NEW YORK , July 26. Eight negroes ,
three women and five children , arrived from
Sierra Leone on Monday and after wander
ing about the streets all day were taken In
charge by a colored missionary , Mrs. Hnttla
Rosa , who found them shelter nnd managed
to get fcod for them. They are .Mrs. Lucy
Greyscn , Mrs. Boone and Mrs. Slmlton , who
with their husbands and children , formed
part of a largo colony of southern negroes
who sailed fiom Savannah , Ga. , in March ,
1890 , for Liberia.
Gathered together by the International
Emigration company of Ulrmlngham , Ala. ,
they had been told that "Liberia was the.
promised land for the colored race. " Hun
dreds sold their homes and Joined the
colony , sailing on the Labrador.
Arriving at Monrovia , the colonists re
ceived the allotments of land Which hacl
been promised them , but learned that It
would be several years before they could
gather the first crop of coffee , which wa
about the only thing that could bo raised.
The agent In charge of the supplies , which
were to have been furnished them for ono
year , sold them In the Interior and left with
the proceeds. Some of the colonists mads
their way Inland and attempted to compels
with the natives at starvation wages In the
fields and as carriers Scores succumbed to
the fevers , among 4hem the husbands ot
Mrs. Boone and Mrs. Slmlton. Some es
caped to Freetown , Sierra Leone , wher
they were eared for by Dr. Williams , tin
American consul. It was by his assistance
and that of two steamship companies that
Mrs. Greyeon , Mrs. Uoone and Mrs. Slmlton
were able to reach the city.

Doyle , engineer of the Garlleld-GTOuse mine ,
was carried off by twenty masked men early
tills morning. The sheriff has been notl-
fled und is making efforts to find the mlM-
Ing engineer.
AVhon the twenty masked men reached
Iho mine they ordered the blacksmiths and
01 her employes of the mine back.
" \Vo don't want you , " said ono of the
leaders. "It's Doyle we're after. We'll
fix him. "
The men employed at the Garfleld-Groune
are unable to conjecture what was the cause
of the trouble. The Garfleld-Grouno Is
worked under lease by V. O , Wcoii nnd all
the miners employed there are union men.
Doyle was roleufed by his abductors after
they had given him a severe beating. He
professes not to know who the men were or
why they punished him ,
