10 THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : THURSDAY , AUGUST 17 , 1899. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Unaxptot d linn Foreign MarkeU Advance the Price of Wheat , SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO RAID PRICES FAIL Corn 1 * Devoid of Speculative Fea tured and Keep * Firm Oat * Firm on Bettor Shipping Ucmnnd ProvlRlon * Arc IJull. CHICAGO , Aug. 16. Unexpectedly firm foreign markets todny and Indications of a revival In the catfh. demand advanced prices for wheat MSftc. Corn closed unchanged to Uo higher. Oats advanced > / c and pro visions closed Irregular , 5o lower to 60 } ilghcr. Wheat opened firm nt a small Improve ment over yesterday's prices , September martins U < 8 > Hc higher at 701/4TOo. Liver pool was again the motive. As was the case yesterday , Liverpool Ignored the action hero nnd Instead of following yesterday's decline showed o. loss of but Vid early and soon re covered this. Considerable selling was done late In yesterday's session on the belief that Liverpool would bo lower today and the firmness caused a mild scurrying among nhorts for > cover. When this demand had been satisfied prices sagged. The market was exceedingly dull during the rest of the morning , but stubbornly resisted several ftttcmpts to raid prices , nnd acted a good deal as If It had been oversold. An explana tion of the Ilrmncs9 of foreign markets < ; amo In dispatches from London to the ef fect that although some rain had fallen In India the precipitation was altogether In sufficient to relieve the drouth , and famine was threatened In many districts. Western primary receipts were again , emaller than last year , the total being put at 479,000 bu. , compared with 498,000 bu. a year ago. Minneapolis and Duluth receipts were 184 cars , apalnst 121 last week and 184 n. year ago. Chicago receipts were elffhty- ono cars , eight of contract grade. Atlantic port clearances amounted to 490,000 bu. There were Indications of a revival In the cash business. Several bids for August de livery were made , and though not mucli actual cash business waa reported It stimu lated speculative buying. The export de mand continued light , the seaboard report ing tiut seventeen loads engaged for export. Ocean freights were easier and this was expected to have a favorable Influence on the foreign demand. In the afternoon the market became 'much more active. New York and St. Louis sent liberal buying or ders. and this demand brought shorts Into the market again and resulted In a steady advance In the September price from 70Vi ® 70o to 7171c. This was above call price , and selling against those privileges and a moderate amount of realizing caused a reaction to 70 ? { < H > 70c. The close was firm at that figure. December exhibited more strength than , September , though trading In that future 'was comparatively small. It advanced to TSiic and closed % c higher at 'o. Corn was devoid of speculative features nnd prices kept within a narrow range. Crop conditions continued favorable and some cutting of corn was reported from Kansas , but the strength of wheat pre vented any decline. Country offerings were reported more liberal and the caah demand was only fair. The seaboard reported fifty loads for export. Receipts were 206 cars. September 'ranged from 30c to 30&C and closed unchanged at SOVfcc. Oats -were firm with wheat nnd on the hotter shipping demand , sales of 300,000 bu. being reported there. New York also re ported thirty loads for export. The specu lative demand was dull almost to stagna tion , but prices ruled slightly higher all day. Receipts were 323 cars. September ranged from 19&19c to 19)i@19o and closed Vic lilcher at 1919c. Provisions were dull and Irregular. Dur ing the morning prices declined all around on general liquidation , following a , sharp break In hog prices , pork being especially weak. The shipping demand was good and this and the strength of wheat brought nbout a rally later In the day. The close was flrm for lard nnd ribs , but easy for pork. September pork closed Be lower at J3.20 , September lard 2Hc 'higher at J5.17'/4 and September ribs /4(5Sc ( higher at $3.00 (35.021/ ( . . The violent raid made upon the values of securities by the bear element yesterday furnished material for Its own remedy in the shape of uncov ered contracts on the short side. There was | a fierce contest in tlio early dealings to break prices further , the bears continuing to center \hrtr attack on Brooklyn Transit nnd the local traction stocks. Other mcm- bws of the group proved more vulnerable than Brooklyn Transit , In which powerful support by Inside Interest was forthcoming , while Metropolitan Street Railway and Man hattan yielded easily. The best efforts of. the bears only carried Brooklyn Transit be low yesterday's figure and friends of the stock were apparently ready to take all that wns offered. The continuance of the ng- gresslvo bull movement In American ami Continental Tobacco and strength In United States Leather helped to the discomfiture of the early bear movement. When appear ances began to indicate that the , bear cam paign was abortive there was a movement to cover. The strength embraced a very limited portion of the general list and the high-priced railways continued neglected nnd rather heavy. Railroads In the south ern region were generally strong on the good business conditions nnd Industrial ex pansion in that region , Louisville led on account of the reports of largo current earnings of that road and rose an extreme 1 % . The declaration of a 1 per cent divi dend on Chesapeake K Ohio stock , the first In the history of the present company , helped the movement. Atchlson preferred was strong on the reports of continued large cutting down of operating expenses. The condition of the money market hero showed an easier tendency again and some New York batiks were reported to be bid ding for commercial paper for the first tlmo In several weeks. Sterling exchange rose In sympathy In spite of the continued hardening tendency of money In London. The late raid by the bears today came with , the appearance of realizing sales In the to bacco stocks. They attacked those stocks , wiping out the earlier gains nnd forced Sugar down to 157 % nnd other Industrials a less amount. Meantime Southern Pacific continued Its advance to 37c. This made the close active and very Irregular , the rail road stocks which have advanced yielding only a small fraction. The majority of stocks , however , ore lower. Changes In bonds are small and Irregular. Total sales , par value. $2,159,000. United States new 4s advanced U per cent tand the old 4s , registered , H In the bid price. The Commercial Advertiser's London financial cablegram says : The markets hero were Irregular 'this ' morning , but brightened notably In the afternoon on fa vorable dispatches regarding the Transvaal situation. Americans were dull till New York opened , when they spurted , closing very strong. They were animated In the street. Central and Southern Pacifies being the chief features. The latter have a strong syndicate behind them , which desires to make them a popular stock here. Span ish 4s were 69.62 $ ; tlntos , 44 % ; Anacondas , 119-16 ; Utahs , 9V4. The bank did a large business In short ibllls and bought 118,000 gold In bars. The net influx of specie for the week was 411,000. Wool Market Slows tip. BOSTON , Aug. 16. The American "Wool and Cotton Reporter will say tomorrow : The wool market has slorved up somewhat during the last -week , although the volume of business has reached good figures. The wool merchants have been busily engaged In receiving , grading1 and delivering wool and have had less time 'than usual to think about effecting new transactions. On the other hand , manufacturers have been more Intent on their vacations than , upon enlarging their holdings of the raw material. Traveling salesmen for the wool houses report that In innumerable in stances they have been unable to find mill proprietors , the latter being away at the seashore or mountains. The buying lately has been of a handtomouth character , al though there have been several instances of transactions of considerable magnitude. Prices continue very firm. The sales of the week In Boston amounted to 5,547,000 Ibs. domestic and 13,000 Ibs. foreign , making a total of 5,600,000 Ibs. , against 6,981,000 Tbs. last week. Sales since January 1 , 1899 , amount to 175,853,000 Ibs. , against 74,393,510 Ibs. last year at this time. Cotton CMiirlcet. NBW ORLEANS , Aug. 16. Yesterday they took off quits a liberal slice , but they made It still larger today and it is safe to say that corn-led steers are now 16V20c ( ( lower than last week and on soma kinds 25c lower. The decline has been the heavier on the light and un finished cattle than on the best grades. A few range beef steers sold this morning at prices that were steady , but the unfavorable able- advices from Chicago caused the mar ket to clo e lower. Cows and heifers were In pretty good de mand and the market on that kind of cat tle did not show much change as com pared with yesterday , but the decline on other kinds of killingcatlo would naturally cause an easier feeling on butchers stock , and It \ s probably the light receipts that saved the market. Stockers and feeders did not show very much change as compared with yesterday. Good feeders wore in demand and sold at steady prices , but anything else but the good kinds were weak. The market on thin stock cattle Is 1620c lower than last week and some would say 25c lower. Representa tive sales : BEEF STEERS. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. Provisions were lower yesterday and that , as a matter of course , was sufficient to send hog values down. In addition there Is the still further fact that packers claim that at the. present price of previsions hogs are selling too high , and that they will not figure out. In other words , that hogs must go lower or provisions higher be fore the packers can ngure a profit on killlntr hogs. This naturally renders the large packers still more bearish , especially on the heavy packing hogs. This morning the market at this point opened with liberal receipts In sight , which were helped out by the fifteen or twenty loads carried over from yesterday , Ther * was some demand for cholco light hogs rxnd n few sold early at $4.40 , which were about like those that brought $4.60 to $4.55 yester day , Chicago reported t e market as very * low and a big lOc lower , while packers' mestMgca In some canes quoted Chicago 15c lower on henvy packing hog * . Packer * at this point held off and It was late before they even looked at a hOR. When the market did open It was Blow with buyers Indifferent. By 10 o'clock not over eighty-five loads had chanced hnnds out of a total of 135 on sale. The packers bought good light mixed loads at $4.35 , with peed mixed and medium welfrtu lends run ning from $4.30 to $4.35 , Heavy packing hog-3 were neglected and packers were talk ing $4.25 on that kind. Sellers were slow about parting with their holdings at any thing below $4.30 , so 'that' ' it waa late be fore very much was done with the heavy packing hogs. Representative * alcs : SHEEP All told there were nine cars In the yards this mornlnnr , the most of them ewas nnd yearlings. The market was Just about as bad as any one could ask for. Tha Chicago market has b en far from satis factory this week and that Is gradually forcing the market down at tWs point. On Monday the receipts1 at Chicago were the largest In a year and a half and values have been going down in consequence and today they reported another decline of 10@16c.
