THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : FKIDAY , ADGMJST 25 , 1899. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Wheat la Irregular and Changes from Strong to Wtak Soreral Times. GREAT DEAL OF PROFESSIONAL SELLING Corn lAilrnncc * for September on ShlpiiInK DcnmndH Oatw Aim * Ad vance * HllRhtlr and Provision * Clone n Shade IllKhcr. CHICAGO , Aug. 2l.-Whe < it was Irregular today , changing quickly several times from strong to weak. It was In the latter condi tion at the close , with a decline of % { ? ! allowing. It was moatly a professional market , news being of minor Importance. Corn advanced > 4c for September on the shipping demand , but closed a shade lower for December. Oats advanced Uc. Pro visions closed a shade higher. Flaxsecd nhowed another remarkable advance , clos ing about 4c higher for cnsh. The opening In wheat showed no changes from yesterday's closing prices In cither September or December and with little inclination among traders to attempt to force the market In either dlicctlon. The preponderance of sentiment favored tlio buying side at first on account of an error In the Price Current crop estimate , which anade the total 475,000,000 tou. on the advance of Viil at Liverpool and the continued small receipts. A mild covering movement , mostly liy local shorts , caused a slight ad vance In September and a more material pain In December , but before the first hour's trailing had ended the market turned suddenly weak and dropped with' a rapidity that was painfully surprising to longs. September opened nt 72 ® 72Vlc and ad vanced to 72c. . December opened at 74VI © 74c and advanced to 74ft74ic. At these prices a selling movement started that was jnuch too heavy for the demand. Desire to take profits was apparently the principal motive for most of the liquida tion , but a great deal of professional sell ing was done when It became apparent that the. market was easily Influenced and ithls feature of the market was taken ad vantage of by professional scalpers tfevoral times during the day to hammer do\Vn the price. The result was a decidedly nervous onnrkct for most of the- session , though trading at no time , was really heavy. Priv ate advices In regard to the northwest crop conditions were favorable. September de clined to 71c and December to 73 iQ73c. The market was rallied 'by ' the reports of a peed cash business , but prices were quickly Jiammercd down again. Northwest receipts were 281 cars against 217 cars last week and 604 cars a year ago. Chicago receipts wore 73 cars , seven of contract grade. Total primary receipts were 040.000 bu. . ngalnst 857,000 'bu. last year. Atlantic port clearances amounted to 334,000 bu. Cor rected llgures on the Price Current esti mate made the total wheat crop 60,000,000 more than first announced. This was the cause of a weak spot when the figures were given out. TJio market was on the down grade at the close , September finish ing at 71ic and December at 73c. Corn was quiet and Irregular. September "was strong on the excellent shipping busi ness , which caused a good deal of coverIng - Ing by shorts. Shippers were also good Jbuyors. The more distant futures were firm early , but weakened later with wheat. /September / , however , was steady. Receipts were 350 cars. Septembr rangd from 314 < ii > 31c , to 31Jc , and closed % c higher ftt 31 % . December closed a shade lower at The market for oats was a narrow , steady one , < wlth prices keeping within a range of txbout % c. The demand was not especially urgent , light offerings having more to do with the slight advance. The cash business continued largo , about 300,000 bu. worked itoday , and this and sympathy with corn were the factors. Receipts were 462 cars. September ranged from 20c to 20 c , and closed ' /ic higher at 20'Jc. December closed He higher at 193i@19c. Lilttlo was done. In provisions and the market was practically featureless Prices advanced somewhat shortly after the I pen- Ing with grain. Softness developed later , but In tno afternoon tne market firmed up again and closed steady. Trading was mostly local. The cash demand for meats was only moderate. At the close Septem ber pork was a shade higher at $ S.32V4 : September lard 2V4c higher at J5.22V4 , and September ribs 2'/4c higher at $5.15. Estimated receipts for Friday : Wheat , T5 cars ; corn , COO cars ; oats , 675 cars ; hogs , 18,000 head. Leading futures ranged as follows : Articles Upon. Illffhlaw. . Clone. MOVI-MI'3.\T.S OF STOCKS AND BONDS. Clieerful TOUR cif I' orel ii Slnrkpt * HolilN l/n / Neiv York UxcliniiK > ' . NDW YORK , Aug. 24. The demand for securities mostly expended itself in the early trading today and the weight of realizing sales became moro burdensome nnd at last made the general tendency downward , although -the marking up of a few stocks at the close to top prices made U Irregular. Northern Pacific and the Union Paclfio stocks rose to top prices In the final dealings. There were quite a number of rather obscure stocks which held good gains throughout , but the earlier rise In many cases was almost wiped out. The market started off well under the In- llutmce of the cheerful tone of foreign markets. An early drive against Tennessee Coal , which carried it down 4 points , caused a momentary halt , especially In the special ties. Yesterday's wrong upward movement in Tobacco was resumed , carrying that stock to 131V4 and causing sympathetic galna of between 1 nnd 3 points In other leading specialties * . There was a largo de mand for Union Paclllc , Northern Pacific urn ! Baltimore & Ohio , which lifted those stocks about a point each. There was good buying of St. Paul , which advanced that stock an extreme ? ic , but the other prom inent grangers did not respond. When U became known after noon that the directors of the Continental Tobacco company had failed to declare n dividend , as many speculators had hoped they would , there was a drop In Tobacco stocks , which re-ached 2H in American Tobacco , Sugar , Brooklyn Transit and Manhattan responded in sympathy nnd a number of railroads lost n point. The market drifted rather uncer tainly for the rest of the day , except for porno strength In individual storks. The re- nctlon of the dividend rate In Consolidated Gas , although U had fully been expected , had a bad effect on the market. The stock Itself vibrated feverishly over 3 points nnd closed nt n fractional los. There was quite a notable display of strength by ft group of minor granger roads. Including : Chicago & Eastern Illinois , St. Paul & Duluth , Duluth , South Shore & Atlantic preferred , Minneapolis & St. Louis , the Wisconsin Central stocks , Iowa Central preferred and DCS Molnes & Fort Dodge. Gains In this group ranged from 1 to 4 % net cent , the latter St. Paul & Duluth. Other Isolated points of strength were : Ontario & AVestern , Chesapeake & Ohio , Cleveland , Cincinnati , Chicago & St. Louis , Cleveland , Lorraine & Wheeling preferred , the Read ing stocks , the Colorado Midland stocks nnd Detroit Gns. Realizing was in evidence all day In some of the Southern nnd South western stocks , which had shown recent strength , nnd this , combined with renewed weakness In ithe specialties , made the clos ing rather heavy except In the cases named. The money mnrkct conditions nbroad nc- countcd for the cheerful sentiment from that quarter , nnd the London buying of stocks here had its , effect In the fractional decline In sterling exchange. So also had the stiffness of the local money market , which ruled flrm at nbout 3 per cent. The bond market was qufte active and a number of speculative Issues showed ad vances. Total sales , par value. $3,220,000. United States old 4s , registered , declined nnd the 6s % In the bid price. The Commorclnl Advertiser's London financial cablegram says : The markets here had a good opening today , reacting later , In view of Saturday's holiday and the movement of further troops to the capital. Consols went down VI. American securities were strong and very active , but suffered a sharp reaction In the afternoon , closing nt the worst. There was n recovery In the stock , however , the feature being North Pacific common. Tlntos were 44 9-16. Ana condas were wanted nt 1115-lfi. The bank bought 103,000 gold In bars. Money was easy on the strong bank return. Two weekly loans were made nt 2V502 % , In'to ' September nt 2Q2i. The bank reduced Its buying price for gold to 76s 9d , but Imme diately restored the rate to 76s 9V4d. SJ.-COTTON-Thero was a decided letup in the trading In cotton ( futures by the general public nnd the volume of business was smaller probably than for any one day since the excitement in cotton first set In. There was no reason for the change , ns the average of crop news was quite as bullish as heretofore nnd there wag nothing special In the English nd- vlcea to justify a change In sentiment. Nevertheless , the market declined rapidly after the momentum of yesterdays rise had expended Itself In an advance of 35 points , confined to the opening. Trading for a time was very active , but liquidation. soon commenced and a few of the larger local bear operators accelerated the down ward movement by pounding the market. The government report Indicated some pos sibility of rains In the northerly section of the cotton belt , with no relief for the central - tral and moro southerly section. The mar ket broke from the opening prices about 12 5M5 points. During the afternoon a nervous feeling obtained and while- the extent of the variations became smaller the course of the market was such as to indicate very unsettled views. The market was finally steady at a net loss of 67 points. Moreover , of the cattle reported In the yards thirty cars were from Kansas City consigned direct to the Cudahy PackIng - Ing company and not offered for sale. There were about ten loads of cornfed steers , four or live loads of Texas steers , thirteen to fifteen loads of western beef , about twenty loads of cows and heifers and the balance feeders. The cornfed cattle here today were noth ing extra In point of quality , the moat of them being medium quality steers and none of them right good. The market on that kind of cattle did not show much change as compared with yesterday and the offer ings for the most part changed hands early In the morning , the demand being fair. Western beef steers were not so active and It was late before they had all been disposed of. Buyers claimed that the mar ket at this point was way out of line with other markets and the tendency was to try hnd bear It down a little , but with .the moderate receipts and the competition from icctier ouyers it was not posaioie to maKe very much difference In It , but In some cases they sold a little lower. Western cattle continue to so1 ! ! at a premium at this point over any other market In the country. Cows and heifers were close to steady , but the market was a little slow and In spots lower. Buyers seemed to want to (111 ( their orders at easier prices If possible , but still tha demand was of such proportions that It was hardly possible to forec prices down to amount to much. Buyers were reporting their purchases as costing fully as much as yesterday. Stackers and feeders were In active de mand and buyers were out early looking for the cattle. The market was strong and active on all kinds and some of the most desirable lots gold 5@10e higher. One bunch of cattle held over brought 15c more than the best bid yesterday. The aheop and yearlings brought the same as yesterday , so that the market would have to be quoted as Just steady , but It may bo added that the demand Is exceedingly good and that packers want a good rmmy more sheep and lambs than are to be had at the present time. One of the largcat packers remarked that forty or fifty cars could be marketed at this point In a bunch before the shortage -would be made up or the Im mediate demand satisfied. As to prices this Is the highest market In the country , the moderate supply for a week back hav ing helped to sustain values.
