20 TJJE OMAHA PAFLY BEE : STJKUAY , ATJGMJST 13 , 181)9. ) WAR IN FREIGHT CIRCLES Keen Competition in Denver fox Big Eastern Shipments of Wool , RATES ARE SLASHED RIGHT AND LEFT Ilimlnrun Tnrned Over to Snntn Fc , Wlien nnrllnictnii ClinnKc * I'ro- urnm Threatened InvcullKi- tlon Not YctJIntcrlnlUcd. A decided sensation was sprung In Denver this week when charges of rate-cutting were hurled at the freight representatives of cer tain lines in competition for the vast quantity of wool which Is shipped from that territory to the cost. It was'charged that these offenses consisted of violations of the Interstate commerce law and the men who ivoro Indicated , it Is said , were In fear of an Investigation by the Interstate Commerce commission , which has been In session in Denver , and if euch a course had been pur- ucd it would IIAVO resulted in Imprison ment for the freight men , provided any of them had been found cullty of the charges. It Is bellovcd In local freight circles that whatever crlevanccs there were In Denver were patched up satisfactorily , as the Inter- etatc Commerce commission adjourned with out taking any action In the matter. A case which furnished the foundation for these charges and rumors came to light sev eral days ace , In connection with a trainload - load of wool which was shipped from Denver - ver to Boston. The shipment constated of about 00,000 pounds and was consigned to Elaoman & Co. of Boston. The big cargo had been purchased for eomo time and when the Denver freight men heard of It all looked toward the business with a pardonable greediness , and then began a merry war to obtain the shipment. The lines which en tered the competition were the Mallory Uno in connection with the Santa Fc , the 'Frisco line In connection with the Colorado & Southern , the Missouri 1'aclflo and the Bur lington. Kates were slashed right and left until it was announced that the regular rate of $1.54 % a hundred had been scaled to J1.84V4 , at which figure thn Mallory and tianta Fo Fines were to eecure the business. A large part of the wool was loaded Into Santa Fo care , and then came a sudden and unlooked-for change. The billing was or- iderod changed and the big shipment was con- elgned to the east over the Burlington. Of course , the representatives of the Mallory and Santa Fe lines were Indignant and looked with natural disfavor upon the ac tion of the Burlington In getting business. Jufit what pressure was brought to bear on the shippers of this big cargo of wool to secure It by the Burlington le not fully un derstood , but it Is alleged that the rate quoted by the successful road was $1.30 per hundred , which brought the nlco sum of $13- 000 on the 600,000 pounds already shipped .and another consignment of the same magni tude soon to follow. Some of the freight men In Denver pre dict that the fight over this big shipment of wool for Etsoman & Co. has precipitated a rate war that will bo far-reaching , and the only ones -who are viewing it with any degree of satisfaction are the wool shippers , who will naturally profit by the competition and Towering of ratea. rnEPAUATlONS aOH IlKUNION. It would almost seem as though the Omaha Dubllo had been aurfctUd with amusement during the past year , but the coming of a big circus always arouses In terest. no matter what tbo counter attrac tions may bo. There is something about the whlto tents , the massively-carved wagons , the gally-caparlsoncd horses and the Inevitable glamour that pervades the circus that , combined , constitute an Irre sistible attraction. Tbo circus Is a dis tinctly national amusement , nnd the man who doosn't enjoy the antics of the clowns and marvel at everything from the elephant brass band to the educated pig Is out of joint with the times or In need of radical treatment for his liver. It has been two years slnco Omaha saw a first-class big circus , and so the announcement that Ring- ling Brothers' popular big show Is to bo bore .Monday , September 4 , will undoubt edly be balled with pleasure , CertalrOy no greater attraction could bo offered as an in cident in this year's list of popular enter tainments. The fatno nnd popularity of this mammoth combined circus , menagerie and hlppodromo are well established , and lo cally Rlngllng Bros. ' show has a largo cli entele of persistent admirers. Slnco the famous circus war of 1S92 , when the show came to Omaha a stranger , and demonstrated its right to bo considered one of the great nrenlo exhibitions of the country , the progress of the show has been uninterrupted , At each recurring visit to Omaha the show has given evidences of signal growth. Two years ago it required forty-five double- length railroad cars to transport the paraphernalia of the show. Since that time over fifteen cars have been added , and Rlngllng Brothers now use more rolling stock than any other show In the world. The past two years have not only beoif eventful ones so far ns the growth of the ! material part of the show Is concerned , but they have also added greatly to the inter national reputation of this representative American Institution. The progress of the Rtoow' ' through the country this season has been 'in the nature of an ovation. The opening of the season was at TattersaKs1 in Chicago , where for two weeks the show played to record-breaking business. A 'phenomenally successful week In St. Louis followed. Then came a trip to the Puget Sound cities , with a series of successful .performances . In Kansas City , Denver , Salt Lnko City , Portland , Tacoma , Seattle , nnd other western centers. The success of the show on the coast was aptly Illustrated In Spokane , where the mayor of the city and n ijeregatlon of the city council waited upon' ' the management nnd solicited n return en gagement of the show. In Portland , In a leading editorial tbo day after the exhibi tions in that city , the Orcgonlan declared that Rlngllng Brothers was beyond all ques. tlon or comparison the greatest circus that had ever been seen -west of the Rocky mountains. This , however , seems to bo the verdict /everywhere , wether east or west of the Great Divide , and judging from what the press says of this season's offering for something unusual look 'Omaha ' people may usual In the way of arenlo displays. Many novel acts , It Is announced , have been im ported for this year's program , while tbo trained anlmat and spectacular displays are said to surpass anything of the kind ever seen here. Yesterday morning the coroner's Jury that la Investigating the fatal accident that oc curred at the Mercer Chemical company'i flre held another session. The testimony of two men , Carl Giles , dynamo man for the electric light company , and J. U. Sullivan , lieutenant of hook and ladder company of engine house No. 3 , was taken , after which the members of the Jury examined the wires In the alloy In the rear of the Mercer Chem ical company building , and then proceeded to the power house , where they looked over the machinery. Witness Giles testified that ho tested the arc wires at 12 , noon , and every two hours thereafter until 6 o'clock on the day of the fire. This , ho alleged , Is one of his dally duties , for the purpose of ascertaining the condition of the circuits. At none of the hours mentioned were the currents on. With reference to wire No. 5 , or the one known ns the opera house wire , It was dead shortly nftor 4 o'clock , or as soon as the matinee closed at the I3oyd. After that hour there was no current on this wire. Fireman Sullivan told of the hook and Indder company going Into the alley and the raising of the ladder , which came In contact with wires Nos. 5 and 6. At the time of raising the ladder no current was , felt by the men at'the crank of the machine and none of thorn had any knowledge of any of the wires being alive until after the fire , when they were taking the ladder down. Witness was of the opinion that the wires In the alloy wore not crossed. There were no Instructions given relative to making an examination for live wires , as there was a general order about being careful and using great caution. After returning from the power house of the company the Jury took n recess until next Monday morning at 0 o'clock. Hamilton \Varren , M.
