The opening ot the Spanish-American wnr
'ound the slgnnr corps with Its means nnd
methods of electrical work fully determined
on and iicciiratoly formulated , anys General
freely In Alnslee's Mftgazlne. It had vcrv
few officers aid men , nil cnrefiliry selected
hrough promotion by merit , nnd n r.trlctly
United equipment , but Its officers were
abreast of modern electrical inventions ,
and Its onllsted man skilled tclagraph opcrn-
ors , practical pU-ctrlcliuis and linemen. It
needed only money and authority to develop
his skeleton corps Into a large organization ,
competent to build flying telegraph line * ,
.o Install telephone exchanges , tn lay nnd
operate submarine cables , nnd to construct
and maintain cfcctrlc light systems wher
ever nnd whenever the military exigencies
equlrod. The flying telegraph train had
) ecn brought to n high degree of excellence.
AVIth necessary Instruments nnd batteries
the weight Is jet so light that the entire
plant for 100 miles can bo carried In eight
army wagons , to which suitable signal corps
appliances can be readily attached. To In
sure speedy and satisfactory operations ,
wire , batterj * nnd lance wagons have been
constructed on lines conforming best to exi
gencies of flcfd service as disclosed by paat
jxpcrlenccs. The running gear IB strictly In
terchangeable with that of army wngoui.
The standard flying telegraph train for nn
army corps , which Is the signal corps uolt ,
provides instruments , batteries and material
For the construction of 100 miles of Hue ,
The batter power Is obtained from renglo
cells , one for every mlle of line. The wlr
used Is seven-strand , composed of one cop
per nnd fix steer wires weighing about 100
pounds to the mile ; for extraordinary pur
poses sixteen miles of thin wire are highly
Insulated. Tbo Instruments for sixteen
offices and eight separate lines comprise six
teen sounding relays , sixteen vibrators and
two telephone swltchboarda. The special
vehicles consist of two cable wagons , two
battery wagons , eight lance trucks and eight
wire wagons. A cable wagon carries eight
miles of Instituted wire , and In addition two
miles of light copper-armored cable , for
crossing swamps , rivers or arms of the eca.
Thcso cables are mounted on six reels , by
which they are readily distributed or re
covered ; lu cnao of necessity , the reels ran
bo removed nnd the distribution and r < cov
er y made by hand. Each wire wagon carries
ten miles of iiaked wire , and la provided with
Instruments nnd battery material , so that
It may servo as a telegraph office. The bat
tery wagons nre arranged for use ns a cen
tral telegraph station , having batteries ,
branka nud everything necessary for Inter
communication , and , la addition , arc fitted
up as telephone exchanges , A lance truck
carries 320 lances with detachable hard rub
ber Insulators. The lances ara of tough ,
light wood eighteen feet long , and everr
fifth lance la provided with an extension butt
five feet long , for use at road crossings or
other important points.
Aortal lines of naked wire are usualfy con.
structcd , but In emergencies , such as existed
at Santiago and In the recent operations In
the Philippines , the Insulated wire Is
stretched nlong the road or thrown Into the
underbrush and tbui used for days at a time.
The signal corps has devised and Improved
many Instruments for field telegraphy And
telephony. The greatest Hlngle Improvement
la a device Invented by Colonel Jatnei Allen ,
signal corps , known technlcalfy nt a vibra
tor , typo D. It IB a portable kit , weighing
less thnn ton pounds , carried by ft signal
man , and Is operated either with n telephone
or vibrator. AVhcn Inserted tn ft regular
telegraph circuit It enables operators to send
two messages simultaneously , wither Jn the
same or opposite directions , nnd nlio permits
simultaneous use of tlia telegraph and tele
phone. The latest plan of the signal corps
Is to have the cable and telegraph flqulpngM
fitted with electrical power. By th Intro
duction of electrical1 automobiles the battery
power used Is present In such form that It
can be mod rlther tn connection with tolo-
grnphlc operation ! ) or ou a motor , according
to the nocesBltles ot the occasion.
