" " of the curious "Peg Lcc" Harrington , ono characters well known at the city Jail , ln the police court and In very few places besides , unexpcctedljT'BUrrcndercd his claim to the hospitality of the police department Wednesday afternoon In the emergency room by dying. The patrol wagon brought "Peg Leg" to the station during the morn ing In a state of coltapso from the effects of a prolonged spree. The "dead wagon" took him away In the afternoon to the morgue. It was to have been the ambu lance , but there was a rush of buslncoa at the county hospital during the day , and when It came "Peg Leg's" turn for atten tion , ho no longer had use for an ambu- lanco. It was up to the hearse. The last six days of "Peg Leg's" life was opent In the enjoyment of a solitary Jag In a shed back of an employment agency at Eleventh and Farnain streets. Somehow ho begged and hoarded enough nlcklcs to purchase a week's supply of liquor. Ho then repaired to the shed and passed his tlmo emptying flnska and trying to avoid din- covory nnd arrest. The shed afforded little protection from the weather , nnd the nights have boon cold. "Peg Leg" was without covering of any kind , but ho was used to sleeping In the open air In all sorts and conditions ofweather , and ho managed to keep up a good circulation by dint of fre quent application of stimulants. When the corn Juice gave out "Peg Leg" began to bo 111. Convulsions set In and friends who discovered his predicament noti fied t/lio / police. Dr. Ilnlph made an exam ination. Finding the man suffering from acute alcoholism ho ordered him sent to the county hospital. The ambulance was In UBO all the morning and "Peg Leg" went without treatment. Ho was made cora- fortablo on a cot In the emergency room and left pretty much to himself. Alxmt 2 o'clock , when Turnkey Klrlc had occasion to enter the room , ho discovered that "Peg Leg" was not breaching. A physician was hastily summoned , but the man was beyond the need of medical attendance. There are peculiarities In "Peg Leg's" mode of existence , oddities of habit and per- eonal appearance "which made him Inter esting to road about but repulsive to BCO. Ho avoided soap and water like the plague and a man with more filthier clothing never applied at the polko station for shelter. Kumar has It that "Pec Leg" was once an engineer on the Union Paclflo railroad In prosperous circumstances. That was twelve years ago , shortly after coming hero from the city of his birth and early youth , South Bond , Ind. In a freight wreck on the road two years later ho lost ono of his legs above the knee. These who are his friends now rcmemiber when ho was A section hand about eight years ago. Their inumorJes do not reach farther back. For the last few years "Peg Log" has not been working at all. An arti ficial limb whl h ho wore until sometime In 1897 became useless and had to be thrown away , filnco then ho has worn a limb of his own manufacture ; hence his soubriquet. 3Io was presented with a modern , artificial limb last spring "by " the Associated charities , but In a moment when the deelro for drink was strong upon him , ho pawned his new limb and resurrected the ono of his own make. Friends helped him to redeem the limb , hut In the weeks following It occu pied a place In a pawnshop window oftcner than. It was attached to Its owners' anatomy , and It IB still "In hock. " In the dead of winter when the cold made hallways , empty freight care and dry goods boxes uninhabitable , "Pej ; ( Leg" ap plied at the police station for shelter. When the officers became tired of officiating as his landlord and ordered him to find other lodgings , "Peg Leg" had recourse to making a toed In the enow In the path of some police man patrolling his beat , and was Invariably bundled off to the station in the patrol wagon to be thawed out. When the officers learned they had to either provide him With a bed or moke a trip In , the cold after him , they assigned "Peg Leg" a regular berth In a Jail cell. , Late ono night last fall when "Peg Leg" was searching for a resting place ho had an exciting experience. Having stumbled across n shed at the rear of a dwelling ha thought waa unoccupied , ho proceeded to pry open the door and make himself comtortablo In David Kolmltz'a kitchen , 1023 Farnam etrocrt. The family was asleep In na up- etalrs room. Mr. Kolmttz was awakened by Harrington's movements and. supposing the aolso waa made 'by a. burglar invading the promises , ho tlptocdi down the "back " stair way to the kitchen with a revolver In each hand. Harrington , hy the light of matches , was quietly ensconcing himself on an Improvised bed of sacking In a corner when Kolraltz tripped over a chair In the dark and fell ngalnst the partition. "Pear Leg" picked himself up and hurried out of the door through which ho had entered. At that In stant IColmltz appeared at the other end of the kitchen , and catcnlng sight of the In truder's flying figure , fired two shots after lilm. Harrington felt tbo bullets etrlkc and woke the neighborhood by his yells. The police , who found him hobbling out of the alley , placed him under arrest. At the > tatlon It was discovered that both bullets took effect In the beggar's wooden leg. When ho recovered from the fright , "Peg I < eg" created considerable amusement by probing for the lead with a penknife bor rowed from one of the officers for the pur pose , "Peg Leg's" only relatives are a sister nnd a brother. The brother Is named Green nnd Is employed In the Union Pacific shops , The elstcr Is said to be wealthy. Her home is In Grand Rapids , Mich. "Peg Leg's" last resting place will bo the potter's field , and In the rough pine box with him will be hurled the wooden peg which gave him a nickname. ' Cnril of TlinnU * . Reports from the larger cities of the country on the amount of building done In August In 1899 and the enmo month of the previous year show that Omaha made a greater percentage of gain In this respect during the year ending September 1 than any other city. The returns for the first six months of the year 1890 do not show any Increase , but on the contrary ao appar ent decrease , duo to the great amount of money Invested In buildings by the exposi tion last year. But the figures for the month of August Just passed , which does | not Include anything but buildings erected , for the normal residence and business de mand , reveal the fact that Omaha Is rapidly coming under the Influence of the recovery In financial and business lines. The fig ures In the tnblo subjoined show that the revival of the building trades catno later than In some of the other cities , as returns for previous years show that the 'latter ' ex perienced tholr greatest revival previous to this year , hence their email percentages for this year. That the upward trend of building etlll held good In the country as a whole , however , Is shown by the fact that In'tho twenty leading cltlea the expenditures during August , 189D , were $18,172,707 , as compared with $16,615,741 for the corrc- Bpondlng period of 1898 , on Increase of 10 per cent.
