It to the original "Mother Hubbard. " The
men doff their garments and don thei oco-

pull It In ; but , largo or small , no matter.
Down dives ho Kanaka head foremost to
seize the prize.
The uomen nnd children wndo In a little
distance to catch the smaller pieces that
get past the men , and soon the piles on ( no
Bhoro grow from nothing to cords.
A hardy native will stay In the. water ,
wading nnd diving , for n couple of hours ,
and then conic out , pretty thoroughly chilled ,
to sun hlmielf on the beach In rendlncaa
for another bout with the waves , nienntlmo
solacing himself with the Inevitable pipe or
cigarette.
Hard work is thla wood gathering by diving ,
what between the buffeting of the waves , th
cold nnd the labor of tugging the loga whore.
But for all that shouts and laughter fill the
air , and one might suppose the occasion wan
a summer picnic.
Whatever hla faults , the Kanaka has not
added to the gltoom and discontent of the
world. Ho endures disappointment nnd mis
fortune with equanimity , and -when the
clouds pass and the sun shine * ho Is ready
to laugh nnd bo glad.

A machine has been built on novel princi
ples for cooling the air of houses and apart
ments. It differs from the refrigerating
machines now In use , which convert me
chanical energy Into heat , abstracted through
the medium of liquefied eases , In that it depends -
ponds on utilizing the great latent heat of
evaporation of water. It Is not Intended for
heavy refrlgeratlve work , but for cooling at
maximum efficiency over the range of 10 to
25 degrees Fahrenheit , required to keep a
room at comfortable temperature on a hot
summer day. To furnish the forced blast
which provides both the air circulation and
the chilling effect , all that Is required la a
little electric motor blower. This evaporates
the water , which Is distributed In a capillary
nlm , so effectively that 10,000 cubic feet of
air per hour can be cooled to about C8 de
grees Fahrenheit. There Is an automatic
adjustment which keeps the temperature at
any desired point and at any desired dcgreo
of humidity. The water can bo taken from
the local nupply and current from the near
est available source. The apparatus re
quires no more attention than a common
fan motor , nnd can readily bo set up In
sick rooms or hospitals , where such nn ap
pliance Is often invaluable , The case with
which the apparatus can bo handled and
operated , In fact , should Insure Its adop
tion generally In all kinds of buildings dur
ing very hot weather. U Is not only far moro
efficient than the ordinary refrigerating ap
paratus , but It practically enables nnyon
who Is very sensltlvo to Indoor heat to pass
through the most trying summer In com
fort. .
A SiniK - I" llrr Tea KeMle.
Mrs. William Scho-wcngerdt , who live * near
Independence , took a tea kettle to the cistern
recently and pumped It full of water , re
lates the Kansas City Journal. Without
looking Into the kettle she closed the ltd ,
carried It to the kitchen and set It on the
stove. Then , as sbo was a little late wltli
her evening meal , aho poked the lire up a
bit and put on some light kindling wood.
In a moment Mrs. Schowengerdt heard
such a Eplashlng of the water In the kettle
that she turned around from her work at a
table across the room and looked at It , 8h
at first thought the cat bad fallen Into
pan of water near the stove. While she
was looking a unako stuck Its head out of
the spout of the kettle. The spout was too
narrow to admit the rest of Its bodr nnd
as the water was fast becoming heated the
snake was frantic with pain and made d -
pcrate efforts to pet out.
With a scream Mrs. Schowengerdt ran to
the etovo and seized the kettle , running out
Into the yard with It. There she poured out
the snake nnd the water through the opened
lid and the nake writhed slowly away.
Whether the reptile had got into the kettle
between the meals or whether she pumped It
In when she went to the cistern Mr * Bohowen-
gordt does not know , but she Inclines to the
latter belief.
