CHICAGO. Oct. 20. Corn led the proces
sion on 'change today nnd closed with a
Bit In of $ tfjHc for the December option. A
Kcneral buying movement. Induced by the-
Brewing conviction that this year's crop
has been greatly overestimated , caused thu
upturn. December w'hcal closed with a
gain of Ufa-He and oats He. Provisions
I were dull and closed practically unchanged.
| Whrtil o'pened rteady and ncorcd a "Sic " ad
vance over last night's close during the
first hour's 'trading. ' Early news was gen
erally of n , bearish cast , but shorts wcro
i nervous over the situation In South Africa
! i' j ' " " ' commenced covering from the start.
The Htrength In corn also encouraged buj-
Ing mid as offerings were scarce the up
turn was easily accomplished. December
opened ' , ie higher nt 70rn'i70' ; ' [ ' < 4C and ad
vanced to "I'.lc. At the hitter figure , how
ever , u good clenl of long wheat w.is thrown
on the market and a reaction to 70i'il70Ttc
followed. Tlie latter pan of the session
was extremely dull , with the prices barely
holding nt 70VF/71P / and llnally closing with
liuyerH at " 0e. Indications of an Increase
of l.&WMiOO bushels In the domestic visible
during the week and reports of complete
relief In the drouth-stricken sections luid n
depressing Iniluence after , the early trad-
Ing. Spot demnnd was poor. Chicago re
ceived 100 ears , six of which graded con
tract. Minneapolis and Duluth got only 47ft
ears , rninpiired with 7i0 ! for the correspondIng -
Ing day n year ago. Total western primary
receipts were SfiS.OOO bushels. Allnntle | ) orl
rlenrances In wheat and flour equaled 499-
000 bushels.
Corn was strong and active. A report by
nn authoritative statistician that th" early
estimates ! of this year's yield must be ma-
i lerlally reduced owing to disappointing
husklnir returns was the chief buying mo
tive. The market advanced steadl.y uniU
near the close , when selling by smppnrj
and prolH-tnklng caused a slight reartlon.
Cnsh demand was ) lack. Receipts 415 cars.
December opened 14,0 higher nt : llji'S3lic. | ;
mild sparingly < U 8l4e , inlvanccd to 32'ic
nnd closed at 32c.
Oits was dull , but hi > ld steady In sym
pathy with corn. The principal trade con
sisted of changing from December to May ,
with the result of n slight narrowing of the.
spread. Receipts' , 272 curst. December
opened a shaile lower at S2Wa2240 and ad
vanced to 22'fcc.
The advance In corn strengthened pro
visions early , but the market yielded under
heavy liquidation near the end and the ad-
vnnco wim all lost ; January corn closed

changed at $5.37'/4 and January ribs a shndo

NEW YORK. Oct. 26.-Tho ovldences o
ftrcngth In yesterday's Block market nt
traded qu.llo a large buying Interest till
morning and the market after the first hou
took the upward rourso with very actlv
trading. The demand thowed , however , a
marked falling off during the real of th
day and the Isolated polntn of strength 1
which developed from time to time proved
unavailing fo sustain prices and the drift
was downward until the close , which was
very generally at the low point of the day ,
nnil at a level below lust night. The mar
ket during the first hour wiia conspicuous
for the great breadth of the demand , the
number of stocks which moved being no
Iff * than 125 , The aggregate number of
shares dealt In was also very large.
Broudly speaking , the market was a re-
vernal of that of yesterday. In that rail
roads generally were. Inclined to react ,
while thi > Industrial Mocks moved upward.
The evidences of prollt-taklng In the coal
ers , wh'ch were manlfept even In the openIng -
Ing dealing * ' , prompted selling to realize in
the railroad list. The outside demand for
stocks was very much Increased and It wa
this which was foil by the profehMonal op-
eratort' who have been accumulating stocks
at the lower level. At the fame time the
vigorous strength of Sugar. Tobacco
Brooklyn Trniibt ! , Rubber and other Indun-
trluls ami the continued fiprcuiatlon In the
Leather flocks helped to sustain thu list ,
while the realizing was going on. These
Ptock all suffered to the extent of from 1
to over 4 points In the late downward move
ment. Innlde support was manifest In
some of the ncweliuluatrialfi , which have
been tlio target recently for bear attack.
This was notably true of tha Malting and
Glucose stocks. Malting- preferred lending f
with a rls < > of nearly B polntn. Of the low-
priced stock ! ) Standard Hope and Twine-
was brought forward with nn advance of
2H , half of which was subsequently lost ,
The Iron nd steel Mockg also received
favorable attention , especially Federal
Steel , but gains In them were no hotter held
than ele where. There wcro other Individual - |
ual stocks which were strong nt different |
times , Including Atchlson preferred on Ita
September statement of net earnings ,
Southern Railway and Chesapeake & Ohio , i
IwOnrton wns a buyer hero , though on n i
smnlltr scale than yesterday , and sterling .
exchange yielded a fraction In consequence : .
Apprehension of nn unfavorable showing '
by the banks on Saturday wns nn Influence
In the growing heaviness of stocks. New
Jerk cxehnngo nhows some recovery at a
few Important Interior points , but continues
downward nt others and the outward movement - i
ment of money hup not yet ceased. The
lianks' net loss to the subtreasury thus far
foots up over } l.3uo,0oo for the week. The
rate for call lo.nn dropped suddenly near
the close to 2 per cent , but only after the
bulk of the day's demnnds hml been met at
n',4 to 7 per cent. Tenders of money on
time hold out for 6 per cent nnd exact
choice collateral. The fact Is that some ot
the largo Interests operating In the market
have been lenders of money and are calling
their loans for their own operations In
stocks.
The dealings In bonds disclosed the same
breadth of demand as thope In stocks , many
dormant Issues being brought Into the trad
ing. Standard Hope nnd Twine Incomes
rose nn extreme 3' , * and reacted 2. The

CATTLE The general market today'was
In pretty fair shape and though there was
a liuerul run for tills time in Hie week , the
most of the cattle changed hands In good
seut > on.
| Beef cattle were about steady , both grass
i steers anil cornfeds , but the offerings were
, light and ihcru was an abduiice of anything
I very choice among the ottering * , so that
i the sales do not make very much of a thow-
ing on paper. About everything In tne way
I ot beeves , changed hands early in the uay.
I Wnrmd-up catuu are beginning to put m
an appearance and today a bunch sold for
J4.GO.There
There were more cows and heifers here
today in proportion to the total receipts
than usual. Salesmen who had deslraolc
suutt and wcro ublo to get hold of a buyer
cany thought the marKet was not much
changed from what it was" yesterday. On
thu o.her hand , there was a good deal of
common stuff In the yards , which was slow
salu at a little lower prices. The situation
could best be described by calling It a K'.OW
to easier market. Hulls seemed to be in
fairly good demand and prices were aoi ma
terially different from yesterday.
dtockcrs and feeJers were bftlOc higher
than yesterday , or IWiCloc higher than ins ;
week , and active. Yesterday there was a
good country demand and the cii.tlo in the
handH of speculators were pretty well
cleaned up , s > o that everyone was looking
lor iresh cattle today , while the receipts
were a little slim. Representative sales :

I lOliS Today's market was i'/- jc higher
and active nt the advance , so mat all the
early arrivals were disposed of In a short
time. 'Ihe lions on the late trains did not
fam so well , the market closing a llltlo
easlir , tb.it islth at least a part ot the
advance lost. Krom thu table ot average
prices It will be noted that the advance
was pretty closi > to oc on an average , from
the representative sales it will he. noted
that h nvy and light hogs sold at alioitt
the same prices , the ranse In prices being
duo more to quality than to weight. One
load of goc-1 medium weight to heavy hog.i
brought $1.2o , which was bu hlghir than tile
best price paid yesterday. A considerable
proportion of all the hogs brought $ U7Vs ,
while the long string yesterday was at
$4.121 4.15.
If hn.ppers will take the trouble to com
pare ths market with the way hogs are
silling in ottier markets they will fee at
ont'e that bouth Uinaha has been thu nigh
market for some time. back. Representative

SHEEP There were only ten cars re
ported in the yards today , two of them
single decks , and almost all of them lambs * .
The markm on lambs was steady , in fact
some that were rnrrlfil over from yesterday
brought a price that was Be higher than
was offered for the same bunch yesterday.
Thn market , however , wns not partlfulnrly
active fcr the- reason that there' were ton
many lambs and not enouRh sheep. Packers
wire all inquiring for cheep and had there
been any here to amount to anything they
would undoubtedly have sold readily at
good , strady prices.
The demand for feeding sheep and lambs
Is active nnd prices are strong In con .
sequence. Evcrvth'ng ' desirable seems to |
find a buyfr without much dlfllciilty and
the pens are kept well denied of that kind
of stuff.
