NEW YORK , July 12. Accounts reaching
Now York 'from ' Texas were ns badly mixed
today as ever. There was llttlo reliable
daUi nnd the disposition to hold oft for
something llko Intelligent reports was
spread. The cotton market started out with
a steady tone at a dccllnj of 1G2 points ,
gave way lf(2 ( ( points further and showed
some Irregularity with a generally weak
undertone of feeling. Crop reports , olll-
clully and otherwise , outside of Texas had
a bearish average. Later , however , the
market rallied a llttlo on a special dispatch
datd at Novosata , Tex. , published by a
Nmv York news agency , to the effect that
the cotton crop was dead from Waco to
the gulf , a distance , of 400 miles ; that there
was not nn aero that had not been over-
flooded nnd that while farmers talked of
replanting most of them thought It was
already trio late. Creek bottoms were also
reported to have- been ruined by floods nnd
the loss in the state was placed nt not lets
than 760,000 bales , after taking Into consid
eration the benefit by rains. The market
closed steady and 1 point lower to -point
higher. Public and European cables re-
fleeted n bearish foreign sentiment and a
disposition to Interpret the weather bureau
r ° ports as favorable to the Idea of lower
prices , or at least against any advance.
Helling for short account was not a feature ,
ns the spot markets were reported to be
In generally ilrm condition , with parties
lure claiming that the ofllclal figures on
epot cotton 'wero considerably below the
actual selling worth of the staple.

MnrK-pt SlinTroil Continued Strength
nml lluyliiK On l.nrKO Scnlc.
Nnw YORK , July 12. The stock market
shewed continued strength and buying by
professional operators was on n largo scale.
There wns a good demand from outsiders
through commission houses at the opening ,
encouraged by the. rls * in prlws yesterday
find yesterday's professional buyers were
free sellers to realize while this lasted.
The market then cnmo to the customary
halt after such a process before taking u , >
an advance. An eager demand developed
for Missouri ISicillc uid affected l.ear.y nil
the Gould southwestern group In sympathy.
Not only the stocks , but nil .the securities
of this group of railroads were affected.
Missouri Pacific held the leadership of the
market throughout the day nnd made i
late ndvanco to 4San extreme rise of 2
points.
The motive of ithls buying wns the \Vnll
street rumor of plans for merging the va
rious railroad properties In the southwest
In which the Gouids arc Interested. Good
buying set In early for the grangers , Pa-
clllcs and Atchlcon preferred and after
midday Now York Central was suddenly
pushed up an extra 2ii. Largo buying of
Pennsylvania t an advance of 1U seemed
to bo associated with the New York Cen
tral movement , but an attempt WHS made
to connect the latter with union Pacific
and Northwestern by manipulating the
price of these two stocks. All of North-
western's gain was subsequently lost.
The manner In which the buying demand
progressed .through the railroad list , to
gether with the upward tendency In Sucar ,
prompted the professionals to uueinpt ti
movement In the Industrial stocks. Leather
preferred , National Steel. Tlnplate. Federal
Steel and General Electric were bid up be
tween 1 nnd 2 points and Now York Air
brake had a characteristic upward dash of
19 points.
Mexican Central rows quite conspicuously
2V4 per cent under the sentimental Influence
or the opening In New York of subscrip
tions for the new Mexican refunding loan.
Sugar , Manhattan and Brooklyn Transit
dropped sharply from the opening llguroa
nnd many of the gains in the Industrials
were practically wiped out. Prices of the
railroads sagged considerably from Iho top
and the closing of the market -was - de
cidedly heavy , net gains being only partly
retained.
The money market was easier today and
confidence is felt that the supply will be
come still more abundant t u very early
date. Several large loans for the purpose
of nc.w Industrial flotations are now re
leased and the banks are gaining money
from the subtreasitry. The bull traders are
talking of a very favorable bank state
ment on next Saturday , although the 5 per
cent rate for call loans which held for tliu
greater part of today does not Indicate a
plethoric condition as yet. The New York
stock market received some support today
from London In spite of the continued
heaviness thereIn either departments , but

The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says : The markets
here were Inactive today ; they opened dull ,
but Improved later on a spurt of 11-16 In
consols. The recent weakness In them is
attributed to sales by discount , brokers who
were unwilling to pay the stiff loan rates
demanded by the bank. It Is rumored that
the proposal to extend postolllco savings
bank Investments beyond consols has been
abandoned. A moro hopeful view of the
Transvaal situation also prevailed. Money
was harder. There Is talk of an advance
in the bank rate tomorrow , but I think
suc'h ' action improbable. Gold to uio

the bank and 10.000 taken for Rio. The

CATTLE The market on cornfod cattle
was not quite ) so active to open this mornIng -
Ing as It has been on some days and still
there was a fair demand and buyers got
, down to business dn reasonably good season.
I I Where the cattle were the kind that they
i ' wanted the market was steady , but the
holders of offish cattle , or such cattle as
buyers did not seem to take a fancy to ,
were quoting the market a little lower. On
the other hand , there w ro Individual sales
at prices that even looked strong. Later
on In the morning advices were received
from Chicago Indicating that the market
at that point was lower and In consequence
of that the feeling on such cattle as re
mained unsold was a little easier. Taking
the market as a whole It was In pretty
good shape and as a rule satisfactory to
the sellers. As will be noted from the sales
below , there were plenty of good cattle In
the yards.
Good dry lot cow ? and heifers were about
steady , but grass stuff was 510c lower.
Grass cows nnd heifers have been bringing
very high prices * , while they have been
showing more and more grass signs , and
the shrinkage at the pacldng houses has
been getting larger right along. This
morning buyers were on the lookout for
grass stuff and were on the lookout for
it , with the result that prices as a rule
wore lower , as noted above. The bull mar
ket did not show much change , at least
none of material Importance , and the same
was true of calves , though there was a dis
position on the close to bear down on most
everything In the way of butchers' stock.
A few stockers and feeders were among
the cattle received , but the market was
featureless. The prices paid were prac
tically the same as yesterday. Representa
tive sales *

HOGS The market this morning was
lOc higher and at the best time fully lOc
higher. The trade was quite active under
the influence of tile good demand and a
good many hogs changed hands in a short
time. A large upmber of the early sales
were' on the basis of Ji.02'04.05 ' for such
hogs as brought $3.95 yesterday. Borne
Choice light sold at J4.10. A little later on ,
OB it bscame apparent that the receipts
were somewhat larger than had been antici
pated and that there were plenty of hogs
to fill all orders , buyers seemed to come to
the conclusion that they were paying too
much monev , and acordlngly lowered their
hands a little. That 1 , such hogs as they
paid J4.05 for In the morning they wanted to
guy at Ji.02',4 a little later on , and if they
were not right good loads they would offer
in many cases only J4 , Sellers , aH a matter
of course , were all asking the best prices
of the day for their holdings , and as a re
sult the market became rather slow for a
time. Jit finally closed slow and weak and
Z'Affioo ' lower than ths best time.
Today's advance carries the market to
the hlgheot point touched since June. 4. 1S93 ,
when hogs sold on an average a little above
$4 , the KaVne as today. Another fact that
may bo worth noticing is that th're has
been no time during the month of July
when hogs have sold as high as they are
now selling since 1695. Representative sales ;

' There was a fair run of sheep
today and the situation w < w a good
deal like what wns described yesterday.
There seemed to be demand for good mut
ton sheep at prices that wcro Just about
steady , but nt the same -time the trade waa
slow and It wns rather l.vte before much
business had been transacted. Buyers Bcem
to feel that sheep are bringing big prices ,
which they are. and so long as that Is
true they do not show aa much anxiety to
buy as they do under more favorable
circumstances. It is still too early to ex-
| nect much In the way of feeder business ,
but there Is a llttlo business doing In that
line. The siles clvon below will show the
prices paid for the different kinds of stuff
on sale.
