That branch of the Navy department
which attends to the feeding of the Bailers ,
reports the New York Journal , was thrown
Into a condition of great alarm yesterday
when the news reached It that Leon Mich
aels had ben recaptured ,
Michaels was the greatest eater In the
navy. When at Santiago the shots wcro
flylug around the battleship Texas , on which
he served , he etood at his gun , alternately
putting a cartridge Into a breech nnd a
doughnut Into his mouth. After the bat
tle , when Captain Philip called the sailors
aft to address them , Michaels was eating
a ham sandwich.
At every meal he waa the first man at the
table and thu last to leave. His life was
"one grand eweet feed. " Captain Philip
watched him with alarm. Whenever vis
itors came aboard Michaels was pointed out
to them as a wonder , and whenever ho got
the chance he would eat for them , just for
the credit of the navy.
Uncle Sam gives his sailors an unlimited'
diet , but It was not enough for Michaels ,
who wanted lunch basketo hung on tha
masts and troughs full of crackers and
cheese put around the bhlp at short Inter
vals.

ship's surgeon told him that perhaps his
loading capacity was not large enough and
