Saturday's statement Is generally recog nized to be , in the words of the manager of the clearing house , "singularly unfor- tunato" In the working of the system of nvrrojfes to make the returns seem worse than the actual condition of the banks. A number of very heavy loans were liquidated eartr In the week and there has since been nome expansion , but the fact of a progressive Increase In the total will make Saturday's showing of loans based on rls > lng averages and therefore likely to understate the Actual total at tha end of Uie week. NEW YORK. July 13.-CO1TON-SpJcu- latlon In cotton futures picked up a llttlo itoday , but It was far from being active. Shorts were naturally timid , well knowing that the short Interest In the crop positions were heavy on the theory ot a large. If not an unchangeable , now crop , nnd that the Texas situation might after all bo na rep resented. The market was , therefore , sensitive to any bullish Influence , nnd when the English cables came , higher and showed increased Interest In spot cotton abroad there was a demand to cover , which car- ricid prices 2JK points higher on the openIng - Ing call. Outside speculation and Invest ment demand wns not particularly brisk , howsvor , and there wan a disposition to liquidate August contracts , which retarded the upward movement on the now crop po sitions. Nevertheless , the market further advanced 2Q3 points after the opening call. There was some general realizing to stop the Improvement after It had reached 4f6 } points on yesterday's closing llgurcs. Dur- < lng the afternon there was a gradual tapering off of Interest , 'which ' left the market quiet and reflected a degree of timidity on the part ot all classes oC trad ers. The market was finally quiet nnd steady at unchanged prices to 3 points net advance. Public accounts , as well as pri vate advices , reaching our market today reassured ths trade as to the general con ditions throughout the cotton belt except ns to Texas. Interest In the situation in Texas turned on the actual damage done , as compared > wlth the possibilities In the way of replanting and recuperation. NEW ORLEANS , July 13. Over twenty loads out of the number reported In were from Kansas City , consigned direct to pack ers. There was also quite a sprlnk.lng of butchers' stock and stock cattle among the arrivals. Besides being less In number , the quality did not show up as well as on some days ; that Is , there were , ess prime cattle. The general market wa * fairly active at good steady prices. Buyers , In fact , were calling It strong. Practically everything in the yards changed hands oefore 10 o'clock. Cows and heifers so'.d at about the same prices as yesterday , but it will be remem bered that attention wai called yesterday to the fact that grass cows and heifers , which now constitute the bulk of the re ceipts , were lower. Some western grass cows which were a cut off from a bunch here a week ago , sold today 20c lower than last week. At the same Umo grass cows are bringing good prices as compared with other kln'ds ot beof. Dry lot cows and heifers were very scarce today. Bulls sold at steady prices. There were eight to ten toads of stockers nnd feeders in the yards , counting all kinds , some of them cows with calves by side. There appeared to be a fair demand , though It Is still early to expect much activity In that department of the market. Specu lators report some little inquiry for good fleshy cattle suitable to go on feed at once , but there are very few of that kind coming to market. Representative sales : BEEF STEERS. No. Av. Pr. In the tlret place It opened with buyers bidding mostly $1.05 for the general run of hogs. Then as Chicago reported a better market they raised their nands and bought a good share of the receipts at $4.07'44.10. ( some choice light selling up to $ U2HWU5 Then In Bplto of the fact that Chicago came Btlll higher , buyers laid down and did not try very hard to buy the hogs at all un less they could get theirt their way , and their way was lower. The result was a slow and draggy market that was decidedly unsatisfactory. The cause for the market being In the condition described appeared to be a feei ng among buyers that tly market has heon advancing at a too rapid pace to hold up i nd that a reaction was about due. They were looking for a slump In the casttrn market and were playing on the safe side. One buyer remarked that the hogs would not cut out what was being paid for them and that his house did not want them under present conditions. There were some eight or ten loads In the pens , but the market was very elow nnd weak nnd the rorcnoon dragged along without very much being accom plished , nuycrs did not act as If their wants were at nil large , nnd the whole situation seemed to be against the sellers. So far ns can be Judged from appearances the unfavorable condition of the mutton market down east Is at the bottom of the poor sheep market. Even the feeder market was slow , nnd buyers did not act at all anxious to pick up any great number. In fact there does not appear to be anything very good to be said of the market just at present.
