She was living alone nnd , of course , was
very nnxlous to hear from her husband and
would carry the baby to the postofllce when
going thither , hoping she would receive a
letter from him.
One day something had delnjcd the stage.
Wearied nlth her long walk she left her
baby on a little shelf In front of the gen
eral delivery and walked to the first turn
of the road to see If the stage or post
master were coming.
On turning back , what was her surprise
and horror at eeclng the child being berne
off by a mountain lion. She fallowed the
brute as far as she could sec It , then In de
spair returned , found the postmaster , who
got a few neighbors armed with guns and
dog3 , followed the trail for three miles ,
when It was lost In the bed of n creek.
Although for several succeeding days the
country was searched , jot no further sign
woe ever seen of child or Hon.
For many a night afterward the post
master put out frcth beef and stood at the
general delivery window with a Winchester
ride , In hopeJ the beast wouM return , but It

As for Mrs. Johnson , she could never bear
the sight of that postofllce again. Her hus
band returned to San Diego , where ehe
joined him , nnd they left the country.
N'ovr for the strange sequel. I was tell
ing this strange story beside a campflre on
Palomar mountain when Mr. Baldwin asked
me what } car It was I could not give the
exact date , only It was the year of the gold
excitement. He told me that bis brother *
In-law , J. Klnnlson , had been to San Diego
that year and when about ten miles from
Virginia postofQo found n girl baby-in tha
road. There were no housca anywhere near ,
EO he took the girl home with him. He had
never heard of the Virginia postofflce Inci
dent.
The girl he found has grown up nearly to
womanhood and Is named Irene Klnnlson.
As for Mrs. Johnson , no one knows 'where
she is IB Miss Irene Klnnlson Miss Vir
ginia Johnson ?
About three weeks after the taking of th
child Qua Helslg and the Westmoreland
boys of Valley Center were hunting , when
they came across and killed the largest
mountain lion ever seen In southern Cali
fornia. U might have been the same lion
tllat carried off ( he child. Mr. Baldwin said
Mr. Klnnlson found the child ten miles from
any house that was Inhabited , so there W&B
no one to whom Inquiries could bo made con
cerning It. As for the mall carrier , the gold
excitement caused the mail contractor lo flnd
a new driver every few do > and he had
disappeared. As for Virginia poatoftlco , Mrs.
Johnson was soon gone and the story becama
old and forgotten.

One night , when the legislature wa In ics-

Toombs was there. Something had gone
wrong at the capltol and be wan road , As
usual , he took no pains to conceal bis entl-
ments.
When Bain entered the hotel he found
the general talking excitedly with a crowd
around him. Toomba objected to something
eald or done In the legislature and pro
ceeded to "cues out" the whole body. The
eloquent talker was perfectly reckless. Ha
threw off brilliant epigrams , epllbeta and
outbursts of profanity until be almott

If you repeat your fltaternents I'll hit you ! "
This Interested the crowd , The legislator
towered over everybody , ready to itrike tha
general. Toomba , In Hi Is fearlees way , was
about to eay something when several ot hit
friends gently drew 'him ' into the elevator
und took him to his room ,
"I was just about to bit him , " remarked
the leglidator.
Just then a very small , delicate-looking
mau , with a pale face and mild blue eyes ,
walked up to tbo big politician.
"Yes , " said the little man quietly , "I
saw that you were about to hit him. That's
why I came'up. "
"I don't understand , " replied the other.
"I got close to you , " continued the llttla
man , "because I wus going to kill you If you
struck General Toomba. I am fixed for It ,
and It you bad touched blm I would hav
shot you through the heart ) "
Baying this be tapped his hip pocket.
The tall legislator in Borne contusion laid
something apologetic and explanatory and
remembered an engagement elsewhere.
"That little man , " eald Bain In conclusion ,
"was Colonel John 8. Hart , ono of the
bravest cavalry officers in the confederate
service. > He waa afraid ot nothing , and he
meant juit what ho Bald , lie would have
killed that man It he had struck Toombs. "
