. extent of 1 to 2 per cent
In a number of the prominent Industrials
nnd reached ns much ns n point In a num i
ber of the railroads , Including- examples
from the grangers , southwestern , southern ,
coalers nnd trunk 1'ncs. ' NorthwMiern
.dropped at one time 214. I the lending In
dustrials a level of prices was subsequently
established reaching generally n poltil nbovo
Saturday , The railroad group win not so
resilient , but Its downward course of the
morning was very generally retraced and
fractional net gains are the rule. In South
ern Pacific the recent large nnd organized
buying was resumed after the decline
had reached ? i nnd U was advanced 1 % and
closed Ihcrc. The speculation In Leather
continued on nn enormous scale , the prlro
being raised on running sales of 20,0 shares
nt the opening from . % below to 14 above
Saturday's price. Subsequently the loss ot
Saturday was more than recovered nnd the
price lifted lo within n shade of 41. Thtro
was heavy realizing In the slock In Ihe Inle
dcnllngF , but It was ( Irmly supported at
40. The renewed suppoi t by Ihe spcculiitlvu
pool In Lenlhcr had no small inlluenco In
dissipating the fears of a general break In
prices.
There were ninny soothing explanations
offered of the exhibit of n deficit In surplus
reserves by Saturday's bank statement.
The favorite explanation among speculators
was tnai u was due to an "error in me
return of a slncle bank , or rather to Ihe
rectification of an error made In the previ
ous week's return. It was this crier , so It
wns said , which caused Iho unduly favor
able statement of October 23 nnd the al
lowance for It which made the showing ot
the dellclt of last Saturday nnd upset the
stock market. The comfort lound In this
explanation was somewhat d'sturhcd by Ihe

NEW YORK , Nov. C. COTTON The
market for cotton -futures exhibited many
signs of inherent strength today , with the
leading- feature broadening speculation. The
tendency of prices was upward In the fore
noon , but later In the day very heavy profit-
taking served to check further Improve
ment and nt times forced a partial reaction.
The opening was steady , with the active
options S@ll points higher , this being but a
few points below' ' the top notch for the ses
sion. Around the opening- shorts , room
bulls , the Investment public , southern in
terests and the foreign clique were all iden
tified as active bilyers. with len or more un-
remltllng- their1 efforts throughout the
rest of the dixy. Behind this general de
sire to secure cotton were strong cables
from Europe , public and private , and a
bullish batch of ( reports from the crop cen
ters.1. As for the foreign markets , Liverpool
had unexpectedly advanced 303V4 points in
the future department and l-32d In the
spot department. Special dispatches to
traders on 'change staled lhat heavy frosls
had occurred In Iho Mississippi vllley and
pretty much throughout the northern belt
during the last two nights. In pplto of 3-16
iftlic In the bid prices many spot cotton
dealers in the south could not be Induced to
part with the small supplies remaining In
their possession , this causing great uneasi
ness In export circles and among American
spinners , all of whom were In need of sup
plies for prompt shipment. The receipts at
nearly all point ? made a poor showing In
comparison with those of equal date a year
ago. At the close the market for futures
was very steady In tone , with prices net
6J(15 points higher.

CATTLE Killing cattle of all kinds were
In very moderate supply this morning nnd
the market In consequence In a good
healthy condition and to the liking of sell
ers.
There were no western beef steers of nnj
consequence and not many cornfeds , so that
the market was active and stronger on that
kind. Some would say quite a little higher
but to call It strong and active woult
more nearly express the real condition of
the market. Owing to the scarcity of beef
local packers were better buyers than the
feeder speculators and they took cattle that
would ordinarily go for feeders.
Cows and heifers were not very plentiful
and the market on that kind of cattle was
also strong and active nnd practically
everything changed hands In good season.
Bulls brought the same old prices.
Stockers and feeders were very slow sale
and outside of a few .sales of something
that Jus > t happened to please some buyer
the market was not only slow , but lower.
All kinds were very slow sale and nt a
late hour there were still cattle unsold.
The cause for the market being In such a
condition wan due to the fact that specu
lators were forced to carry a good many
cattle over from last week and in consequence
quence were not ready to buy many more
until a country demand materialized. The
break In the market has carrle-d prices
pfotty well down toward the low point.
Calves especially are way down to what
they were a little while ago. Representa

most of the hogs sold In good season , but
later on buyers , under the evident Impres

There was also a fair demand for feeders
and prices on that kind were Just about
the same as prevailed nt the elo-'t of la t

Is a good demand for desirable feeding
lambs right along , but old ewes seem to
drag most of the time , though the pens
have been fairly well cleared on most days.
