FREIGHT MEN NOT WORRIED Cora Drop Not Perceptibly Affected by In- tenio Heat of Last Week. 1 CROPS SECURE BErORE HOT WAVE CAME OOtctnl * JfcTrrlhelcnn Hellcreil When TelPBrnphlo Ileportii nvp A - uroncn thnt tlie Hot Spell llnd llcen Jlrokcn. Railroad men. and eEpeclally those con nected with the freight departments of the several ro Ja having headquarters In Omaha , breathed a deep sigh of relief when the tele graphic reports began to come In ycetor- dar bearing the IntolllKenco that the fear fully hot spell over the elate bad bsen broken and la some places there were splendid pros- pecta of rain. The prediction Is ntlll nmde that the corn crop this fall will bo a record-breaker the larecat In the history of the state , and pre parations continue without abatement on the part of the railroads to provide facilities for transportation when the corn begins to move. In regard to the condition of the corn and th effect which the hot weather has had upon It , the Union Pacific fro.ght depart ment made thlo statement this morning : "Wo have kept careful tab on the corn situation this fall , since having received some weeks ago doflnlto knowledge that tola year's orop would In all likelihood be the largest ever known In Nebraska. It la true that the exceptionally hot weather of this week had a tendency to worry us , although wo knew that In the sections where the crop would bo , the largest the corn was ouffl- clontly under way to bo beyond the reach of any danger. In the Bandy soils of the state , where the corn did not develop BO fast us In richer soil , the crop haa been Into and will be affected by the hot weather. However , we have received exhaustive re ports from all over the state and from them are assured that the damage will be but Blight and not create any noticeable difference - once In the grand total of the corn produc tion. The crop this year Is BO largo that It can stand a Rhortage which ordinarily would Beem an Immense one , and yet carry away the banner. " In the freight departments of all the other roads practically the same Information was gained , and the general Impression prevails that Nebraska's corn crop has now reached the point where It Is absolutely out of danger. The differential war between the Dur- Jlngton and Memphis roads continues , with no Immediate prospect of a atlsfactory set tlement. Promptly upon receipt of official ndvlce Wednesday that the Kansas City , Forl Scott & Momphla had announced a second end reduction of 3 centu In the rate from Knnflau City to southeastern points the Burlington took action toward preserving the 3 cenU differential which It propones to maintain by announcing a third reduction of 3 oonta , to become operative Immediately. The lowering1 of rates Is coming with such alarming rapidity that no attempt Is being made to Issue tariffs , as the tariff sheets would not bo ready to leave the nrlntnrn' hands before the rates quoted are super- oodod by continued reductions. The Mis souri Pacific and Qulncy Unco are still In the ring with the Uurllngton and have an nounced similar reductions In their rates. Information has been received by the local freight department that quarantine laws } iav iroue into offrct at a number of the emaller Htntlons In southern territory on perishable freight This has ten necessi tated by reason of the threatened prevalence of yellow fever. CHARM LEADS TO DETECTION Colored OTnn'a FotidJicim for Wenrlnn Jewelry CnnncM Hid ArreHt for Iluralnrr of a Uvrelllnn. Joseph Williams' fondness for wearing Jewelry led to his detection In the burglary of a dwelling. Williams Is a colored man , a professional sneak thief , and It was his Inability to resist the temptation to adorn his person with a stolen charm that got him into trouble. Some tlmo early Monday morning the dwelling of Tom Clark , 1124 Capitol avenue , was entered by a burglar , who pried open the side door with a ohlsol and ransacked the promises while the inmates were asleep. The Intruder got away with a few articles of value a new pair of shoes , a new suit of clothing and some Jewelry. Among the articles of Jewelry was a Knights of Pythias watch charm. None of the property was sold at the pawn chops and the detectives could find no trace of It until Wednesday , when Detectives Kuvsor and Sullivan met Williams on the street with a Knights of Pythias charm on his watch chain. Williams at first denied hav ing committed the burglary , but finally con fessed and attributed to the charm his 111 luck in being caught. Ho said he had been warned by a friend that the charm "would give him away to the cops , " but ho didn't think any of the "flybobs" had eyes sha-o enough to tell one pin from another. All the property Williams stole was recovered. AimoniicementN. The Mil that Is bolnpc presented at the Crelghton-Orphcum this week has some very pleasing features , not the least at tractive of which are the La Page sisters In their character Impersonations. Gee Wo IB very much sought after by the attaches ot the sheriff's omco and Judge Baxter's court. These same ofllclals would also Hko to know the nnuio of the Chinaman now out on ball whom they supi > osed was C. Goo Wo. U was when the Chinaman thought to be C. Gee Wo was brought Into court for preliminary examination on the charge of selling medicine without a license that U was discovered that the almond-eied indi vidual who stood facing JUdge Baxter wan not the ono whom the complaint charged with breaking ono of the medical laws of the state And thereby bangs a funny tale going to prove that the native of the llow- ery kingdom Is not such an unsophisticated chap as ho looks , but Is shrewd and cunning enough at times to outwit the minions of the law of this country. Some tlmo ago the authorities had reason for believing that C. Goo Wo , a Chinese physician , having an ofllco in tbo Osthoft block , Sixteenth and California streets , was practicing medlclno without a license. Evi dence was secured and a warrant was sworn out and placed In the bauds ot a deputy sheriff. When the deputy sheriff visited the estabriBbcncnt of C. Gee Wo ho found so many Chinese thcro who looked so much alike that he could not tell ono from the other and he was unable to serve his war rant , especially as the Chinese said the man wanted was not In the city. The next day Attorney W. F. Wapplsh ap peared In court with a Chinaman who gnve his name as C. Gee Wo nud ho waa released on bail. Mcantlmo additional evidence was procured agalust the defendant and when ho appeared In the oulce of the clerk of the court preparatory to being examined another warrant was served upon him. The proceed ings did not aoein to have any disquieting effoot upon the Chinaman , who took matters quietly and abided his time until he should appear in the court room where sat the witnesses who wore to appear against him. It was when ho walked Into the court room and faced his accusers that It was learned that he was not C. Gee Wo , but an other Chinaman who closely resembled the alleged doctor. The Judge dismissed the first case against him , but placed him under $300 bonds to answer to the charges Implied In the complaint which had Just been served upon him. Subsequent events go to show that the real C. Gee Wo , upon learning that a warrant was to bo sworn out against him , quietly packed his valise and hied himself to Chi cago. Who the Chinaman Is who allowed himself to be palmed off as C. Gee Wo Is ono of the mysteries In the case not yet solved. Late Wednesday evening It was learned that the real C. Gee Wo had surreptitiously returned to Omaha and had been seen around his old haunts. A warrant for his arrest was immediately sworn out , but as yet the wily Chinaman has not fallen into the hands of the offlcer. C. Gee Wo Is looked upon by those who know him as being a China man above the average In Intelligence. Ho has a white woman for a wife. Mimic for NervoumicH * .
