PROVISIONS CLOSE ABOUT 5C LOWER Corn Fnlrly Steady Enrly In "lc Day Hnt Lntrr Developed Wcnk- * ncim Out * Are Dull nnd \ Weak. CHICAGO , Aug. lO.-Antlclpatlon of the fcovernment crop report , issued this after noon , completely flattened out trading In wheat today nnd the pit was the dullest in mdntha. Pending1 Ita Issue there "was no titapositlon to 'trado ' cither way. Wh at de clined Uc , coarse grains wcro weak , com klecllnln ? H5H4c and oats UQHc. Provisions closed about Gc lower. The opening In wheat waa tame without tiny material change In price , September ( starting at about GD' c. Domestic receipts ( were small and higher quotations came tfrom Liverpool , hut the government crop ( report wna due this afternoon and pending Its Issuance traders were unwilling to get Into the market on either side. The result iwaa that the entire session was marked by to. dullness that is seldom equaled. The In- Kcnso heat also kept traders out of the pit except when actually necessary. September touched 69V4c shortly nfter the opening , fTIie market fluctuated lazily between that figure and G9c until shortly after noon , rvvhen it gradually sagged more from the dullness than from anything bearish in the tiewH and the close wvs weak at about the Jowcst point of the day. The government report was expected 'to show n decline In the condition of spring wheat of from 6 to 8 points nnd this fact perhaps prevented the market from developing more weakness than It did. ( Minneapolis nnd Dulurh re ceipts -were IBS cars , compared with 229 last rwock and 77 n. year ngo. Total primary re ceipts wore 62.1,000 lu. , against 3SO.OOO bu. Bast year. Atlantic port clearances amounted ( to 038,000 tou. The seaboard reported 39 loads worked for export , but the cosh demand tiero was slow. Crop reports in the north west were conflicting , 'but ' the weather In that section was favorable. Some hall was reported In 'North ' Dakota and some Minnesota seta threshing returns were disappointing , September near the close declined to G8c , about put price. Buying against those fnriviinfrf.q tmllw1 Lhe market , but the close iwns ait < Vhe bottom , 6Sc. Corn -was fairly steady early , but late In the session developed marked weakness. Xdght receipts and a continued good ship- pin ? demand sustained prices. Receipts iwero 328 oars. About 200,000 bu. was worked hero for shipment. Belief In a ( bearish gov ernment report and ifavorablo crop reports , With 'tino ' laito weakness of whealt , broke corn after noon , scalpers selling quite freely. The close was rweak at about bottom tom figures. September ranged from 30c ito 3114o and closed ? 4V4o lower at 30 % @ ECHJic. Oaits was dull and weak. Commission ( house selling -was a feature , apparently for country account. The cash demand was only fair. 60,000 bu. being taken here for chlpmcnts. Receipts were 294 cara. Indica tions favored a larger movement next week nnd this und sympathy with other grain markets were the Influences. September ranged .from 20c to 1914c and closed U@c lower at 19c. Provisions , though rather flrm during the ( morning , went to pieces In the afternoon nnd closed at declines all around. There was an Improved cash demand and this ( helped the market early , but sympathy with ttho grain markets stivrted a general selling movement late In the day and t'ho ' decline rwas jiot recovered. At Wie close September pork was 5c lower at JS.20Jf8.2214 , September lard 2'/4 < ft5c lower at $5.17',4 and September ribs 60 lower at $1.95@ > 4.9714. NEW YORK , Aug. lO.-Today's stock market was n good deal more active than 'for Home time- past and showed undeniable evidence of strengtih , but "the " strength was for the mopt part In spots and the specula tion did not get far outside professional limits. The favorites were the Indus-trials and only a few of the railroads made any conspicuous gains. The most prominent movement of the day was Jn the leather stocks , thp common rising 1 % points and the preferred 1'i jrolnts on very heavy deal- intre in the llrst named. The Iron and steel .stocks nu a group all showed strength In somewhat varying de grees , .but . galna In most of them reached a point nnd In some of them approached 2 points. Tennessee Coal and Iron was the leader of the group and of the market , with a rUe of nearly 3 points on very heavy de- irand. The strength In this group is ac counted for by the extraordinary condition In the Iron trade , where production of the lower grades , although largely Increased , seems quite unable to kep pace with con sumption in the thlghc. grades of the indus try. There was a very large demand for National Lead. American Smelting , Ameri can Tlnplate. Colorado Fuel and various other stocks were more or less affected by these influences. Detroit Gas and Linseed Oil preferred had t/helr / prices of Btrencjtli. The railroad list speculation WAS Inclined to hold aloof pending the publication of the government crop rc.port. . The St. Paul statement for the. flrst week of August prompted some buying of the grangers. Gains of a point or over were shown by Chicago Great Western debentures , the pre ferred Burlington , Kansas CKy , Plttsburg & Gulf , Oregon Navigation , Hocking Valley preferred , wheeling & Lake Erie preferred , Plttsburg , Cincinnati , Chicago & St. Louis , Iowa Central preferred and Pacific Coast. Developments In the money market con- tlmi d to receive attention. Outside money continued to bo offered in the. local market ; call money continued easy and rates for mercantile paper were shaved slightly. Time money , however , continued strong. The failure of the Bank of England to ad vance its rate above 3U per cent seemed to have a good effect on Mia London market , but private discount rates there were utj- changed. London bought stocks here to a moderate extent. Kansas City , FMt burg & Gulf firsts were strong and active and have gained 2V4 per cent net. Total sales of bonds today , par value , Jt,786,000. United States new 4s declined ! i and the 6s H in the bid price. The Commercial Advertiser's London financial cablegram says : The markets here -were generally etagnant today , though the monetary conditions are considered bet ter. Americans opened better. London buy ing on 'the announcement 'that ' the bank rate was unchanged. New York followed suit and the close was mt the best , gains being general. In the afternoon the bank was reported borrowing on stocks. NEW YORK , Aug. 10.-COTTON' Bullish sentiment predominated on the Cotton ex change again today. The severe punish ment administered to the bear interest yes terday was repeated , though in a milder form. A concerted effort was made at the start to force longs to unload , the cables having been a distinct disappointment and numerous foreign selling orders having ap peared , but after a drop of 2&4 points on the early months the market during the rest of the call showed marked ability to rise. Shorts were quick to realize their po sition and readily became buyers. From that time on the trend of the values was almost steadily upward in buying from all quarters , with shorts and Wall street the most conspicuous purchasers. At midday the advance was accelerated by a bullish interpretation of the August government report , leading to renewed heavy covering and buying. The crop condition was re ported to be 84 per "cent , or 3.8 below July 1 , and 1.8 per cent below the August aver ages for the last.tpn years. , , Thls announce- i ment in itself would not have had so great weight had not . .the trade been BO thor oughly imbued w'lth theIdea that the crop had deteriorated considerably within the Jast ten days. After a , flurry of activity , near the end Of.'tbe1 day the prices did not change materitjliy and the market closed ( barely steadyat a net advance of 3 < S7 - points. " , _ "p ; ' 'T OIV Market. That of itself would have been sufficient to render them less active buyers , but in addition Chicago came lower. The result was that when the market on cornfed steers opened at this . paint itwas very evident that the wire edge was off ; they bought the cattle , but they were not so rampant after them and prices were generally a little lower. A buyer summed up the situation by saying i that the market had simply settled back to where it ought to have been yesterday. I Cows and heifers were not In very large supply , and as the demand was good the offerings changed hands early at good , steady prices. Fat bulls were also steady , j i There was a very good demand for feeder I stock and It was estimated that there were . orders in the yards calling for at least ten 1 cars. Buyers were all looking for them , but as the supply was not very large the most of the orders went unfilled. It is safe to say that prices are all of 15@20c higher than last week , 1,000 to 1,150-pound bulls selling largely at $3.333.65. Stackers and feeders were again in good demand this morning and the market strong. Speculators had a good country trade yesterday and were pretty well sold out last night. This morning they were all out early looking for fresh supplies. The 'result wasthat ; about , ' everything' ' that would answer to the description of desira ble feeders sold readily as indicated above. Representative sales : BEEF STEEKS. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. Pr.
