Tim mi vzos FLOOD.
Some IiieliHii < n OocurrliiB lit tlic Time
of the IIlBh Wntcr.
Rain la descending as If the heavens wcro
dissolving , writes a correspondent o the St.
Louis Globe-Democrat. The Brazes , though
It la flowinK o\or the loots 'ol buildings
that were suppcficd to stand upon ground ,
never reached by the greatest llooda , U
still rising , and Its shores are- lined with
thousands of wet , hungry and naked negroes
xx-ho have recently been rescued from treetops -
tops , gin houses and Hoatlng cabins.
The latest nexxs from every section along
the Tlver Is distressing. All of the domestic
animals , thousands of fine mules , the cow *
and alll of the hogs and foxvls In the bottoms
toms have certainly perished. No railroad
trains have passed for a wbolo week , the
wires are nil down and xvo have not seen
n newspaper for six or nine dajs. Food and
clothing have been collected at Caldwell
today , to be forwarded to ttio suffering people
ple on the shores of the Brazes tonight If
It Is possible to got there through the mud
and the nxvful downpour ot rain.
So'mo very iremarkablo Incidents have oc
curred In connection with the flood , A
whole family was rescued from a substantial
frame structure that bad floated at least
flflee > n mllbs. The family was aroused Just
before daylight by the noise of the water *
and the motion of the building. They were ,
of course , terribly frightened , but It vxas
"pitch dark , " 03 the wan eald , and they
could do nothing more than "stick to Uie
Bhlp. " When It grew light enough for them
to see they weru frightened almost out of
their senses to discover that their house
was floating down a wide river. The father of
tbe family nmdo every effort to effect a landIng -
Ing without success. Ho flnolly attracted
the attention of some young men oa tbe
shore , near Old Washington , and the whole
family WBH rescued and their house lodged
against ti body of heavy timber. They had
made a narroxv escape , and when the father.
In a transport of Joy. waa moving around
and thanking the people for their assistance
ho .was very much surprised to meet a
brother whom ho hod not seen for several
years His brother was a wealthy planter ,
w-lio lived In a big , roomy liouie only a
short distance ) away. It Is preaumad that
the unfortunate people were made com-
fortoblo In a short time ,
A cradle was noticed floating rapidly
down the river , and when It vaa overhauled
by a party of rescuers they were surprised
to find that it contained a perfectly con
tented llttlo negro baby. The bcrewrd
mothw came after her child later In the
day , and from her the boys learned that
ttio cradle had floated about elx miles. Ono
houb'o pasficd that \vutt covered with chick
ens , whllo a calf and a young colt anxiously
gazed from one of the windows , A young
girl wan rebelled from a large tree which eb
had been clinging to for several hours , Bha
said that the house occupied by her people
had floated for nome distance In the dark
ness and that It had turned over and the
buppoied that her father and mother and
two children porlubed. A courageous lather
carried his wife and two little girls up Into
a largo elm tioo and tied them securely ,
to the branchrn with a rope , where they re
mained until daylight , He then descended
and Hwam to hlx house and rnadu a raft
and took his llttlo family and some ot bis
household effects safely ashore.
Ono man by the name of Bartaln , who cer
tainly must bo a good nwlmmor , carried
his wlfo and baby on his back and traveled
no lew than five mllcu ot the submerged
district wading In water above his walit
part of the time , and forced to awlm wldo
bajous where the water wau very deep. It
wus easy to see that the woman was nervy
and very proud of her husband , Rescuing
parties arc still bringing people from the
overflowed bottoms. U U now known that
a great number ot people have been
drowned.
