NEW YORK. Sept. 15-Thero wna pres-

The dealing In this stock was on an enor
mous ponle and 'he amount thrown' over
board on the Ot-Lllmt maao the fact of Ins'da
liquidation obvious. The bears , of course
wore also very active In this stock nnd the
occasional covering by this element afforded
'the ' only effective check to downward
plungen of the stocks. There seemed to bo
nn support accorded at all until It had
touched 90. From that singe there were
uccaelonnl checks nnd rail feu before It
touched the extreme low point at SGft. After
a Ural rally to SS It closed again under
pressure ut n net loss of 6The other
members ot the Flower group did not de
velop uny kten sympathy until later In the
day. when People's Gas. Federal Steel and
Rock Island were down from 194 to 3 points.
These Blocks rallied somewhat before the
.
Holders of St. Paul , disappointed over yes
terday's dividend action , broke the price
1 l ) lnt at the opening , There was a sub
sequent recovery of practically all the loss
nnd the whole railroad list moved up
nearly lo last night's level In a manner to
suggest the Inauguration of nn Influential
buying movement. The appearance of
HlreiiKth was Increased by a brisk demand
for the coalers , which rose from 1 to 3i4.
The upwnrd movement came to an abrupt
rnd be-fore noon , when Brooklyn Transit ,
Sugar , People's Gas and the western rail-
rood shares generally , led by St. Paul , fell
away by rapid degrees. St. Paul dropped
to 120'4 and ruled below 130 for the rest of
the day. Except In ii fcxv Isolated cases
there was no subsequent demonstration of
strength. The closing was Irregular at net
losses throughout. The depression on for
eign stock markets had some effect here ,
the drop to the low point In St. Paul com
close upon the annuncement of the
knoM In British consols.
The Apprehension of nn unfavorable bank
itfitoment tomorrow had Its effect In the
late break. Preliminary estimates Indicate
that the bonk * have lost during the week
by shipments to the Interior and by sub-
treasury operations over $8,000,000. With
out taking account of the reduction of de
posit liabilities by reason of the week's
loan contraction , this would Indicate a fall
In bank reserves to a level about $3,500,000
below the legal limit , so that the loan con
traction must have proceeded to the ex
tent of nt least $14,000,000 In order that the
legal rwervo should be preserved Inlnct
nnd loans must have been reduced ns much
ns $24,000,000 In order to prevent a decrease
from last week's snlnll surplus recorve of
less than $2,500.000. The quiet tone
ot the money market during the latter part
of the week Indicates clearly tnnt the banks
nre within their legal rcwrve limit. Whether
this is due to the faci that the loans hiwo
been rduced or wtietficr there has been a
supply of cash from hidden sources and
not reflected In the known movement will
bo revealed by tomorrow's statement. For
eign houses have loaned money during the

Wool Market.
BOSTON , Sept. 15.-WOOL-The Commer
cial Bulletin tomorrow will say : There has
been a busy booming market for wool this
week , and the actual sales have approxi
mated nearly 10,000,000 pounds. The buying
has been done mainly by the American ,
woolen company and other large consumers ,
but there hag been also a good representa
tion of the smaller buyers. The buyjos
too has been for consumption , not on specu
lation , and prices are correspondingly
firmer. As tlio time for the London auc
tions next Tuesday draws nearer the con
sumers look for , an advance In prices , and
It Is the desire to anticipate this that has
carried sales to such nn enormous1 figure
this week. Another bull card Is the pub
lished statement of the American Woolen
company that 90 per cent of the output
af Its mills has been disposed of and the
seeds taken out of the market.

CATTLE Receipts today were fair for
this tlmo of the week , but there was no
great run. as will be noted from the table
of receipts above. A considerable proportion
tion of the cuttle consisted of stockers and
reodors , the same as all the week , and In
addition to the fresh receipts there were
Quite a good many cattle of that descrip
tion held over from yesterday. At the some
time there was quite a sprinkling of corn-
fed beeves , probably eighteen to twenty
loads all told , many of them right good.
The market on beef steers did not show
much change , though In some cases sellers
did not appear to think that they got out
quite BO well as yesterday. The market
was not particularly active , but tha most
of the fat cattle sold early , the best here
bringing $8.15. There were a few grasu
beef steers h Jd over from yesterday , but
not enough to make much of a test ot the
market.
Cows and heifers were in light supply
and the market was not entirely to the Ilk-
Ing of sellers. The feeling wns weak nnd
the trade slow. The ) tendency of the cow
market has been rather on the side ot
easier prices both yesterday and today and
values are. about lOc lower for the two
days. Other kinds of butcher stock did not
show much change. Veal calves were in
pretty good demand , some very fair west
erns bringing $6.25.
The market is all right on good heavy
feeding cattle , which seemto be In good
demand , while the 'supply' 'Is very light.
The market on the common nnd medium
kinds of lightish cattle is considerably de
moralized , and , as noted yesterday it Is
sometimes a question of finding a buyer
more than It is a question of price. It la
safe to say that the markert on this kind
of cattle Is 2540e per hundred lower than
the high time. Representative sales :

day's meeting. The president announced
that ho had decided to extend his Chicago
trip to Minneapolis and St. Paul , and con
siderable time was occupied In a discussion
of the arrangements for the cornerstone
laying at Chicago and -when nnd where the
members of the cabinet , nearly all of whom
will bo present , will meet the presidential
party.
A variety ot subjects were discussed , but
final action wns not taken except in the case
of Cuban money orders , the rate of which ,
it is understood , will be raised from 30 cents
lor $100 to the United States to 60 cento.
Under the old rate a very largo percentage
of the money transactions with the United
States was In postal money orders , but It
has never boon the purpose of the govern
ment to enter Into competition with tbo
banks except In the transmission of small
sums. Hcnco tbo rate will be increased as
stated , i
