When P Fontaine named his concession

ho unwittingly hit upon n most significant
title , for It proved the financial rock on
which he stranded. Fontaine IH said to
have taken his departure from the city sur
reptitiously In the night time not long ngo ,
leaving behind him many unpaid accounts.
Employes at the concession are shy their
salarlea and there are numerous people who
would like to have Fontnlno settle email
bills they hold against him. But besides
having neglected to pay his debts the at
traction promoter Is said to have committed
the more serious offense of spiriting away
a valuable painting belonging to J. K.
O'Nell , the artist , and the police are camp
ing ou his trail.
The painting In question U one named
"Trilby , " and under the terms of a contract
with Its ouuer Fontaine was to have the
pilvllego of exhibiting It at the Iowa State
fair and at the Dakota fair on a percentage
baals. Monday , August 28 , the painting was
shipped to DCS Motucfl and placed on exhi
bition. Mi O'Nell's little eon , Jamie , went
with the painting to t > co thut the proOtu
were Jalrly divided. The lad returned nt
the end of the week with Fontaine , who left
him at the depot , saving ho would go to
see his father a few hours later.
That was the last seen of Fontaine , ac
cording to Mr. 0'N'ell'n statement , and no
trace of him has been found tlnce. Fontaine
told the boy he lost money nt DCS Molnc-a
and had Khlppod the painting to Sioux Falls
to display at the fair there. Mr. O'Nell
.sajH no trace of the picture has been found
at the express offlces. It was advertised as
belonging to John Wanamaker of Philadel
phia and valued at $85,000. It was a study
