10 THE OMAHA DAILY 33EE ; SATURDAY , AUGUST 19. 1890. 'OMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Bpeonktira Wheat Market Basks in the Sun shim of Active Cash Dsmand. HEAVY NORTHWEST RAINS KEEP PRICES UF Corn Firm for September , lint Ilarclj Steady for Lntcr Manthn Oat * Shotv More Activity Than l/nnal / Provision * CinCAGO , Aug. 18.pcculatlve wheat market again basked In the sunshine of an active cash demand. An advanpc of % c was floored In September and Uo In Decem ber. Corn closed Irregular , iiQHc higher lor September , but barely steady for'de ferred futures. Oats closed a shade higher. iProvlslonn advanced 2V41Sc. Liverpool , always an Influence on local wheat trading , showed an opening decline of Vid , which was unlocked for after yes terday's advance here and had the result ol depressing prices about Uo at the opening , September starting at l lVtOTho sell ing pressure , however , came almost en tirely from small speculators , nnd was ot 'n. local nature. It waa not heavy enough to long depress prlcea and eoon after the opening the market began to rise and for the remainder of the session showed con- nldcrablo firmness. Reports of a big cash business done yesterday , Industriously de nied by the bear crowd , were confirmed to day , and the Influence of the cash demand was augmented by further heavy bids to day. The actual amount of business done could not bo ascertained , as shippers would not give out their transactions until freight irates had been secured , but rumors of largo quantities- worked were so thick that they Jiad a marked effect on speculation. Heavy rains were reported In the north west and apprehension ot wheat sprouting nnd being otherwise damaged Increased the demand. Another nnd more bullish feature of the northwest news was the continued disappointing "threshing reports , which Btrcngthened the belief that re cent crop estimates were too large. Commission houses had numerous bids from the cast , based on foreign de mand , but the actual article was hard to fcet , elevator people refusing to let go. The cash business late In the day was put at 320,000 bu. , but It Is questionable If this nmount was worked. St. I ouls nnd locil ehorta bought hoavlly at times and this ibulled the market , bringing the smaller fry to cover. FrofcHslonal longs with a belief In still higher prices also took considerable September advanced to 72c , well above calls nnd a good deal of realizing was done at nround that price , resulting In a reaction to 71$471c. "Minneapolis " and Duluth receipts were 212 cars , against 116 Jastweek and 327 a year ago. Chicago re ceipts -were El cars , 6 of contract grade. Total primary receipts Tvcre 621,000 bu. , ngalnut 605,000 bu. last year. The fact that primary receipts are now dally under last friar's waa no email factor In the strength. Atlantic port clearances of wheat ana Hour amounted to 783,000 bu. Northwest Flocks will probably decrease l.BOO.OOO bu. , and a decrease In the world's visible was looked for. The demand for September was Inuch greater than for the more deferred ifuturos , and December and May In consequence quence showed but little advance. Septem ber closed firm at 71 % ® > 71c. Corn was firm for September , barely eteady for later months , and dull for all. fit was mostly a scalpers' market. The ntrongth of September was duo to the flmall receipts , the strength of wheat and the good cash and export demand. Re ceipts were 108 cars. September ranged ! from 30SK50-io 'to 31o and closed > Mo Ihlgher at 31c. Oats showed more activity than usual. .Tha market in its essential features was a counterpart of corn , firm , for September , but barely steady for aiay. There was an ( excellent cash demand and thl1 * and the Btrenffth of wheat supported September. There was considerable jrelling at top figures. Receipts were 007 cars. September ranged from 19Jc to 20c , and closed a shade ( higher at WJiSKOa. ( Provisions were strong ivlth a somewhat ( broader market , prices advancing all around. A good consumptive demand was reported by packers and this was the basis of the speculative strength. Lack of offer ings was a feature. At the close September pork was 60 "higher at $8.32 % ; September Hard , 2i4o higher nt a > .22c ; September ribs , CHQCc higher at $8.10 < 5JG.12Vi. NEW YORK , Aug. 18.-Today's stool * market was active ami strong , the dealing : were remarkably well distributed nnd the strength was more generally diffused thar at any time during the week. There was j an evident accession of outside Interest In the market In the shape of orders through commission houses , as was to be expected after the sharp rise of the last few days , Prices were pretty well marked up nt tht start and selling to realize WAS on quite n liberal scale after the opening hour. The offerings were well absorbed , liow- ever , nt small expense to values , the mar ket fcelng sustained meanwhile by the notable upward movement of some usually obscure stocks. After this first reaHelnp had , been digested there was a. breathing spell and prices then mounted to the best ot the day. In the late afternoon , however , the burden of realizing overcame the mar ket and prices yielded all around. A number of the. recent leaders lost practically all ot their earlier gains , notably fhe Baltimore & Ohio stocks , Southern nnd Central Pacific and Southern railway pre ferred , which rose early from 1 to 2 points , The hlgh-prlced specialties and the Blocks of local corporations were subjected to re newed 'bear ' pressure nnd showed notable declines , especially Tobacco and Consoli dated Gas , which declined 2',4 and 3 points , respectively. A fraction was knocked oft prices all through the list and net gains In the general list were brought below a point. A very substantial rise In prices remains , nevertheless , gains being quite generally diffused through the list. The grangers nnd Pacifies , the southwesterns , the coalers nnd a number of soft coal roads all have gains to shoTV approaching a point. Louisville continued to bo taken on a very large scale and was pushed up at one time to 81 > i. Southern railway preferred declined on realizing with the publication of the divi dend announcement and the statement of finances of the year. ( Minneapolis & St. Louis made a brilliant advance of 6H , the second preferred rising 2H- Iowa Central preferred , the Evansvllle & Terre Haute stocks , the new Hocking Valley stocks , Hocking Coal and Illinois Central were some of fhe usually Inactive stocks which gained notably from 1 to 3\4 \ points. The Iron and steel stocks lagged throughout , ex cept Tennessee Coal , which moved upward again to near the high point. Late realiz ing was In part due to n revulsion in the recent confidence over the money market outlook , in spite of the fact that call money worked lower today. The known movement of money for the week Indicated a net loss In cash to the banks of over $700,000. Last week's large gain In cash Is now generally attributed to some special operation and some anxiety Is felt lest the. hidden causes which drained the cash account of the banks on previous weeks may 'have ' ibeen at work again. The ecse er money In New York continues tobe duo to offerings ot outside funds. London bought stocks In this market today and the fact that the London exchange would bo closed tomorrow had some Influence on the late reaction In prices here. The market closed rather heavy with only a few stocks marked up a fraction In the final dealings. The was a very large demand for South ern 'Paclflc ' 4s at or above 84. The South western mortgages as a rule were strong and prices generally are higher. Total sales , par value , $3,765,000. United States old 4s , coupon , declined yt In the. bid price. The Commercial Advertiser's London financial cablegram says : Business con tinued active hero today. The attendance was still on the holiday. Consols eased off after yesterday's spurt. Americans were the leading feature on buying heres mainly continental and semi-professional. New but prices weakened York supported strc-ngly , ened at the close , jobbers leveling their books Advantage was taken of the. activity in Americans to rush Grand Trunks nnd [ Mexican rails. Spanish 4s were weak on fears of the plague. Tlntos were 41 i and Bostons 1 % . The bank did no business In discounts. It bought 44,000 gold In bars and 3,000 In Spanish coin ; 10,000 were taken for Santos. Silver was 27 11-lCd. NEW YORK , Aug. 18. COTTON The cotton market opened with prices higher toy 6 to 7 points on strong early cables and continued -bad - crop accounts. Covering was a feature of the early session , but later cables showed pronounced weakness in the Englisti cotton market and prices declined 10 points under active selling1 pressure from all sources , led. however , by one or two rainfall four-hundredths of an Inch. The market was exceptionally uneven , although the general scope of the fluctuations was not so great as heretofore. Again the mar ket took a generally upward tendency on renewed covering and some buying for Investment account following a telegram from Texas saying that only showers had visited some sections of that state with < 1i0 rainfall four-hundredth of an Inch. The final phases of the market reflected a very nervous sentiment , with Che close at a net gain of 2 to 3 points. Coffee Mnrkct. iNEW YORK , Aug. The few cornfod steers here sold at good , steady to strong prices , the best here going at J5.60. Buyers evidently "wanted them and It did not take them very long to pick up everything to be had. While cornfed cattle were selling so well the feelIng - Ing on grass beef steers was not so good. The fact Is that this market has been too ihlgh on grass cattle as compared with oiner markets and buyers naturally want to get It Into line. Only a few grass beef steers wore on sale , some fairish going at J4.55 to a local packer. Cows and belters were active and fully steady and some that were held over from yesterday brought more money than was offered for them yesterday. Veal calves were In demand , good ones going at Jfi.OO. Bulls and stags sold about the same as yesterday. Good feeders were In demand at Just about steady prices , but the common kinds of cattle of all weights were-very slow sale. Holden of such complained In some In stances that It was hard work to get a bid. The fact Is there have been too many common cattle here this week and they have not been moving off Into the country very rapidly and speculators are not anxious for them. It was also the latter part of the weeK and speculators had a good many cattle on hand with a fair pros pect of having to carry some of them over until next week. Representative sales : BEEF STEER& . The rt ujt was that the market at this point opened active and lOc higher on all kinds. Buyers evidently wanted the hogs and they wen not long in clearing the yards. Heavy packing hog * sold nt $4,40 am heavy and medium weight mixed loads a * 4.42iif4.45. The lighter mixed load ! brought S4.47H04.&S , with some good llchi hoes nt $4.60. Theft ? price * were all jusi about lOc higher than yesterday , It will be noted from the tnble of average prices above that th * advance today pui the market back to the high point of th ( tear , nlso that the hogs today sold 15 < higher than a week ago nnd a shade hghci ! than on Monday of the present \scck. Another fact may be. gleaned from th ( tables at head ot column , and that Is thai the receipts this week have been light as compared with last week , which Is due ap parently to the break In prices the middle of the week. Representative sales : SHEBP There were no sheep reported In the yards today and nothing to make n test of the market. The feeling among buyers was all right and hud there been anything desirable on sale It Is safe to say that It would have sold at about Chicago prices. The receipts of sheep this week have been very light , as will be noted from the table ut head of column. The report has gone out Into the country that fat sheep brought In here could not be reahlpped to another market without being nipped. This Is an error and yasterday In structions arrived from Washington not to require clean sheep Intended for some other market to be dipped. This leaves the ruling the same aa It always was that Is. sheep brought In here and sold to be taken back Into the country nnd put on feed will have to be dipped , but none others.
