Wheat opened weak and after n fotble rally near the "commencement on covering showed a declining tendency for the re mainder of the sess'on. ' Nearly everything .combined to create a bearish sentiment. Argentine shipments for the week were un usually Innti' , amounting to 1,072,000 bu. Crop conditions In that country wore rc- iporttil pronilslng , the scarcity of ocean vessels alone preventing enormous exports. Such evidence of the undlmlnlshed shipping capacity of the South American republic , roupletl with a steady Increase In the do- me.ullu visible supply , disheartened holders of long wheat , who unloaded freely. There WHS also conslderablo Felling for thn short account and s the demand wns sluggish the market sagged steadily until ni'ar the cnd ivhen covering started an upturn. The Improvement was only Umporary , however , ns llntildatlon on a heavy scale followed , nnd the market closed weak within u frac tion of the bottom of tihe day's range. A slack cash demand and reports of the ex- eellont condition of th-i winter wheat , as a result of the re-cent heavy rains , stimu lated tin- selling movement. Corn was active nnd strong early , but eventually weakened under liquidation , en couraged by an estimate by an authorlta- tivo stfitlstl-elan that the total yield would amount to 2,2X\000jt ( ) hu. , Instead of 2,000 , 000,000 bu. ns predict'by the government bureau. A disappointing poor cash demand was also against the market , but the coun try tiuylng , owing to wet weather ami mod- crat receipts , prevented any Important break and the market closed steady. Hrnllclnic lit l.nxt llniir inln Inl ( 1'nrlr ( Intnn f HieMnrlipl , NEW YORK , Oct. 27.-The stock mnrket made a conrldcrnble display of strength during the early hours of the day. Later there were occasional advances by Individ ual stoekri or groups , some of which saved gains on the day , but In the majority of rases the active selling movement of the last hour wiped out the earlier gains nnd carried prices * In some c.ist-s sharply below last night's level. The motive of the selling - ing wns the fear of nn unfavorable bank Biatetnent tomorrow , as well as to take at- trnctlvo profit ? on the week's advance. The high-priced Industrial specialties nnd the Iron and steel Flocks were conspicuous In the late reaction. The most notable movement , of the day was the rise In some of the rnllronds running through the M > uth " " < ) , southwest. Loul.ivllle fi Southern Railway led with an extreme advance of 1J4. Missouri Pacific was n close necond. There was notable tlrmness also in Mo bile & Ohio. Chesapeake fit Ohio , Texa > t Pnclllc , St. Louis St Southwestern , after early weakness nnd the Baltimore .1 Ohl.i Kocks. The larger railroad earnings shown by monthly returns caused the movement. The same motive advanced the price of AtclilBon preferred and Northern Pnclllc. The speculation was mixed during the gr i er part of the day , many of the leadIng - Ing Industrials elrlftlng up ami down at a level either sideof last night's prices. This was true of Sugar , Tobacco , Manhattan nnd the leather Mtorks. The last unmet ! were reactionary early In the day. but the pre ferred stock came Into netivo demand late In the day , with n rise of 2V4. Other points 9r atr , ° , nBth at different times were Rubber , Ropuhllc Steel , General Electric , Lnclcda Gas , Tennessee Coal , Colorado Fuel and Chicago & Eastern Illinois preferred. New ork , Chicago & St. Louis llrst preferred dropped over 5 points on a Minnie transac tion without exciting any attention. There were various points of weakness In the minor specialties. Slocks of companies hav ing to do with the metnl Industries were all Inclined to heaviness on account of the re actionary tendency In the prlco of the metals. The Iron nnd steel stocks wore not exempt. Steel and Wlro dropping an ex treme 2j. with only n feeble rally. Call money Hurried to 10 per ce-nt , with the late demand for loans to carry over till Monday and was quite llrm at 6fi7 per cent nil day , According to statements by the leading banks the net shipments of currency to the Interior , both by express and by de- posltr , at the siibtrcasury for telegraphic transfer amounted to nbout J2.500.000. After allowing for receipts of n considerable sum in gold from the assay oince by the bnnks their loss to the subtreasiiry still amounts to upward of Jl.000.000. Tomorrow's state ment Is therefore expected to show a loss In cash of fully J3.500.000. Unless the loan account of the batiks has been largely ell- mlnlshed It IP evident that the surplus re- Jfrve which stood IBM Saturday nt only Jlt41.07o. must have been wiped out anel a deficit established. The bond market eased off late inthe day In sympathy with stocks , but earlier trains were not In all cases wlpe-el out. Total pales , par value. J1,915K ( . United States bonds were unchanged In bid quotations. The Commercial Advertiser's London financial cablegram says : ' 'The marke-ts here opened rather dull today , but became hard on the early news of the victorious sortie at Klmberley. The close wns cheer ful on an unconfirmed rumor of a fresh victory at Lndysmlth. Connote responded with nn advance of 3-K to 101H. Conndcnce ! was Imparted further by expression of the 1 opinion now becoming general that there 1 will bo a money squeeze as a result of the war. American securities were hard I throughout the session and closed nt the best. They were fairly active. Favorites were Southern Railway Issues. Louisville & Nashville nnd Chesapeake .t Ohio. Suan- Ish l.o were 61. It Is rumored thnt the Bank of Paris in negotiating n big conversion of the Spanish loan. TlntoR were 47',4. Ana condas 9 5-16 , I'tahs 7'4. The Bank of Eng land bought 26,000 gold In German coin. i.lo.000 wns engaged for South America nnd 15,000 for nn undisclosed destination. NEW YORK , Oct. 27. COTTON Price variations In today's cotton market did not exceed G points and at no time could trad- i Ing be termed active , The speculative hesl- | tatlon was due largely to peculiarly con- i fllctlng Ideas on the crop subject and as to i the outstanding Interest , though as to "the " I latter it was quite generally admitted on the local exchange that the Investment public held a largo amount of Jnnuary , March and May delivery staple. The open ing was easy , with prices unchanged to 4 points lower , Xollowing- disappointing Eng lish cables and under foreign selling pres sure. An occasional effort wns made later to dislodge loosely held long stuff , but these endeavors were feeble nndtherefore unsuc cessful. .Near the close shorts became nervous , the weekly statistical showing having averaged up In very bullish form. A turn to cover sent prices plowly upward , with the market finally steady In tone and prices 2 points lower to 1 point net higher. Wool Market. BOSTON. The market as a whole wns not very much chanpod. Uecf cattle were , in small supply and met with quite ready sale at fully steady prices. Ihls applies to both Brass and cornfcd beeves. There was nothlnK very Rood , in the way of cornfed beeves to put a top on the market , so that the Bales do not look very high on paper. Cows and heifers of desirable Quality were In good demand and the mnrket not materially changed. The offerings for the most part sold In good season and in Just about the same notc/lios as yosterday. Stockers and feeders were scarce and the market strong. Bo few have arrived In the last few days whllo there has been an active country demand that the yards have been pretty well cleared and prices have accordingly firmed up a little. It is safe to say that desirable kinds are 1020c hlehor than last week. The rains In the country , which have filled up the water holes and made It possible to put out cattle In some localities that were waterless a week ago , have Improved the demand. The corn nclds arc also belne Kot ready for cattle and shipments to the country during the last few days show decided gains. Representative sales : BEEF STEERS. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. Pr. No. Av.
